The better chance CM has the more ppl are going to buy it. Mayweather doesn't care though, and he probably shouldn't.
Nah. Anyone buying this fight either knows it's a farce, or doesn't care. Most people buying this don't know the difference between 6 or 8 oz gloves, allowing Connor a few extra pounds before weigh in, etc. It doesn't matter. People will buy this for the spectacle and hope McGregor lands a lucky shot.

Bill Burr said that this fight is like a fight between two swiss army knives. Except McGregor, despite being proficient at all of the tools, is told he can only use one knife. And that knife happens to be the one Mayweather has been sharpening for 40 years.

Yep, of course people know it is a total shitshow, but it is a fun shitshow. And, really, this is worth it just for the build up and the ridiculous shit that leprechaun is going to say between now and August. I am watching it because of the .001% chance that Floyd gets the epic humiliating, legacy destroying defeat that scumbag so richly deserves. I know we are going to get 12 rounds of Floyd hiding behind his shoulder and Connor leaving badly outpointed but never hurt, but if Mystic Mac lands square just once on 40 year old Mayweather..... one can dream. It aint happening, but I will pay $99 for the minuscule chance it might. Fuck Floyd.

I love that analogy, except for the fact that McGregor with 40 years of training still wouldn't be as sharp as Mayweather, just like I could start over and being pitching at age 5 and still not throw like Kershaw.

Come on, man. Don't undersell what Floyd does or how transcendent a talent is. Nobody since Whitaker could go 36 minutes in a space 20 by 20 or smaller and not take one hard shot from world class fighters while repeatedly beating them up. It's like criticizing a pitcher with a good sinker who gets swinging strikes in the dirt for being too scared to throw in the zone.

Exactly. I understand the circus like appeal of this but people don't get it twisted, Floyd is one of the sports sharpest minds in the ring.

Still can't believe this garbage is happening.

Uhhh two ounces? #Sabermetrics

If even a small percentage more ppl buy it, they'll make a lot more money. Making any of the rules more in the middle would give CM more of a chance, and increase viewership I think. Judging by his comments FM thinks that too. I think most ppl watch FM matches hoping he'll lose too.

I do not think McGregor will win. His odds of victory are minuscule in my opinion. But this whole "puncher's chance" theory is a little misguided. Mayweather isn't fighting Tank Abbott. McGregor is one of the most efficient punchers in UFC history. He doesn't knock people out with wild overhand strikes or long, looping hooks like many MMA fighters did in the 90s and early 00s. McGregor is extremely accurate with his power shots and his timing has always been his biggest asset going back to his Cage Warrior days. Contrary to what some keep saying (ESPN), Conor won't be swinging wildly with 100% effort hoping for a lucky punch - that's never been part of his arsenal. At 145 pounds McGregor is the all time UFC leader in significant strikes landed per round and his accuracy is just under 50%. And those numbers are skewed down because it encompasses all those spinning wheel hooks he attempts that never land (those are more for defensive purposes to show his opponent his striking range).

Again, I don't expect him to win but I've seen every one of his fights in person or live on TV/online feed since he beat Dave Hill back in 2012 and I've marveled at his precision punching. It's fair that people are giving him little credit for being the 16 and Under Irish National Boxing Champion (it isn't exactly the New York Golden Gloves) but it demonstrates that he had some skill while boxing exclusively in his youth. The media would have you think he's never seen a ring before and learned to punch by watching Don Frye videotapes.

My point is McGregor has better technical punching skills than people are saying. "Puncher's chance" to me implies a million to one shot of landing a lucky, wild, undisciplined shot. Again, I give him very little chance of winning but let's not act like he's Dalton taking a leave of absence from Double Deuce.

PS - A couple years ago when McGregor first floated the idea of boxing a lot people in the MMA world argued about his amateur history. At some point he definitely competed for and won the "Dublin Novice Boxing Championship" - an amateur boxing event in the city for youth fighters. When people refer to him as a former "16 and Under Irish National Champion" as I did above, that's what I'm referencing. I've heard it said both ways. In any case, his former coach at Crumlin Boxing Club estimated McGregor had around 40 amateur bouts at the youth level.

Mosley hits much harder than McGregor. I know it's not directly transferable, but Mosley benches 350! Maidana hits harder than McGregor, and also landed flush a lot. Mayweather has a very underrated chin.

I'd be lying if I said I've seen either Mosley or Maidana enough to compare their power to McGregor. I did watch the Mosley - Mayweather fight and remember that shot vividly. I absolutely agree that people don't give Floyd enough credit for his chin. But I will also say this, I've stood next to McGregor twice and he isn't a small guy. He's a legit 5'9", has wide shoulders, long arms and looks like a UFC welterweight on fight day (170 lbs). He will be considerably larger than Floyd (who isn't really 5'8") August 26.

The one thing I'd be interested in knowing about is Mayweather's supposed struggle with southpaws. I've probably only seen 8 or 10 Mayweather fights so I can't really give a great analysis but I've heard he hates left handers. I saw him dismantle Judah and Pacquiao but I don't remember any other fights against southpaws. Is this theory true or exaggerated?

Mayweather's best punch is the straight right he obliterated Oscar with. The best punch to throw against a southpaw is a straight right. Conor moves his head about as well as the bartender in the brace in Fight Club. He's going to eat that cross like it was corned beef and cabbage.

As for him being bigger - he beat the everliving shit out of Canelo, who just took down giant Chavez, Jr. and is up against GGG next, so, yeah, I don't think the size will matter much.

The Mayweather being small thing always makes me laugh. Yes he's short but he's not a small dude. As he got older, he knew he would be moving less and made the change. Go look at his chest and shoulders when he was in there with Canelo. He's not that small.

Thanks for posting a reply. To me, the bolded can't be stated enough. People keep saying FM is going to run around the ring dodging haymakers from CM. They don't realize how poor the striking defense can be with even elite MMA fighters. McGregor is going to be on the defensive a lot more than people anticipate. And his face will probably be a mess by round 3 or 4.

My point wasn't that Mayweather is small. It's that McGregor is huge for a guy that fights between 45 and 55. He's like a fucking gorilla.

That's what they said about Chico Corrales. Look, Mayweather started at like 122 or something, so yeah, he's going to be the smaller man. I don't think it'll matter. At all.

And no need to thank me for replying; I ain't Elvis. I'll always talk to you, boo.

The one thing I do wonder, seeing the shitty strike defense of UFC dudes is whether it's partly because they have to focus on so many different strikes and takedowns from so many different angles and levels. Boxers you know you only have to defend against to fists. I can't imagine that doesn't have some effect. Still, McGregor's ability to move his head and avoid punches, even from slow ass Diaz, is poor by any standard.

The only way McGregor stands a chance is if Mayweather suddenly got old overnight and takes McGregor for granted. I don't see either happening and even if that did occur, McGregor would still be a huge underdog. He's gonna get hit a lot. A lot.

And yeah, you do always reply, Marciano. But it's usually about one your fucking watches or models....so thanks for showing your range on all topics. You're like Jim Lampley with knuckle tattoos.

Oh yeah. He's gonna die. Look at his footwork - no knowledge and no awareness to keep his lead foot outside the right hander's so he doesn't eat those crosses.

I love the freak show aspect of this, in much the same way as I imagine the fight fans of old got excited for Christian v Lion, but looking at that video, I think the odds of an upset are similar.

Enjoying the discussion/analysis here, so figured I would throw this question to the group:

My brother works in advertising and some contact of his is all excited for this fight so he may end up with tickets and a hotel room. I get from all the posts so far that this is unlikely to be a decent fight, but do people think it is worth the price of a plane ticket to Vegas to check out the spectacle?

How competitive the fight is doesn't matter a lick. This is going to be a cultural event. One of the very rare fights that will be talked about at water coolers across the country. And it's Vegas. The excitement will be palpable.

I get every UFC ppv at my house. Typically we have 10 people at the house or so...for the UFC in NYC we had 14 I think.

I've already gotten 25 people texting me to see if they can come over. I think this will cost $150 at least and it will be the most ordered event of all time.

I'd expect Connor to never fight again.

I'm definitely going to this. I don't care if it's a good fight or not. Wonder what they'll put on the undercard. I imagine the fight itself will be so big they'll try to stock the undercard with prospects and good fights to showcase talent. It'd be cool if it could be mixed boxing and MMA, but I suppose that'd be difficult with the ring vs. octagon.

Unless they do a few MMA matches first then switch to boxing during a half hour intermission? I have no idea how long it takes to breakdown one and set up the other.

Yeah of course. A trip to Vegas for a big fight and all you need to buy is a plane ticket? If you don't go, I will.

UFC owns Pride, and since this whole thing is a circus, why not? Ship the crazy sounding Japanese lady over for it too.

Google "Connor McGregor spends money". Note the various stories on how much money he blows on suits, cars, mansions etc. There is zero chance that he and his entourage do not piss away his entire purse within 2 years. He will definitely fight again.

The line about fighting under "rules designed to keep Floyd alive" is pretty great
I loved that clip.

Mayweather loves to talk shit, and he's pretty damn good at it, but nobody is as clever in their shit talking as Conor McGregor is. His precipitous rise up the MMA ranks, eventually becoming bigger than the sport itself and earning this huge payday, has had much more to do with his unparalleled ability to self-promote than his incredible fighting skills.

I already have my money on Mayweather and various Mayweather prop bets, but I'd be willing to lose, just so I could watch the country explode.

McGregor has been doing that while making nowhere near what I'm guessing this fight is going to net him though. Plus he's hinted around enough in the past where I think he's smart enough to know that where he is now, which was carefully orchestrated on his part (and creating a flashy persona was part of that), is a very short term thing.

Not to mention how does that even project to play out, and what is he then going to demand to get paid? Mayweather making him look like a complete joke probably takes enough of the shine off where you really can't go back to cherry picking his MMA fights anymore imo, at least without a lot more of those casual marks seeing right through it. So then you are left putting him in there with a Tony/Khabib, he likely gets exposed again on the other side...and it's basically a wrap on his big time earning potential from there.

I think he retires, then teases a MMA comeback that never actually happens. At least while enough people still care about it.

Anybody have an idea what Floyd will weigh on fight night (not weigh ins)? Will he be right at 154 like most are saying? I realize that's the biggest he's fought at in his career, I'm just not sure if he has a history of cutting much or if he ever wanted/needed to.

Initially I believed McGregor would enter the ring around 163, which was his supposed fighting weight against Eddie Alvarez when they fought for the 155 title in November. But rumors coming out of his camp say he plans on being closer to 166-168. Kenny Florian thinks he'll come in around 171 which doesn't make any sense. Shit, when McGregor fought Nate Diaz at 170 pound weight class he only weighed in at 168 and fought at that weight the next night (fwiw, Diaz said he went to bed the night before at 183 pounds and estimated he weighed 181 on fight night for their first fight). Personally, I don't think it makes any sense for Conor to come cut more than 7 or 8 pounds. He's already much slower than Floyd, he doesn't need to be decidedly heavier and worn down from a brutal cut.

I still don't expect Floyd to have any trouble with Conor but if he's giving up more than two inches in height and 12 pounds in weight, this will be Floyd's biggest size disadvantage of his career, right?

And for the people saying he's going to retire after this fight, I wouldn't hold my breath. That's not how this guy is wired. And he and Dana already have a verbal agreement for his first title defense at 155 and Dana says Conor wants it before the end of the year. I know things can change but I'd bet everything I own that McGregor keeps fighting in the UFC at least for the near future.

100% chance we see a "Conor McGregor is broke/bankrupt" article at some point. Guys like him just waste money like water because they can't control themselves. You could give him $100M and he would blow it on the next tier of luxury items.

Again, I just don't think this gives him enough credit. The whole larger the life persona CM has created is essentially a masterpiece of manipulation imo....and completely fake. He doesn't smash though the MMA pay ceiling and get where he is today without putting on the over-the-top show for a cameras. The cars, the suits, the entourage stuff, and all the other bling....that goes into it and is more of a doubling down investment in himself plus having some fun along the way then a lack of self control.

Handshake agreement or not, I just can't see him willingly fighting again for what is going to amount to peanuts after this. Maybe he parlays this into one more PPV score out of the UFC that ends up basically being viewed as a financial bust for them, but other then that he's out. Beating the system and winning bigger then anybody before or after him will. A few years from now he's retired with his health intact in Ireland, out of the spotlight and saying "thanks for the cheese" anytime people do catch up with him.

If McGregor doesn't fight on a UFC card within 12 months of this boxing match I'll donate $500 to the Jimmy Fund. He's not going to be in the octagon at 35 but he certainly isn't retiring at 28 when his only serious injury has been a knee. His ego is too big to walk away, especially after what will probably be a humiliating loss in the boxing right.

For those saying McGregor will walk away, here is Dana talking about that concern ("It's hard to get punched in the face everyday when you've got $75 million in the bank"). This was taped in early March so it was before the boxing match was set and before McGregor told him he'd defend his 155 belt this year (probably against Ferguson who will be a handful for CM). Dana knows it's a possibility that McGregor retires but thinks McGregor isn't the type of guy to walk away so young. He's been a little more emphatic about that in recent interviews.

I teed up the video to when the retirement issue came up - around 17:15 mark. But if you have time, the whole interview is really good. Snoop and he get into UFC's marijuana testing early on in the piece, mostly regarding Diaz.

Dave Meltzer posted this note on his site;

"One thing notable when it comes to the promotion of Mayweather-McGregor is that the promoters are listed as Showtime, Mayweather Promotions, McGregor Sports & Entertainment and the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and not UFC."
