Yeah, that's right fucked. Dav is fine defensively IMO, but Spurs will have a real problem getting the ball to Kulu. Not sure if Conte's a fan of pulling a tactical surprise in big matches, but there's a pretty good case to flip Son and Kulu's flanks in this one. Have the playmaking go down the left, and let Son cut in on his left. I don't expect it, but I'm real worried about Arsenal hemming Spurs in when the ball gets to Dav, or Emerson deep.

IDK why I missed the Romero thing; that is less than optimal. Dav is a great physical player but is a bad marker and can be a negative on set pieces, despite the fact that he is a great leaper and header of the ball.

Arsenal have been in good form lately; I don't think their squad is particularly overwhelming me with talent. I guess Kane and Son are significantly better than anybody on Arsenal, but Arsenal are close when you consider their entire team.

Do they have a midfield? Because if so, advantage Arsenal.

Well, after the Celtics have been pushed to the brink, and the Sox season looks like it's DOA; I'm sure I can count on Tottenham to come through.

Not quite sure about that one...was looking for a handball in the replay and not really looking for a foul.

I'm still somewhat confused about what just happened, but psyched about the Spurs goal part. Son did get hammered I suppose.

I think the color commentator is right in that at the halfway line, that is a foul on Cedric, but you rarely see that kind of call when it happens inside the box.

Arsenal fascinate me. They really are the little girl with the curl. At the start of the season and a couple times since, I couldn't believe how bad they looked, but when they get it going they're fun to watch. From my neutral's standpoint, Arteta has done a great job moving away from the older players with the big names who weren't quite getting it done, to a young nucleus with a lot of upside. Very hard to do and most clubs don't do it well.

But yeah, they're stronger throughout the XI but Kane and Son are the best players on the pitch. Son, especially, I think he's the scariest attacking player in the PL right now. Salah has a couple more goals and other guys might do this or that better, but whenever Son gets on the ball in midfield with only a couple of defenders back, it feels so dangerous.

edit: I had typed this but not posted it until just now, and just turned on the game, so anything in the game so far is not reflected in this post.

I think this is right. OTOH, there's more scrutiny when the push takes away what would otherwise have been a good goalscoring chance. It's not a DOGSO, but I think that context influences the decision. If the push happens in a less dangerous position, I don't think it's called.

Rob Holding agrees!

Surprised they didn't try to get the game postponed again.
You know, I had completely forgotten that this is why the game got rescheduled. Didn't Arsenal (successfully) argue that since they made some transfers, they didn't have enough players (with I think, one COVID case on the team)?

Holding came out of the tunnel with a plan to get under Son's skin. Too bad he sucks and got the red before halftime. Hate to see it.
Son is a shit merchant, but Holding's not remotely in his league. Son's very sensible response was to blow past him at 100mph and Holding can't handle it without fouling. LOL boo hoo.

Refball at its finest.

The penalty was absolutely ridiculous in a match of this magnitude and totally changed the complexion of the game, then you give a questionable first yellow to the same team. Now no choice to send him off when he gets a stupid second one.

Questionable first yellow? Holding could've gotten the red 10 minutes earlier for a kick he didn't even get carded for. He was a high octane dumbass since the opening whistle

Put them to the sword boys!
This smells like it could be an NFL score.

BTW I lived in London as a student in 1989 and one day unwittingly walked into the crowd leaving the old White Hart Lane after this fixture. Scared the shit out of me. Everyone was drunk and looking for trouble, the old hooligan stereotype. It's much more family friendly now, but you still get the collective id released in games like this in a way that we don't much see in American sports, I think. Being there with that Spurs crowd must make the chills run down your neck.

Davies and Holding both picked up very similar yellow's early on. We will see if Davies picks up another one.

He could screw up and do it and I would not hate a proactive substitution for that precise reason, but the combo of having the 3rd CB to give him room to step off if needed and Davies not being an enormous moron makes me less worried there

My point was that I don't think Holding's first yellow was harsh, or at least inconsistent. In both scenarios, a defender surrendered possession to an attacking player in a potentially dangerous position, and tactifully held them back to prevent the attacker from moving forward. Clear yellows in both cases.

That kind of foul goes without a yellow very frequently. Two players grabbing at each other while fighting for a ball at the halfway line, no kind of break on. You see referees let it slide early in the match very commonly.

The bigger picture is that the penalty was one of the worst calls you'll ever see and the referee basically reacted to the criticism not by thinking "OK, lets settle this match down and try to make sure I'm not the story" but by having any itchy trigger finger. Holding acted like a moron for the second yellow and he only has himself to blame but the referee certainly played his part in the match degenerating.
