Is Archie considered a bad guy, or just the author of all our pain?
As I've mentioned before, one of my colleagues is one of Archie's closest friends. Obviously, he raves about the Mannings overall. My colleague is an incredibly good guy and the 4-5 times I've met Archie he has always been incredibly nice, gracious, and genuine. However, by the fact that I hang out online here with you guys, clearly, I'm a bad judge of character.

I think the Archie dislike stems mostly from whatever role he allegedly played in getting Eli to the Giants and away from San Diego.

I mean, isn't this one of the most underrated dick head moves in recent times? I honestly don't think that the average football fan even remembers this. Imagine I'd Cam Newton or Jamis Winston refused to play for the Panthers or Bucs?

Whatever. He's not an indentured servant. If you have the leverage, use it. It's a business.
Especially with the way the NFL treats its players. Imagine going through that meat grinder for 4 or 5 years on a crap team run by morons, ruining the length and quality of your life all for a fraction of the income you'd get from playing for a better run club.

Fellas fellas...focus! It's like you are dirtying up my thread with jizzy tube socks with the colored stripes up top.

Manning/HGH. Manning/HGH.

I think it's both a dick move, because it's fucking over an entire fan base, and perfectly fine considering the way the NFL chews up and spits out human beings without a care in the world. Well I suppose there was one care at one point: trying to hide the fact that they all have brain damage. But the genie is out of that bottle now.

That's actually one of the reasons I think Archie's a solid guy - he looks out for his kids, even to the point of fucking over the NFL to get them the right opportunity, something that he never had.

IMO, we really need to keep the focus on Peyton, who, for reasons covered in this thread, is one of history's greatest monsters.

I dont know him from a hole in the wall, so I have no dislike. (peyton exposes himself more, so maybe there's enough to form an opinion). But I think a great deal of it is not his fault. Its not like he's doing ads for every company on Earth. He just goes to all his kids' games. Kinda like I do. I dont think he's grabbing the spotlight. In fact, I dont recall seeing many interviews with him., its just that every director gets a shot of him watching the game and Jim Nantz feels the need to tell us how great Archie is everytime they show him. Not like the parents of those other players who dont give a damn.

And there's a part of it that's local. Could be that Archie is to New Orleans is like Orr or Yaz or Tony C is to Boston. Somewhat unfathomable to those not from the area, but Mannings have been on the radar since 1970 or so.

And what reasons would those be? Curious, I don't know much about Peyton's history/never cared all that much

The phrasing was a joking Simpson's reference, but Peyton Manning has always been a dick since his days in Tennessee. Here's a link that outlines what I'm driving at, although it does not do it justice:

http://thebiglead.com/2014/09/18/peyton-manning-1996-tennessee-lawsuit-trainer-bare-butt-mooning/

To me, the issue isn't that Manning acted like an immature brat in college. (If that was a heinous crime I'd be guilty along with many others.) It's how he refused for years to take responsibility for his actions, going so far as to claim in a book published six years after the incident that the woman in question was "vulgar," and insinuating that she largely made up the allegations. This got her fired from her new job and driven out of her profession. He was sued and later settled with the woman and agreed not to deny it in public again. Then, in 2005, he repeated his lie and was sued again. And he settled again.

Conclusion: asshole.

To add on to this particular story, not only did Manning do all of the things listed above he also wrote in his book (quote taken from the Daily Beast)
“Never mind that women in the men’s locker room is one of the most misbegotten concessions to equal rights ever made,” Manning wrote. “When Dad played, there was still at least a tacit acknowledgment that women and men are two different sexes, with all that implies, and a certain amount of decorum had to be maintained. Meaning when it came to training rooms and shower stalls, the opposite sex was not allowed. Common sense tells you why.”

He also attempted to say that the mooning incident wasn't meant for that woman but was him mooning a fellow athlete...except the athlete denied all of that (also from the Daily Beast)
As to the question of to whom Manning wanted to show his ass, Malcolm Saxon, a track and field athlete who was in the room during the incident, wrote a letter to Manning to say that no, he was not the intended moon-ee (as Manning had written in his book), imploring him to “maintain some dignity and admit to what happened… Your celebrity doesn’t mean you can treat folks that way… Do the right thing here.”

Throughout this ordeal and the HGH accusations, Manning doesn't seem interested in accepting responsibility or wrong doing but instead bullying people and throwing out insults to move the narrative away from the truth and what he did. Unfortunately because the media is more interested in carrying his water than actual reporting, he rarely gets called out for this petty behavior

There's also the media portrayal of Peyton which is this "aw,shucks" good old boy who just pulls up his boot straps, never complains, and makes no excuses when in reality that can't be further from the truth.
His press conferences after losses are a master class in repeatedly saying "I'm not going to make excuses but...." while constantly making excuses, subtly throwing teammates under the bus and trying to deny any responsibility for the loss (http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/lopresti/2006-01-15-lopresti-colts_x.htm, a very good example of all of this is in this article)

Conclusion: asshole. The vote is now 2-0 in favor of asshole and one of history's greatest monsters

I love that a guy who dropped his naked ass on an unsuspecting trainer's face wrote "a certain amount of decorum had to be maintained."

In his defense, he only said a certain amount. Not total decorum. Not like he shat on her.

I, for one, am shocked that a world class athlete may actually be a dick in real life and have a huge sense of entitlement. It's a good thing that all of the New England sports stars we all root for are solid, humble, stand up citizens. Just imagine if one of the rare bad guys ended up on the roster of a Boston team.

You're missing the point, Cooper. Name a single Boston athlete who's nationally beloved and lionized like Manning. This isn't a woe is us comment, either, because there aren't many athletes in many cities or sports who are as lauded as Manning - maybe Favre, maybe Jeter.

No, I get the point and was just having some fun. My overall point was that while there are certainly valid criticisms they tend to get way overblown here. But carry on.

Favre kind of became a laughing stock nationally with his "please beg me to not retire" act those last few years. He might have been a good example at one time.

Wow. That is a really damming story. Weird comparison of how the shield has dealt with Brady vs Manning.

Still reading it. But this makes me love Belichick even more for refusing to say anything other than "You're a great competitor" to him during that "last rodeo" bullshit.

1. Sounds more like Lance every day.
2. Kids lie to their parents, parents stick up for their kids when they think they're telling them the truth. Once you lie to your dad, you're stuck with it, which is why he got exposed under oath. At some point though, Archie pushed a position they both knew was a lie.

I can forgive a 19 year old kid doing something stupid once, but this goes way beyond that.

Before she left, though, two staff members of the school, according to the documents, asked Naughright if she would consider blaming the entire incident not on Manning, but on another athlete — a black one. According to Naughright, the staff members (named as Mr. Wyant and Mr. Rollo), went so far as to actually name a specific black athlete she could blame it on. Of course, she refused (see pages 18-19).

In her remaining time at the university, Naughright testified that Manning, in her presence, on two separate occasions, deliberately reenacted the sexual assault on other student athletes to terrorize her. On another occasion he allegedly called her a "bitch" in front of other athletes after snatching a marker used to label drug-test specimens from her hand and throwing it across the room (see page 22).

where I was last at
I had heard about what I thought was an indecent exposure incident for years, but always thought of it as a dumb athlete/kid doing dumb stuff, (like the Favre dick pix) but reading the details, I now know it was a sexual assault. That and the on-going attack on this woman was disturbing. Manning really is a piece of shit.

Wow. Just finished the article. I'm stunned, frankly. Like Shaun King (the author of the piece), I had never heard this before. And it's all there in court records.

How in the world did Peyton never get charged with anything? I guess because she settled, right? (presumably under great pressure)

That article is written by Shaun King, which means 2 things--there's going to be one group that accepts what he says at face value and one that will completely disregard him.
Except that it's not Shaun King making the allegations - the details of his court case are a matter of public record. I mean, I alluded to the case upthread and the details are something I've known about for years.

I actually told the story to someone at a Super Bowl party in response to the question "Why do you have something against Peyton Manning?" Like most people, they just waved it off, because it's apparently too difficult to reconcile Peyton's image with the reality of what a scumbag he is.

And to repeat, the damaging thing here is not the act itself, it's the intentional infliction of damage - many times over - on a woman who simply wanted to be able to do her job.

This is why early on when the HGH story broke, I knew that Peyton would do anything and everything to discredit the story. I expected the media to roll over, but it may very well be that we're at a tipping point and people will start to examing St. Peyton in a more critical light. Here's hoping.

That article is incredibly disturbing. Fuck the Mannings.

I wonder if the National Organization for Women will get involved. That would be a really fun shit--show.
Maybe Gloria Steinem will come in and talk about groupies wanting to be around male athletes.

One thing's for sure, Peyton's cover is being blown as he waltzes out the door. However he'll still be in the driver's seat to be the next Troy Aikman, Tom Jackson or Steve Largent.

Florio picks up the story:

"It’s unclear how much traction a 13-year-old court filing regarding a 20-year-old incident will achieve, but I’ve already been alerted to the item published little more than four hours ago by at least four different people, and the article seems to be catching fire on Twitter. So there’s a chance that in this first weekend without NFL football since Labor Day, NFL fans will notice this one, even if few take the time to read all 74 pages of the document."
