From the pressers tonight seems like Maye was their choice for a while and they expect him to be a project. They like his maturity and leadership.

Looking forward to his first start after the Bye around week 10. Don’t rush it. Play him when he’s ready.
I liked Mac but always understood that he had a limited ceiling, which I thought he’d reach (I was wrong about that). Maye may never pan out but his ceiling is much, much higher. He has all the physical tools but his weaknesses are all things that can (not necessarily will) be fixed with coaching and experience.
Remember folks… he’s just 21. With three years of NFL experience he will reach the age that Daniels is now.

I loved the Mac Jones pick because every college game I watched him in he was awesome. Maye was complete shit in the few games of his I watched this year.

Seriously, I'm thrilled. The opposite of Mac, he's "toolsy" and enormously talented but needs some seasoning. At least here he has a ceiling we can dream on, and a career long comparison to the QBs who are good enough to win their team a Super Bowl.

Watched Bill's breakdown on the MacAfee broadcast. Seems to capture the same assessment as above. Drafted for ceiling, which is fine; sometimes you gotta take the big swing.
Thrilled with the pick; there was a split second I thought that they might actually take McCarthy. I don't follow college football but if the biggest knock on Maye is that he needs some seasoning and coaching or whatever, that's fine. The Pats, as constructed, were not SB contenders or anything this year. I'm perfectly happy to redshirt him, develop some of the younger guys (hopefully an OT and WR they draft this year) and get them ready to go for next year.

I saw him play vs my Alma mater uva (who is awful)…at home…and he was terrible
They changed OC’s from year 1 to year 2 and a lot of offensive talent left after year one. He faced some adversity last year but you can’t deny the physical ability and tools.
He wasn’t bad when I saw him. He just didn’t strike me as a high draft pick. But a gazillion NFL guys have watched him and think he’s worth that kind of pick.
All I know is that no one knows anything. So I was on team “don’t get cute”. Pick the consensus guy and see how it goes.
I’m admittedly bitter bc I watched every game jj played and love the player…and believe his leadership and character is off the charts. I think we fucked up but I’ve been wrong plenty
Love the swing for the fences pick. No need to rush him onto the field, let him learn from Jacoby. And please keep adding offensive talent to help him out.

I think it's important that we all have reasonable expectations for this kid. Which in my mostly-adult lifetime means he has a 1/3 chance of being a total bust that we all want to murder after three years, a 1/3 chance of taking us to a super bowl and making three pro bowls, and a 1/3 chance of winning six super bowls and becoming the consensus GOAT. So, you know, weighted average of those is fine.

I hear ya. It took me some time to be comfortable with Maye. I still see him as high risk high reward but I am comfortable taking that swing. His Clemson and NC State games this year had some rough moments.
Now, let's build around him.

We've been talking extensively about Drake Maye for like a month, with several people giving detailed breakdowns of what he does well and he doesn't, I find it strange that no one who disliked him would show up to those threads to present their case, but now that he's been drafted there's been a ton of "oh, I watched him and I thought he stunk" sentiment.
