Really? I think the "Trenni & Rich" morning shows they do are horrendous. Lame ass stuff, but maybe that's more Rich's fault.

My gut tells me it will probably be Tanguay. It seems like he gets a new shot every five years or so. It's his time. I wonder who will replace him in eight months.

Mut has been great since he lost his show. Edgier. Though if I didn't know different - I wouldn't have even noticed Benz replaced Mut aside from him being a Steelers fan.

Great at what? Giving mid game updates during the Sox? I honestly don't even know what he does these days otherwise.

I can't believe what I'm about to say, but if Tanguay or Dickerson are the realistic alternatives, I'm rooting for Ordway.

I think they go Ordway, given that his being back as a fill in on D&C greases the skids.  He's a name and the no-names of Salk, Mutnansky, and Benz have flopped ridiculously.  Any new no-name will suffer the same fate. He knows how to run a show and the Celts, and Merloni and Fauria can chime in on baseball and football.  Plus, now they can get him super cheap and the Dale re-hire precedent is there.

The 10-2 show has a very low ceiling, and they just need to get it back out from under the floor and they will view that as good enough.

Would Neumy ever be welcomed back?  He works with Lou on the baseball show.
Failing that, maybe they could shake Thornton loose instead of going full retread, though I understand they need an actual "host" host.
I just can't believe they would keep reusing Ordway in a permanent gig.

Thornton is solid in his current role and has no business hosting his own show, so that's a good chance WEEI will make him the host of the midday show.

It would be poetic justice if the end result here is Ordway and Merloni in the mid-day followed by Dale and Holley in afternoon drive, considering back when WBZ started up, EEI locked up Merloni and the suspicion was he'd be installed on the Big Show as a permanent host, making it Dale and Holley followed by Ordway and Merloni.

Ordway is fine but why isn't EEI opting to put some younger talent in prime slots?

Because they're WEEI and don't know how to develop a bench in case things like this happen. Bertrand was on Felger and Mazz' show for a number of years and had a Saturday morning show with Chris Gasper. When the Hub wanted to make a change with Gresh, Bertrand was already a known quantity and had years of experience, he could easily slide in. With EEI they run the same out the same old retreads in Mustard and Johnson along with new guys with no future like Danny Picard. Arcand does get shifts here and there, but they're sporadic and they're during times when no one is listening -- which is too bad because he's pretty good.

According to Minihane, it appears Tanguay is going to be the permanent 3rd wheel replacing Benz.

Kirk Minihane @kirkmin
That's my understanding, yes. It will be announced at 10:05. @Matty_Wentworth @Gary_Tanguay @kirkmin wait is he permanently on the midday show?

Awful. They have no idea what they are doing over there. I would occasionally check in middays before, but Tanguay and his hot takes is a deal breaker.

Classic WEEI.  Going from bad to worse.  How does Tanguay keep getting gigs?  Incredible.

Good for Tanguay. He's some how managed to make his career survive for another 18 months or so. Guy used to be on CSNNE all the time (still is?), have a full time gig at 98.5, hosted the Patriots Pre & Post game on 98.5, was rumored at one point to get the Pats play by play gig (yah right, but he at least seemed to believe it) Now he's the 3rd wheel behind Merloni and Fauria? ouch.

Terrible for WEEI and pretty much everyone in New England.

Another awful move by WEEI, if you're going to hire a retread why not go for Ordway? At least that might generate some buzz.

Because someone has to read the news, take the callers and get in and out of breaks. Neither merloni or fauria is a "radio" guy.

Honest to God, I know it's common around here to say people are dumb, but Gary Tanguay is truly one of the dumbest people to ever land a regular gig on any radio station that I've ever heard.  He cannot string two logical points together, nor is he capable of critical thinking.   He is the worst of the worst of "hot sports takes"  He must be a nice guy, or willing to take shit from management, or get paid $.30 cents on the dollar or some other explanation to continue to get these jobs.  There's no other explanation.  None.

Yeah Friday or whenever it was last week when it was just Lou and Fauria wasn't good. With those two, you need an emcee-type to run the show. I actually thought Dickerson did well during the fill-in, with thoughtful discussions and not playing to the radio shtick of just taking contrarian positions to provoke stupid, rabbit-hole arguments.

Congrats to Gare Bear.  I gotta wonder what Dickerson is thinking at this point.  Tanguay still has the Arbella Early Edition to fall back on if he didn't get this job.

Tanguay's not permanent, is he?    The midday show is mostly awful, but if I go out at lunch, I'll put it on.   If Tanguay is now full time, it's dead to me.   I enjoyed Minihane belittling him last week (and the caller who asked if any facts could get through his awful purple wig), but that's about the extent of Tanguay's entertainment value.

As far as I can tell it was a troll job by Minehane. Tanguay is supposedly in the running but he doesn't have the job.
Quite an effective troll it seems.

I wouldn't mind a Battle Royale type deal the next 3 weeks watching Tanguay, Dickerson, and Big O go head-to-head leading into Week 1 of the Pats. I'm not a huge Dickerson fan, but I can't deny that he was a good facilitator with Lou and Christian last week. I think the benefits to each are quantifiable:

Tanguay - look at twitter this morning. When did MFB ever get that type of cross-platform participation? Gary's contrarian shtick, albiet manufactured, seems to bring some very *unique* internet-comments out of the woodwork. Everyone loves a whipping boy.

Dickerson - was comfortable and professional with MF last week, seems to know when to get out of the way with these two, much the way he does on the Sunday Football show with Price. Has a propensity to go off-script, which definitely will turn some dials.

Big O - legend. This dude invented the game for EEI, and probably does deserve the first shot at showing he can bring out M and F's strengths while facilitating good discussion and guiding the ship, as we know he can. The biggest flaw with the Big Show over time was the format just lent itself to the same crew getting together and yelling over eachother. That doesn't mean the Big O can't produce great radio. We know he'll at least produce good advertising revenue, despite the difficulty he had with Unfiltered.

WEEI fails again. Talk about a retread loser hire.

Only in WEEI, they also have to set something up where they have Fauria and Merloni bag on Tanguay in the promos and during the crossover, which is somehow supposed to make people want to watch it.

Tanguay really does suck. I have said in the past that I have a remarkably high tolerance for bad radio (probably because my mom listened to Howard Lawrence Carr when I was growing up) but when I found out Tanguay was going to be on the show today, I decided I couldn't listen to WEEI until 2 pm. I really wanted WEEI to use someone new and fresh in that spot, but that was a fantasy.

Tanguay read the sports updates at 10 AM today. He noted that Frank Gifford had died, then said "That means Kathy Lee is available." He's not only stupid but insensitive as well.

The only personal benefit to me is that I only ever catch about 5 minutes of MFB, and now it's Rome.  Even if he's interviewing college basketball coaches.  If Tanguay's hired then I don't have to ever listen to him in the morning again.

FWIW D&C's ex-con caller tweeted today that Dennis will take over Benz's spot and Ordway will slide into the morning show. Probably zero chance this is true since this guy is obviously not playing with a full deck, but it's amusing to imagine, at least.

As stupid as this may sound, my theory on why he sticks around, especially in radio, is his voice. He truly has some great radio pipes, even though the content it generates is, shall we say, lacking.

The idea that the only reason Tanguay is around is due to his voice isn't exactly a novel idea, it is pretty much the accepted reason for his existence.

Amusingly enough Tanger thinks his voice has hurt his career since people think it is the only reason he is in radio and they dismiss his deep thoughts. I swear I actually heard him say pretty much this.

He did show up on Twitter looking like a woman. He's in need of a serious make over. Is he in a midlife crisis?

Ordway sat in on CSNNE's "Sports Tonight" a decent amount the past year and I have to admit, I actually enjoyed him.  I think the firing from EEI combined with his inability to get an audience on his podcast actually humbled the guy.  Sitting in the TV studio with Merloni, Felger, Beetle, etc, brought out a funny, likable, rational talking head.  A complete change from the arrogant slob yukking it up with Smerlas and DeOssie.

Even if he's not a perfect fit, he's better than Tanguay.

Did Tanguay think taking the anti-homer stance on the biggest local sports story in years was going to help him get a job at WEEI? He has listened to the station before, right?

I'm convinced they've had Tanguay on so much of late only to make bringing back Ordway seem monumentally better by comparison.

I don't understand... why waste all that time with Dickerson and Girardi and Tanguay and Picard, and not ONCE bring in Ordway to see how he'd fit with Merloni and Fauria, when apparently it was Ordway they wanted all along? Why not just bring Ordway in sooner or at least announce it sooner?

I really liked Dickerson with Merloni and Fauria, but beyond my personal disappointment that he won't be getting the gig, I'm just confused as to why WEEI would waste everyone's time without even testing how Ordway would be with the other two guys.

I don't get the Ordway hate,  when he's good he's really good it's just that he got so convinced that what he was doing was better than everyone else he refused to change.  I think this is a good thing.

He helped break Merloni in to the business to the point where it was supposed to be Merloni with Felger instead of Mazz.  There is already a relationship and history there and it will be up to Fauria to keep up and fit in.
