I am not particularly familiar with how you do things in this forum, but starting a thread to discuss what’s going on this weekend seems like the proper protocol…

I am going to West Ham vs. Leicester City tomorrow, and I am an EPL neophyte. Please tell me the things I need to know to best enjoy the match!

I've posted earlier in the week about a potential post-Ralph bounce at Soton. I'm backing that in FPL. Che Adams will score against 'Pool. Thinking it will be a wide open 3-3 draw.

nowhere, really
Very excited about Arsenal getting three points against a sad sack Wolves side to be top of the table through Christmas. Let’s get it done, boys!

You can’t booze in your seats. You can’t enter at any gate like in American sports so you need to enter in the right location as your tickets. Away fans are segregated, usually physically. Other than that it’s like any other sporting match. It helps if you know the songs. Probably you’ve already bought tickets but like many sports it’s best not to sit too low as you can see a lot more in the middle tiers

So cool!! Jealous. Have fun!

I assume for the sake of this post that you’re not going with a local. If you are then just let them guide you. Also assume that you’r le not sitting in the away section with the Leicester fans.

You don’t need to know that much about the rules of the game, if you don’t already. The offside rule can be confusing but in practice just think of the last defender before the GK as a human hockey blue line. The clock counts up to 45:00 not down to 0:00 and never stops, any time wasted by dudes writhing around injured, etc is added on at the end.

For the important stuff: Google the teams history, which is always interesting. Read a few pieces about their recent games. Ask whomevers handy- the concierge if you’re at a hotel- what you should know and if there are any pre game meet up pubs to recommend. Buy a shirt or cap or scarf. Tell the folks you meet that you’re a Yank, this is your first footy game, and you love it. If that doesn’t eitk arrive early and get to know the folks sitting near you. WH have a distinguished history and passionate fans. but are not one of the glamor clubs (I think it’s a great club to adopt). Show enthusiasm snd respect and they’ll take you in (think how you’d react if a few English folks showed up at Fenway and were really into it). Ask them to teach you the songs, they’ll love that.

Since the Saints are LFCs AAA affiliate I’m sure they’re all playing for a promotion. Fully expect Ward Prowse to sign in January.

think LFC can do better than Ward-Prowse

(and yes, I am up at 4:50 looking for late news before locking in FPL lineup - this is so bad for my health)

Doesn't hurt to learn the chorus of this song. Terrible arrangement, terrible song, but Irons fans love it.

Thanks for the primer…and the above is what I generally sense - they’re not Arsenal or Chelsea or Man U in terms of global brand, but they’re well followed by the locals.

What I feel like I need is a sense of which players are worth watching, and what “inside football” is there to make a mid-season match between two less “glamorous” middle-of-the-standings a bit more interesting.

Why are they fawning over that Ederson save when he created the danger in the first place? If he hadn’t flapped at the cross he wouldn’t have been out of position.

Mate, don't think for a second that these two teams are scrubs, mid table, not much going on. There will still be over £500Ms worth of talent on the pitch. Both sides have had top 7 finishes in recent years, which is no mean feet in such a tough league. Leicester nearly made top for recently...flubbed in the last week. They won the FA Cup season before last.

Declan Rice, wears the 41 jersey, central defensive midfield (CDM) for West Ham, sure to start England's first match in the World Cup...keep your eye on him. He's been the subject of much transfer talk over the last two seasons. Price Tag in the region of £100M. Much of West Ham's play flows through him

West Ham are a team with ambitions. They play in the same stadium they used for the Olympics. They left the beloved Boleyn Ground at Upton Park with a view to taking the team to the next level, challenging the top 6 (now top 7 with Newcastle). The London Stadium holds about 60,000...much more than the old Boleyn Ground at 35K. West Ham are struggling at the moment cos they have a relatively small squad and last season they played a lot of European Football, got to the Semis of the Europa League. They always seem to be 2 or 3 signings away from really kicking on.

James Maddison is worth watching for Leicester. He plays the number 10 role. He's a (sometimes mercurial) attacking player, who is returning to form and made the England World Cup Squad. He's got bags of energy and skill, and if he's having a great game, can be a match winner.

If he starts, Algerian international Said Benrahama, Number 22 for West Ham. He plays wide off the striker, very skillful, great touch and imagination. Entertaining player when he's on form.

Tielemans the Leicester number 8 has been attracting a lot of interest from bigger clubs too. Form has dipped a bit, but he's a class player.

In terms of the season overall, you’re seeing two teams who did much better last year (7th for West Ham, 8th for Leicester) than they are currently doing this year, so there’s that tension in both fan bases. They’re in somewhat opposite form right now, West Ham has lost three of their last five, Leicester has won three of their last five.

If the teams below them do well enough, it’s theoretically possible that either team could end up in the relegation zone by the end of the day. That’s the bottom 3 teams in the league, who at the end of the season are booted out of the Premiere League and into the next lower league, in favor of the three best teams from that league. It’s not yet panic time this season if you’re there, but you’d really prefer not to be regardless.

As for specific players to watch, there are a lot of talented midfielders in this match who will be spending their next month at the World Cup. Maddison (England), Tielemans (Belgium) for Leicester, Rice (England), Paqueta (Brazil) for West Ham are all good ones to keep an eye on.

Some other particularly narrative-rich players to note.

Kurt Zouma - West Ham defender, you will likely hear an unusual amount of booing when he touches the ball, especially from the away fans. This is because there was video last year of him being cruel to a cat.

Jamie Vardy - Leicester striker on the bench is past his prime, but is probably the biggest “from the bottom to the top” success story in recent league history. He went from playing amateur soccer part-time to winning a shock EPL title with Leicester and being an English international. His wife was also recently in the news for ratting things out about Wayne Rooney and *his* wife to the tabloid press. This means that if he does come in off the bench, you might find yourself participating in one of my favorite recent football chants of “Jamie Vardy, your wife is a grass!”

Not to mention Leicester actually won the PL not that long ago.

De Bruyne was definitely hit dunno why that’s being called a dive. A bit theatrical but he’s hit by knee. Had about 5 VAR decisions in a row go against us there

Because it didn’t do anything that would cause him to fall to the ground. He felt a brush of contact and kicked his legs out at a weird angle.

I’m not looking forward to watching Ryan hit the ground like a dead Pickford every time the ball comes near him. That should be just as cardable.

He learned the lesson they all do, well except Adams Traore - there’s no benefit to fighting through the contact.

The league is so packed this year. Chelsea at 21 points is in the 7th or last spot to earn a place in a Europe league next season. Southampton on 13 points is in 17th or the last place above the drop zone. That’s nuts. Any of the sides in the middle, including these two, are a run of three wins away from staking a claim to a top spot, or three losses away from a relegation scrap and a sacked manager. My team, Everton, looked like they were on the upswing after trouncing candy’s Crystal Palace two weeks ago, but they got pantsed by Leicester at home last week and fans are nervous- we almost went down last season. If we win today we could finish the weekend 11th going into the WC break, and in decent shape to push on, lose and we could be in the drop zone.

Both WHU and LEI have spent significant time in the relegation spots and both managers were in trouble. Now they’ve both righted the ship but only just. I expect a rockfight (not literally).

Another player to watch, Dewsbury-Hall 22 for the Foxes. Slick passer.

I was introducing my 7 year old to Messi highlight videos last night. It’s easy to forget… Not only was it impossible to take the ball off him, it was nearly impossible to get him off his feet. He used to get absolutely crunched and would stick with it, often creating something as a result. That Messi has evolved to react to contact as well, unfortunately.

I realize we can’t take anybody out that gets a cut on the head (Chiellini’s skin was made of the same stuff as LFC midfield’s hamstrings and he’d have missed 75% of the matches he played in), but there absolutely must be a better decision tree than this. If everybody watching knows his bell was rung, you can’t leave him in. Period.

Smelling-salts out.
JFC. Just coming back to this match.

They need an independent pitch-side neurologist to make these calls. Take it out of the players’ and managers’ hands. Give them a free sub for every player the doc removes.

Reminds me of a story Pique told in some interview. When he and Messi we’re in the academy together, a coach was yelling at the defenders “get the ball of him.” The defenders he’ll back, “we can’t! He’s too good.” So the coaches replies, “then knock him down!” And the defenders tell back, “We can’t even catch him!”

I didn’t think Laporte was out there was immediate blood they seemed to have a lot to do to stop. Wasn’t paying a ton of attention just think it was the blood.

Brentford exposing City on second balls today. Creating a lot of danger just making a lot of high crosses and throws and fighting for knockdowns

This insane season is taking its toll on every side playing in Europe, City included. They've gutted out wins the last two weeks but nobody can keep that up forever.
It would help if Pep would use his bench instead of making 1 sub in a match where his team looked out of ideas in the first half.

There was a version of this match where a few decisions go City’s way and we pull it out but the team was off the pace from the opening kick. As you said the warning signs were there recently but the bottom just fell out today. That was about as bad a game as KdB is capable of playing. Usually when he’s off we rely on Cancelo but he was just as bad. A really lousy way to head into the break

In peak Liverpool, the stewards had to go into the crowd to borrow something sharp enough to cut the zip tie - and when the cops were carrying the guy off, some other guy jumped onto the pitch and assaulted him, because.

that was good for a nice long stoppage and it swung the game in Evertons favor.
