The Red card might take the bite out of Chelsea but terrific drama for the neutrals!

Second half is going to feature Chelsea parking the bus to come away with the draw. Not going to be nearly as fun as the first half.

Lukaku was active but also very bad. He couldn't dribble, couldn't pass and couldn't shoot.

Yes, don’t blame the ref, blame the rulebook. The minute a penalty was awarded it had to be a red card, no choice.

He directed the ball with the arm. Tough call in real time but its the correct one on review.

By the letter of the law, isn't a red card mandatory for a DOGSO, and the penalty kick is the same penalty kick that would be awarded for a handball at the top of the 18?

Agreed that this logic needs to be totally redone, of course

EDIT: slow pony

Should have been a pen and red, Alonso was a blockhead for blocking Mendy from catching or punching though.

Arsenal doing their best Washington Generals imitation.
Off topic:

https://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-xpm-2000-03-19-0003190083-story.html

Story of the night in 1971 when the Generals (playing as the New Jersey Reds; Generals boss Red Klotz sometimes changed the name to make it look like it was a different opponent) and the Globetrotters decided not to clown around and go at it, and the Generals/Reds won by a point.

In the right hands (Spike?) that would be a great movie.

Mane’ and Trent were shit. But credit to Chelsea. That was magnificent defending. Class of the league

Everton against the run of play. Damn.

They’re obviously being rewarded for having an outstanding away kit.
Demarai Gray has been a revelation. Picked up from Bayern Leverkusen for 1.5M. Washed out there after washing out at Leicester. He's been nothing but class for Everton so far. Two goals, both stilettos. Even better is his pace and aggression. He runs right at, past, and through defenders. Playing like he's got something to prove.

Richarlison acting like a complete fool trying to steal that PK from Calvert-Lewin. That was stupid even for him.
Yup.

Richarlison seems like a hard guy to root for. It reminds me of having David Wells on the Sox.
He can be incredible. He insisted on playing both Copa America and the Olympics this summer. Everton were going to block him from the Olympics, but he was adamant. Playing for his country means a lot for him. Rafa relented, he was one of the best players in the tournament and Brazil won the gold. He came back to Everton, thanked the club for supporting him, and said that he didn't want a break, he would rest when he retired. For a club with some veteran players who have sometimes been less-than-passionate about the cause, it was refreshing. He loves the fans, loves throwing his shirt to kids, etc. He can be really good with that stuff.

But he's so petulant sometimes, and he's a diver. Got booked for simulation last week. Tried again today. The penalty standoff with DCL was a bad look.

If RM shells out big money for Mbappe, supposedly PSG are going after Richarlison, to get him together with his buddy Neymar. Everton says he's not for sale at any price. Maybe he's pouty about that.

Anyway, good win for the Toffees at Brighton, 0-2. Brighton had more of the ball but mostly in unthreatening areas. Everton owned the middle of the park, pressed hard, and created lots of chances. Rafa is winning over the skeptics with a simple, direct, aggressive style, lots of emphasis on wingers bringing it up, good organization and lots of hard work. He said "I know what Scousers want to see" and so far they're getting it. 7 points from first three games.

So look at this:

Potter reacted by introducing Joël Veltman at the break to go four at the back; it did not go to plan. Caught napping by Seamus Coleman’s clever inside run, the Everton captain was felled. Richarlison placed the ball on the spot; his teammates pulled him away. The crowd roared with delight; Richarlison fumed. Unperturbed, Calvert-Lewin converted.

“The first penalty in every game is Dominic and the second is Richarlison,” said Benítez. “We won, Dominic has scored and everybody has to be happy. He will understand that. He is working really hard for the team, I am happy with him and hopefully next time we have two penalties.”
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/aug/28/brighton-everton-premier-league-match-report

Is that even a thing? And when are there ever two penalties? And who would want the second?

Poor goalkeeping and Son bounces a free kick in to out Spurs ahead of Watford.

I like “dogged defending but also the propensity for utter howlers” a lot more when it’s your opponent’s game plan than when it’s yours.

I just watched a Watford player walking off at halftime with his arm around Son as they laughed about something that happened. Immediately an official runs up to them and tells him he can't have his arm on his shoulders due to covid separation. Like these guys haven't been expelling the deepest part of their lungs in each others faces for the last hour.

Nice to see Sissoko sky the ball into the grandstand for someone else.

Burnley-Leeds don’t need uniforms. One side all look like burley white action figures with close cropped hair while the other Parisian college students with all varietals of manbuns and ponytails.

this is very funny.

maybe that's why they've been beating each other to hell all game - it's Socs versus Greasers

I like the ManU kits a lot considering them just as kits but Manchester United Football Club should never wear that shade of blue, ever.

Like, how many people did this decision have to go through at the club and at adidas before somebody said "wait a minute we can't do this?"

United are more than capable of taking the points here and are looking dangerous on the counter but Wolves really carried play that half. Wasn’t sure what they’d look like after Nuno left but they look quite dangerous even if the final ball hasn’t been there.

As I just said, Trincao really catches the eye but his inclusion seems to have pushed Adama to LW and he just doesn’t have the touch with his left foot there. He’s always a player who is dangerous but lacking end product but I don’t think he can cross accurately with his left so even though he’s getting outside his man with ease it doesn’t seem likely to amount to much

Got educated by an older-school English football watcher than I that this is basically the 1990 - 1992 Man U away kit color scheme, which makes it make more sense I suppose.

Mike Dean made sure of that. My 8-year-old is none too pleased, I might add!
Ah there was nothing in that. You might say Pogba was always second to the ball and his challenge forced the ball to be turned over but in all honesty it looked like no contact and Neves spent the ne t few minutes walking off his shame at having acted for a foul call ge didn’t get

Nah, replay clearly showed he caught him high on the ankle with his studs.

I'm old enough to remember when Spurs fans were cool on Nuno
I've still seen the take that it's stylistically Jose 2.0 even if it's a human improvement, but I don't buy it. The defensive solidity seems realer than it did for Jose's point-droppers by virtue of the team actually being fit and by engaging higher up the pitch (not compared to the pressing teams, but sure as hell to Jose). The offense has been anemic so far in terms of goals, but seems to be more coherent than Jose's "ruthlessly counter, there is no Plan B" game plan , and that's with not much time training and with none of the non-Dele creative midfielders being available. Given Lo Celso & Ndombele track records, whether any non-Dele creative midfielders will be available for Spurs any time soon does remain an open question though.

and that ‘Arry fella is a step up from Jimenez in every facet of the 9 role, and Jimenez was the key to Wolves attack. Getting back to Kane holding up play, Son running in with added dimension of Dele floating around the center and Moura/Bergwijn actually getting to run up the pitch…there will be enough goals.

Bergwijn was open all day for the long switch to the left as well, very reminiscent of Alderweireld pinging those out for Poch teams. Still think it should be Son on the end of those, he's good enough either side that I can see why he's on the right for this one but he's best on the left and I think you should put your best players in their best spots to succeed.

As for the Chelsea red card, what exactly does the rule book say ? Is intent involved or is it automatic ? I was surprised no one read the rule out loud during the broadcast.

12.3

[Red card if] denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a handball offence (except a goalkeeper within their penalty area).

No wiggle room as soon as it stops it from being a goal scoring opportunity it's a red card. Intentional unintentional does not matter.
