Columbus has had an increasingly busy week:

  • Signed backup keeper Matt Lampson, who originally came through their academy before bouncing around a bunch of teams. Ok.
  • Signed 31 year old Dutch CB Vito Wormgoor, who has spent his career in the Eredivisie and Norwegian Eliteserien. Time will tell if he's a starter or a backup. Jonathan Mensah had a reasonably strong year in 2019 and youngster Aboubacar Keita has shown some promise.
  • Now, they're reported to be signing 27 year old Argentina AM Lucas Zelarayan from Tigres for a club-record >$7m fee. That's your Federico Higuain replacement, I guess.
LAFC signed 20 year old Uruguayan CM Francisco Ginella from Montevideo Wanderers. He's the third Uruguayan on the roster, after having good success with the first two. It seems unlikely he'll have a shot at the starting lineup initially, but that could change if either of Kaye or Atuesta are sold at some point.

Nashville signed 22 year old Colombian CB Miguel Nazarit from Once Caldas. Good signing? Bad signing? Who knows! As their roster currently stands, the competition at CB isn't all that stiff.

Cincinnati signed 29 year old Swedish CB Tom Petterson from Östersund. They also picked up 19 year old Ameican RB Zico Bailey, who left LA Galaxy academy for a couple of short stints in Scandinavia. No matter what they do this winter, FCC are locked into so many bad contracts that it will be really hard for them to not suck again in 2020.

RSL picked up GK Zac MacMath from Vancouver. Their GK situation is unsettled due to Nick Rimando's retirement. They have a hot young GK prospect in David Ochoa, who had a solid year in USL which included a run to the league title with Real Monarchs. MacMath is exactly the sort of guy you sign if you want the starting role to be achievable for Ochoa, but you still want a reasonably fallback option if Ochoa struggles.

Orlando signed 18 year old American CM Jordan Bender to a first team contract. He played a lot for their reserve team in USL League One. He has not gotten much YNT attention and I have no idea if he's good.

Bad schedule for me to come see the Timbers play in New England and catch a Red Sox game because the Timbers are in New England about 2 week before the baseball season starts. AND the Timbers play at home the same weekend the Red Sox are in Seattle.

The Fire hire Georg Heitz as sporting director. He had the same job for FC Basel from 2008-2017, where he built 8 league winners and made it to the Champions League knock out stages twice. He also did an impressive job signing young talent that developed into world class talent (Rakitic, Salah, Shaqiri, Xhaka).

So that's an exciting, potentially franchise-altering hire. The big questions are how quickly he can settle into MLS and what kind of resources Mansueto will give him to invest.

I'm still not so sanguine about next season - days keep ticking by and there's no manager, no coaching staff, and only 17 players on the roster. But if the manager hire looks like a great one, I think Fire fans will roll with a rebuilding season.

Ha. Ask and you shall receive. Looks like the Red Bulls are home while I'm in New York. Is it easy to reach via subway?
Yes, although the PATH trains to Harrison are technically not part of the NYC subway system (they still take metrocards though), and come annoyingly infrequently when it's not rush hour. But it's very accessible from there.

You might want to consider getting a drink after the game, though, as the lines to get into the station can be quite long.

File under “should have seen this coming” - the Fire hire Raphael Wicky. Georg Heitz promoted Wicky three times at Basel, from managing U17 to U21 to the senior team. Wicky only lasted a year with senior team before getting booted and taking the USMNT U17 job.

A quick scan of #cf97 shows that Fire fans are still very upset about the new logo and are largely tepid on this hire.

But I do find the Heitz-Wicky combo interesting for the knowledge bases and a professional networks they bring with them. Heitz was well enmeshed in UEFA circles - clubs, agents, etc - and did well to position Basel as a great stepping stone club for highly talented youth. Wicky comes with extensive youth coaching experience and a thorough knowledge of the current crop of American kids. I think I see the outlines of a plan to invest in youth and an academy with the intention of selling on the most talented to Europe. Just reading tea leaves. We’ll see.

The other big question is - does anyone coach the USMNT youth sides anymore? Does anyone want to?

Everyone's favorite underperforming forward #Swagudelo has signed with Inter Miami.

https://www.intermiamicf.com/post/2019/12/28/inter-miami-cf-signs-forward-juan-agudelo
Miami also signed:
- Drake Callender, a GK out of Cal whose "homegrown rights" they had previously acquired from San Jose, as he was in the Quakes' academy.
- Denso Ulysse, a 21 year old Haitian right back who spent the last few seasons with Seattle's USL team.

Philly signed 25 year old Venezuelan DM Jose Andres Martinez from Zulia F.C. He is ostensibly the replacement for Haris Medunjanin and probably a more traditional #6. Medunjanin was more of a regista who didn't excel at the defensive side of the game.

Orlando picked up 22 year old Argentine CB Rodrigo Schlegel on loan from Racing Club.

The Fire’s Aleksandar Katai is headed to the Galaxy. For a side that’s in full rebuild mode and will presumably try to play as possess-and-pass style under Wicky, this makes good sense for the Fire. Will be interested to see how Katai fares in LA - does he thrive on the bigger stage, wilt under the pressure, or continue to be a mercurial presence?

The Fire’s first team roster is still a barebones 17 players, which includes 3 teenagers and Djordie Mihajlovic (who has been training with Nuremberg & may generate a transfer offer from them this month). It looks like pretty slim pickings out there just to fill out the roster, though the Fire do have three open DP slots. Recent rumors have them looking at Lukas Podolski! (Face palm, deep sigh). Today’s rumor is that the Fire will approach Nemenja Matic for a summer move, which could be quite good. I think Matic still has enough left in the tank for a few very good MLS seasons, which might help bridge the club to the other side of this rebuild.

I am throwing myself into the Fire this season, so to speak. After I moved back to Chicago 10 years ago, I felt no reason to adopt a team that showed zero ambition. And the whole Stadium deal with Bridgeview was so odious and disgusting, it just didn’t feel possible to get excited about the Hauptmann Fire. But Mansueto has brought a whole new vibe to the club - an owner that wants to have success with the club. (I’m meh on the new badge and find it a bit ridiculous how angry some #cf97 folks continue to be). And the Fire did right by Bridgeview to provide a lease-breaking payment that should more than cover the remaining stadium debt.

Here’s to a fresh start and please god not Lukas Podolski.

California. Duh.
LA Galaxy signed Emiliano Insua. He's not even on a TAM contract, so he's being paid less than $500k. On paper he's their new starting left back. Does this guy have anything left in the tank?
My chief memory of him at Liverpool is that the team thought Paul Konchesky was a better option.

The first two rounds of the "Super" draft were today.

https://www.mlssoccer.com/superdraft/2020/tracker
Two more are next week.
They really need to change the name. The "Super" name came about not as overhype, but as the result of the merger of two different types of drafts the league had back in the 90s. Most don't know that at this point, so it comes off as cringeworthy.

The league should also allow all underclassmen to declare for the draft, or just get rid of it entirely. So many of the better American prospects are now under the aegis of the homegrown system (and therefore not part of the draft) or sign overseas. Limiting the draft to seniors and a few Generation Adidas signings is a pretty meager affair. Instead, we've already had a second round full of the best of the 23 year old European players who washed out of Euro academies four years ago and then played college soccer in America.

Daryl Dike looks like an absolute unit, though. And there will probably be several competent MLS defenders that emerge from the early parts of Round 1.

Rounds 3 & 4 are really pointless. Expect a lot of teams to pass.

If he's as physical as his older brother Bright, he'll be a handful. Bright Dike played with the Timbers over the USL/MLS switch. He was so big and strong. Just not the best ball handler.

Benji Michel is a big guy too. I can't imagine trying to defend the two of them at the same time.

Yeah, Michel is listed at 5'10", 190. Daryl Dike is listed at 6'2", 220.

You never really know if these guys have the technical and tactical tools to adjust to MLS, even if (unlike me) you actually watch them in the NCAA. Dike will be more than a handful physically, though.

The super draft is absolutely horrendous in its current iteration. I agree reform or abolishment is needed. I remember when I was psyched the Revs drafted Parkhurst at 9 though. With a few tweaks it could still have legitimate reasons to exist. But in the footballing world it still kinda seems pointless.

What do we make of the Chicharito rumors?
Would be a huge, huge off-the-field move. And he'd score a ton of goals, too.

Two years ago I would have said that in terms of off-the-field impact, Chicharito would be third only to Messi and Ronaldo. He's 31 and has declined a bit so I'm not sure that would hold up, but it's still close, especially if he landed in a city with a big Mexican population.

The Fire should throw all the money at him.

More moves:

After some uncertainty, NYCFC have secured the services of Keaton Parks from Benfica B. Parks was on loan last year and comes via a €1m transfer fee + 50% of any future sale. Parks is an unusual player: he's a huge, tall, blond guy who has more of a finesse passing game.

FC Cincinnati signed 26 year old Japanese forward Yuya Kubo from Gent. Fee is reported to be in the range of $2m.

Atlanta sold Leandro Gonzalez Pirez to Tijuana, but acquired Fernando Meza, a 29 year old Argentine defender, at the same time. They also signed 22 year old English defender Anton Walkes on a permanent deal. Walkes is a bit of a throwback for them, having been on loan from Tottenham in 2017.

Sporting KC signed Amadou Dia, a left back they once drafted. After two years, he was cut and went to Phoenix Rising, where he ultimately was part of their highly successful 2019 season. Now, he's back in MLS with SKC.

NYRB signed a pair of players who were on USL contracts last year: Jared Stroud and Chris Lema. Both are CMs. It's been a very quiet offseason for them so far.

Chicarito would put a lot of asses in Soldier Field seats. And he’d make the team at least somewhat entertaining during the upcoming rebuild.

Rumor today is that the Fire are close to negotiating a fee for Rodolfo Pizzaro. He’s not Chicharito, but brining in an El Tri star will definitely build some buzz.

There’s also Twitter buzz that the Fire have signed Kamil Jozwiak, a 21 year old left winger from Lech Poznan for $3m. He also has a single cap for Poland. Given the how FC Basel-heavy the is, this kind of bargain shopping for younger players around UEFA could be the new strategy.

Gedion Zelalem signs for NYCFC.

He's been around forever, but is still only 22. He played up a cycle at the 2015 U20 WC, yet at this point has minimal chance to make the U23 Olympic roster. For now, he looks like Keaton Parks' backup, though it depends on any other acquisitions this winter.

The Union bought Jamiro Monteiro for $2M from FC Metz which is a big move for them. He was a great two way midfielder for them last year on loan. Most Union fans figured he’d head back to Europe. He started the year on fire but tired a bit as teams adapted to his style. I think not spending the year covering for Medunjanin will help him this year.

Cory Burke also got his work visa. He mysteriously left the team at the start of the season when he couldn’t renew a visa. He spent the purgatory year lighting up the Jamaican league. Apparently, this drew the interest of some Austrian team who is discussing a fee with the Union.

I don't know enough about all the crazy cap and transfer rules of the MLS.

But Atlanta fans on the SB board seem to think Atlanta has just gamed the system by discovering a loophole in a pretty big way. The comments section to this article about the Meza purchase break it down. Thoughts?

That's a cool scheme, although it's simultaneously exhibit #2145 that MLS needs to junk its overly complicated budget and roster rules. Who knows if this gambit will even matter, given the new CBA being negotiated right now.

Today's moves:

- LAFC signed José Cifuentes, a 20 year old Ecuadorian DM who comes from América de Quito. Cifuentes has been a regular with Ecuador's U20s and even started and scored in the QF in which they knocked out the US in last summer's WC. He made his full NT debut this past fall.

It seems like LAFC just keeps reloading. They are signing some fairly high profile young South Americans: LB Diego Palacios last summer (another Ecuadorian U20 who was linked to some big Euro clubs) and CM Francisco Ginella (Uruguay U20 starter) this winter. Brian Rodriguez (19 year old Uruguayan with six caps already) was brought in last summer as a backup winger.

It seems quite possible that Diego Rossi (21 year old Uruguayan winger) will be sold this winter, allowing Rodriguez to move into a starting role. Cifuentes could take over if/when 21 year old Eduard Atuesta (Colombia U23) is sold, etc. Palacios should take over from the aging Jordan Harvey right away.

The Latin American pipeline is impressive. The absolute elite, blue-chip prospects go straight to big Euro clubs but we're seeing more and more of the next tier of player coming from that region.

- Cincinnati sold 25 year old Swiss CM Leo Bertone to FC Thun. FCC's roster was horribly constructed last year — not just in terms of a talent deficit, but also in terms of the salary commitments they made. Bertone isn't the worst offender in terms of value, but it seems they are happy to shed his $500k salary nonetheless.

- Houston signed 25 year old Croatian/Austrian GK Marko Maric. He was on the books at Hoffenheim, but had spent the last two seasons on loan in Norway with Lillestrøm. The Dynamo jettisoned most of their GKs at the end of the season and still need to sign one more, so it remains to be seen if he'll be the starter or backup.

- Orlando signed 30 year old Brazilian CM Júnior Urso. Anecdotally, most signings from Brazil seem to be rotational starters in the top division or starters from the second division. These players tend to be fine, but usually not spectacular. Urso was a regular for Corinthians, though, so maybe he's a cut above. Also, looking at Corinthians' roster taught me that Vágner Love is still playing.

- FC Dallas signed Eddie Munjoma to a homegrown contract. Former academy kid who spent four years at SMU. He's not that young (21) but can play both fullback roles and apparently would have been a pretty high draft pick if eligible. In a few years, FCD could realistically run a team that is >50% academy products. They stand at 11/28 right now, though they'll probably lose Cannon and Pomykal at some point.

Your periodic #cf97 update...

Rumor is that Mansueto personally met with Pizzaro, his reps, and folks from Monterrey last week to make a deal come together. I think that bodes well for the deal actually happening, unless a European club puts in for Pizarro.

Mansueto is very involved early on here. I’ll be interested to follow how this evolves over time. Surely someone as established as Heitz only came on board with clear assurances about his role and authority vis a vis ownership.

Also, conflicting reports about whether the Fire have signed or are close to signing Saint-Eteinne & Slovenia striker Robert Beric. He’s only 28 and has had some quality seasons at S-E and Rapid Vienna, but has only scored once this current season.

The Fire bought out Marcelo today, opening another DP slot and saving some salary through the one-time offseason buyout provision. (I’m still trying to learn the various MLS rules...holy hell).

This leaves the squad at 13 senior players and 4 teenagers in the roster, including new draft pick Jimenez. He’s set to slide in behind Bornstein at LB. So there’s plenty of salary and DP spaces to use here, and I’m hopeful there’s a plan in place? Heitz has been moving quickly, now he has to fill out the roster just as fast.

But fear not, Frank Klopas is back! He’ll be an assistant to Wicky and he brings some very badly needed MLS expertise into the set up.

In the last 5-6 clubs, a lot of clubs have gotten so good at securing green cards for their international players in relatively quick fashion.

D.C. United signed Edison Flores, a 25 year old Peruvian winger. Supposedly they paid a $5m fee to Morelia for him; he's their big winter signing.

French winger Nicolas Benezet moved from Toronto to Colorado. He's a likely starter opposite Jonathan Lewis, pending any other acquisitions.

Montreal bought 23 year old Canadian CB Joel Waterman from Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League for a reported $75k. That's the first CPL-to-MLS sale in the fledgling league's history.

- Colorado signed 25 year old Danish attacking midfielder Younes Namli on a two-year loan from FC Krasnodar. It looks like Namli rotated in and out of the lineup for them this year, after joining from a smaller Eredivisie club. Eh, we'll see.

- LAFC signed Kenneth Vermeer, the 34 year old Dutch GK formerly of Feyenoord and Ajax. He's been in and out of starting lineups at the big Dutch clubs, sometimes behind some of the bigger names in the Eredivisie. He'll start for LAFC and this seals the deal that Tyler Miller will be moving elsewhere.

- Montreal reacquired their one-time academy signing Ballou Tabla from Barcelona. He was on loan with them last year after not progressing past Barça B. He's still only 20.

- Seattle signed Shane O'Neill. I was pretty excited about this guy at one point, but he embarked on a very weird overseas journey centering on a very shady Cypriot club and he's never been the same. Interesting story, but he's only MLS depth now.

- Nashville signed Brian Anunga, a Cameroonian midfielder last with Charleston Battery

- Some academy stuff: RSL signed Milan Iloski, a 20 year old forward who is leaving UCLA early. LA Galaxy bumped up Eric Lopez from a USL to MLS deal. Likely third string GK for now.

Multiple outlets reporting Robert Beric to the Fire is a done deal with a $3.5m fee and enough salary to be in DP-territory. From my brief background research, he seems to be strong in air (listed at 6'1") and adequate at holding up and laying off the ball. Not exactly the kind of player I envision playing the style Wicky had the USMNT U17 side playing, but probably a very useful player when you're thin on talent and need a target man to pump balls toward. We'll see. There's all of 18 players (4 of them really U19) on the roster still.

#cf97 getting worked up about news that Chicharito's deal with the Galaxy hasn't been finalized yet. I may very well regret coming back to the Fire. These supporters are borderline neurotic.

Atlanta signs Edgar Castillo

Revs fans, what are we getting here?
He's more a wing back than a true left back as he has some serious defensive liabilities. He doesn't had the same speed from his USMNT and Liga MX days, but he still has good bursts and can strike a good cross. Tellingly, the Revs were not any worse when they played out-of-position DeJuan Jones at LB instead of him. He's a solid MLS backup at this point.
