Funny, because upon reading the previous tweet my thought was, "It seems like Alderson keeps hiring chumps just so he can run everything himself".

The list of people who have publicly turned down the Mets so far is pretty hilarious.

How long will it be until the "growing short list" for the Mets includes someone who died 2-3 years ago?

Seven people have turned them down so far, the full list is in this piece.

I want to remind everyone here about the decision the Mets made after the 2018 season, when their final two candidates for this job were Brodie Van Wagenen (an agent with no personnel experience and tons of conflicts of interest) and some guy named Chaim Bloom. Good job, Mets.

Jays denied the Mets request to interview Shapiro
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/10/__trashed-9.html

That's too bad. The Jays core was built by Alex Anthopoulos. I think Shapiro has benefited from that work and I thought he wasn't good in Cleveland either, not being able to quite put them over the top
Shapiro has been a really good personnel guy, as evidenced by his tree of former employees in other organizations. His specialty is hiring the right people and letting them do their thing, but he's not much of a baseball mind himself. Cleveland didn't miss a beat when he was promoted to team president or when he left for Toronto, because Chris Antonetti had already been making the baseball decisions for years.

I've never understood how Ross Atkins has failed his way towards the top, though. It seems like he's been Shapiro's worst hire, or at least Cleveland's worst farm director during my lifetime, but Shapiro has a blind spot about him. He could be a very Metsian hire if given the chance.

They chose ... poorly.

This is going to end with Sandy Alderson hiring himself, followed by a quick scandal and somehow Mayim Bialik will end up as the new Mets GM. Next spring fans will picket outside demanding LeVar Burton be given the job.

A longtime MLB executive on GM candidates shunning the Mets: "I don't get it. It's the NY Mets. It's the pinnacle of the sport."

All the people turning them down to-date have other options and are likely self aware enough to not jump at the first GM spot that presents itself without regard to the situation. Not exactly a grand mystery.

Somebody will take that job eventually as the Mets work down their list, because money, power, and holyshitIcantbelieveIcouldrunateam.

I’m half wondering whether that reporter is just massaging some sources/potential sources inside the Mets.

2031 is the next Mets World Series appearance. Waited 13 years - '73-'86, then 14 - '86-'00, then 15 - '00-'15. 16 years makes it '31.
