He had made his decision before Hakstol fled.
 
Edit: A lot of guys leave after their junior year because they weren't drafted and you are eligible to sign 3 years after your draft year (or something close to that)

College hockey you can leave at any time. 
 
There is a point at 4 years after your draft I believe where you start having more leverage because FA is an option. Zane is now 5 years after his draft

The Bruins rights to Zane would've expired in either June or July. He could've used the Wheeler (or more recently Kevin Hayes) loophole to become a UFA, but he seems pretty loyal to the Bruins. I'm sure Svedberg's departure helped things, as he has a chance at an NHL role immediately.
