I think one of the dumbest things he said today was that Cano could go down as the best 2B in history.
I heard that too. He did however say that he would have to keep doing this for a long time but that won't happen. Cano already has no concept of plate discipline, the .381 OBP last year was fueled by a buttload of IBB, and that body of his won't age well. Too big and bulky.

Continuing from yesterday, just awesome bitch slapping of Yankee fans complaining about post-season failure. Totally buying *random walk* of the playoffs, citing Beane. Crucifying the insanity of building the roster based on playoff performance. Callers equally apoplectic arguing opposing view.

It's awesome, People are calling, advocating that they ditch Teixeira, suggesting alternate lineups for game 5 that would have had Posada catching and A-Rod batting 9th

Mike's screaming -- ok, then get rid of Ted Williams, greatest hitter who ever lived. Don't play Yogi or Willie Mays or Barry Bonds in the WS. Sample size, brothers -- you never know when they are going to start to hit.

Callers are not backing down.

Yup. This is the best I've ever heard Mike talk about baseball (outside of the collapse of 2004).

Caller: Mike, Teixeira was brought in to win World Championships.
Mike: Well what do you want to do with him then?
Caller: Get rid of him!
Mike: Okay, you're gonna get rid of a guy who hits 35-40 homeruns and plays gold glove defense. What happens when the next guy you bring in can't hit in the postseason?
Caller: I'm bringing him Albert Pujols!
Mike: Ugghhh! It's not that simple. Typical Yankee fan.

I couldn't believe he actually said that last part in disgust. Now you know how I feel, Mike.

Revis just got testy when Mike said the Marshall play on Monday was a penalty. Things got contentious and a Jet PR guy got on the phone and instructed Revis to hang up. Worth a listen when they post it.

And now Mike and the callers are discussing it....this might serve to bring a LOT of attention to how Revis holds and manhandles recievers on mostly every play, and if that happens, that is a good thing...

Here's the interview:

Entertaining interview, yeah Revis was getting a little heated and doing the awful "you're not a football player" argument, but the PR guy should have let it go.

Link

Also hilarious that Francesa starts off the interview with "you're the only Jets player that talks to me."

Tubby Francesa is an overbearing douchebag, but Revis literally could not have handled that any worse. And the Jets PR guy knows better - for him to counsel Revis to hang up is beyond stupid, because it validates every bit of criticism that will be coming from Francesa in the near future.

Textbook case of how not to interact with the media.

Seriously, all it would have taken from Revis is a chuckle and a "hey, refs didn't see it so it wasn't a penalty", implying a little bit of guilt and that he got away with something, and all would have been fine. It's not like if Revis admitted to committing a penalty then the NFL would have reversed the outcome of the game or anything. It was a thin-skinned response.

He is clearly the #1 corner in the league, and everyone knows it, but it's like he feels it is on his shoulders to keep pointing that out to everyone, instead of letting other people point it out.

I thought one caller made a great point. When Mike was praising Revis and calling him the best defensive player in football, his observations were great. When he called the Marshall play a penalty, which it was, all of sudden his opinion was invalid because he's not a player. Interesting logic. I know Francesa routinely criticizes the Jets, but the organization looks awfully thin skinned in this instance. Having the PR guy on the phone telling Revis to hang up was amateur hour.

Pretty amazing some PR flack interrupts the call to tell Revis to hang up. Mike was a little annoying, but he'd dropped the topic, and it was Revis who went back to it and then acted badly. The Jets have had a tough few days in the media, which obviously doesn't mean much now.

I hope this means Francesca keeps going hard at the Jets, because I always enjoy Jet bashing.

caller just asked him on his Sunday NFL show if the reason he has animosity towards the Jets is that there's a rumor he was turned down for their GM position years ago...Francesa answers it by saying he's never considered leaving the position he has and has always renewed his 5yr deals one year early...no mention how about how he's not qualified or how silly the notion was of the jets offering him the job...

Mike totally sold on the Cards winning tonight, doesn't give Texas much of a chance.
Mike, like many other people, is under the impression that storylines win games. Just about any single baseball game between two good teams ia a 50/50 proposition. I seem to remember him claiming that the Yankees wouldn't lose on Mickey Mantle's birthday too.

If the Rangers were the "folding" type of team, they wouldn't have scored 2 in the 10th inning yesterday.

Or, maybe, just maybe he knew what he was talking about. Heresy to suggest here, I admit.

Or, maybe, just maybe the Rangers had a fine chance in that game. If I said tails didn't have much of a chance in a coin flip and heads came up, it doesn't mean I knew what I was talking about. It's not like they blew the Rangers out of the building last night.

Francesa today talking dispassionately about the Giants-Patriots matchup. Except for his Yankees bias and Mets disdain, Mike is usually pretty even with his sports views. He said today the Patriots' poor defense is not a new story. It has been going on for years. "Brady and the offense have been carrying the Patriots for years" is how he put it. Then he goes off on the Giants and their problems on defense.

I think Mike could care less if the Giants win on Sunday. Do we get that kind of neutrality in Philly or Boston? Usually the radio hosts in those cities are caustic observers who deep down are rooting for the home team. I don't see that with Francesa.

If there's one thing Mike knows, it's football. He knows the Giants aren't as good as their 5-2 record and go into this game as underdogs. I also think that Mike was a bigger Giant fan when his BFF Bill Parcells was there. He's definitely not a Jet fan, but he's a realist when it comes to the Giants.

He sort of defended Belichick today, too, saying the Patriots lack playmakers on defense, especially in the secondary, and can't be "coached up" the way many of his previous teams could. No big secret to any of us in New England.

actually, there's two things mike knows. horse racing is the other. he just spent an hour with two top trainers, talking the lingo. it's an important sport for about 10 weeks a year, especially in the NY/NJ region.

Yeah I have heard him state on several occasions that he has no preference for any particular nfl team. However, it was always obvious that he heavily supported whatever team Parcells was coaching. They sometimes used to open M&MD on Monday's with recaps of "Bill's Cowboys" games.

My understanding was always that Mike grew up cheering for the Giants and became friends with Parcells. Their friendship was so close that he just cheered for whomever Bill was coaching at the time. Am I wrong about this?

All that said, he is usually exceedingly fair in evaluating the local teams. The Yankees are the team he roots for the most and he airs them out when they are playing poorly.

Mike is doing a great job on the Paterno stuff. The interview with Kim Jones from yesterday (Penn State alum) is fantastic. In light of Penn State cancelling Paterno's camp, I think Mike will crush Penn State at 1:00.

So is Mike off this week or something. I came to this thread hoping to read some good stuff about the Jets coming up small when it counts most and there's nothing here. Where's my schadenfreude dammit‽

No, he's in this week. Yesterday he went down the well-traveled "the Jets are just not ready to play with the big boys" road. Praised Brady and BB for the game, talked about how Sanchez was still learning/not ready for prime time in light of how Brady played, and so forth. Not really upset at all. Callers I heard mostly agreed with Mike (stunning, I know).

Mike on PSU today (mild paraphrase):

"Everything revolves around the barbershop in a small town. Think about Hoosiers or Andy Griffith. Those guys knew what was going on. You can get a lot of information from there."

Going out on a limb but Mike doesn't seem to like Rex...though expected more venom, hopefully on way with the calls.

Mike gets a little ornery with a caller who suggests the Jets 'almost won a Super Bowl'.

'Almost won? How do you win a Super Bowl if you haven't even played in one? Cawwwwwm down.'

Went ballistic over defense of Jets defense.

*You know what your defense did last night? It pitched 8 scoreless inns and gave up a 3-run HR in the 9th to lose 3 to 2. You don't come off the mound saying, 'we pitched great'.*

Caller --

I want to hear 3 things right now.

1. From Rex -- we stink right now.

2. From Tannenbaum -- I'm not the genius everyone thinks I am.

3. from Westhoff -- I can't find a punter.

Mike concurs.

Very good radio. Callers are almost inconsolable.
