Nice performance and comeback by Palace. After a brutal start to their schedule, they're finally into the part where they should be winning some games. I feel pretty confident about them being top half at the WC break, and hopefully more in the "challenging for the Conference League" area, which was my more optimistic outlook.

Need them to keep it up with Ted Lasso presumably making its return soon.

Great slate of midweek EPL matches today:

Bournemouth-Southampton
Brentford-Chelsea
Liverpool-WHU
Newcastle-Everton
MAN U-Spurs

Bournemouth have recovered from a brutal schedule to start the season, and have settled in nicely in the middle of the table. Southampton OTOH, look like they're going to be in the relegation fight. Fortunately for them, there's some catchable clubs currently ahead of them.

Brentford are off to a good start this season, and currently ahead of where they finished last season. Despite the boat rocking considerably, with a win Chelsea are very much within the league leader and firmly in top 4 position. Terrific matchup, especially with the match in Brentford.

Liverpool-WHU pits perhaps the 2 most underperforming clubs in the EPL so far against each other. Terrific matchup (no snark intended).

Everton face a tough fixture away at St. James Park. Almiron, Wilson, and Guimaraes are all off to terrific starts, and the defense has settled very well and they're currently the league leaders in goals against. Based on GD, they're actually a bit unlucky not to be sitting top 4 right now.

And finally, MAN U-Spurs presents a huge test for both sides. A win for MAN U creates some separation between them and Newcastle for 5th and is a big step in catching up to the top 4 pace. Spurs probably would accept a draw away at Old Trafford, but with MAN U presumably coming out on the front foot it presents an opportunity for Conte to setup for the counter. COYS!!

Alisson wasn’t historically This strong with penalties. Going back a bit, LFC have had some success there. I’ve ripped on their GK coach, Atcherberg, an awful lot. Maybe he’s good at coaching them.

Jones first appearance since the Community Shield? Good to see him.

Man Utd are wasting lots of threatening possession by continually taking low-percentage shots from 25 yards

Arsenal went into halftime up 3-1 at Lyon. That's an eye-opening scoreline.

It took United about 15 minutes or so to figure out their pressing patterns, but once they did they've been much the better side. But they keep wasting it by taking so many shots outside the box. As a result United really only created one good chance in the first half, when Rashford got through and Lloris saved. Shots are 19-5 but penalty box shots are 5-4.

still a very Jekyl and Hyde performance. Nunez was a real bright sport and could have had a hattrick (good save and solid post shot)....

So it looks like the flag went up for Harry's close range effort that was blocked by DDG. Why isn't the ref obligated to stop play, and have United take a FK? It's relevant since United then broke on the counter and scored...FML

Howe turned Joelinton into a solid box-to-box mid last year, and now he’s got Almiron scoring goals like he’s still in Atlanta. I would like him to come coach me at my job.

Arsenal have run riot in Lyon, up 5-1 in stoppage time. Eye popping result. Arsenal’s first ever win in Lyon & a huge let down for the defending champs.

Spurs didn't even get a glove on United, barring a miraculous final 10 minutes. Very annoying performance for a Spurs fan.

Five mins after a straight red for Douglas Luiz, Fulham get a penalty to go 2-0 up. Harsh penalty. Stevie has aged ten years.

Gerrard def does not seem up for EPL level management yet. Had the new manager bounce last season but they’ve looked absolutely awful - he needs some time in the championship

FSG?

Guessing expectations were sky high given the investment in the summer. Pricey additions , if generally stupid (looking at you Coutinho)

isn't his replacement at Rangers also in trouble too? if van Bronckhurst gets sacked, perhaps Rangers take Gerrard back

The arrogance of these guys to think they can just go to Derby or Rangers for 14 months and then get a job in the Premiership just because.

They’re not the ones making the hire, which if I’m picking up your ironic through the internet is your point?

Nope...I expect shallow stupidity from the vapid billionaires that own these teams and are looking for a PR heavy hire for their playthings.
Watching guys like Lamps and Gerrard attempt to speed their way to the top of the heap when they should have had enough self-awareness to recognize they aren't prepared for that level...I mean, I think it's kind of funny, but it doesn't speak highly to me.

Pep managed Barcelona B for a year before taking over the first team. Zinedine didn’t have that much more experience before taking over at Real Madrid.

I'm backing Lampard. His man management and coaching up of players is very good - several players have made big strides under him. Tactically, I'd give him a B-. He's like Churchill said about Americans, he'll do the right thing after he's exhausted all alternatives. His biggest flaw imo is he's way too late and stingy with the subs. You have to give him a bit of a mulligan on these latter points since he's rarely had his best XI at his disposal due to injuries and his best XI isn't all that good.

He's got the fans and the players onside which is something that Gerrard never did. You have to give him credit for reversing the free fall under Rafa and keeping us up.

His legendary status as a player is an advantage in the transfer windows, he can get a better cut of player to consider Everton than might otherwise.

But yeah, if you want to say that there are dozens of guys who paid their dues who deserved a shot ahead of him, I agree.
