There's some rumblings out of Pittsburgh that the Penguins and Kyle Dubas are finalizing some sort of contract for him to join the organization. Nothing from the national guys yet, just a few retweets from people like Buccigross.

I’m not sure how I feel about it. A lot of Treliving’s moves make sense on paper, but bringing back Sutter and the on-ice results paint a different picture.

Now, if he’s bound by Shannahan’s promise tokeep the main 4 together and Keefe as HC, then who cares who’s GM, because we’ll all know who the real boss is.

He seems like an unispiring hire to me. His teams have kind of always been middle of the road, basically either in the playoffs as a lower seed or just missing. Two division titles in 8 seasons with the Flames, 4 playoff appearances and 4 playoff DNQ's. Never advanced past the 2nd round. He's got a reputation as being aggressive and being "in" on everything. He's made some big swings in the past, at least in the trade market. Generally conservative in free agency, though I wonder how much the market plays a role in it.

I think it's interesting Shanny hired Treliving after reports surfaced about Shanny informing the core 4 they are safe. It doesn't necessarily square with Treliving's MO. He's inheriting Matthews and Nylander, both UFA's after next season. It's not all that different from entering last year in Calgary with Gaudreau (UFA) and Tkahcuk (RFA) without contracts. We know how that all played out. Now Toronto is more desireable to live in than Calgary (especially for 2 American's who may have been spooked by the pandemic) so perhaps Matthews and Nylander are more open to staying than Gaudreau and Tkachuk were in Calgary. I also find it interesting that Dubas, in the press conference that essentially got him fired from Toronto, referenced the Tkachuk/Huberdeau deal as an example of teams being able to make a huge hockey trade to improve. Now he is being replaced by 1 of the 2 parties involved in that transaction.

The funny thing about that is, if there is a part of Canada that would've been quicker to return to normal post-pandemic, it was southern Alberta, not the GTA.

Otherwise, I'm with you w/r/t Treliving. I'm not convinced he makes the Leafs better, especially if he's bound by Shannahan's promises. The Matthews negotiations might be our first window into how the team goes forward.

Dubas is President of Hockey Ops in Pittsburgh. Handling the interim GM duties through this offseason/

I think he's an excellent hire for Pittsburgh and Toronto made a huge mistake. The reporting of the situation in Toronto leaves the impression that Dubas was looking for a little more power in Toronto. Not necessarly trying to to replace Shannahan as President but he wanted more decision making authority. Apparently transactions got bogged down by the corporate red tape Dubas and hockey ops had to go through to get approvals. Dubas would have to take it to Shannhan, who then approves and takes it to the board, and then on back down.
