Brett Gardner is more Juan Pierre than he is Jacoby Ellsbury. And he has a long ways to go to become an in-his-prime Pierre.
Wow, had an incredibly similar discussion with a MFY fan-dad just yesterday, but he also threw Carl Crawford into the mix.Brett Gardner is more Juan Pierre than he is Jacoby Ellsbury. And he has a long ways to go to become an in-his-prime Pierre.
Heard the family totally forgot about Joba's son. By the time they found him hours later, he was all alone, by himself, watching it all play out on LIVE television.Francesa tells the nation about Joba...
That's Beck'd up.it was announced tonight that Francesa will no longer do his Sunday Night NBC show...
It seems like Bruce Beck has been doing it pretty steadily for a while now. I wonder if they will keep "Bruce'd Up" or just kill it altogether.it was announced tonight that Francesa will no longer do his Sunday Night NBC show...
It's been almost two years since M & MD split up. Initially, Mike promised on-air to find a new partner and there were many names rumored to join him. One was Max Kellerman, who had recently been dismissed by 1050 ESPN, but there was nothing to that. (For those who don't know, I-Max joined the 710 ESPN LA lineup sometime in the past 6-8 months...)
In the first few months of Francesa's solo show, he was noticeably warmer to his callers, and I'm guessing that the station Operations Manager, Mark Chernoff, had spoken to him. (I'm also guessing that the FAN had done some market research among core listeners asking them their opinions on him.)
At some point in the last year, the FF has definitely reverted to his bullying ways, berating callers. I'll admit, for me, it's somewhat of a guilty pleasure listening to him talk down from his throne to his listeners. But I'm sure I'm not the only one of us who also enjoys it when a caller makes, to Mike, what is a "preposterous" statement. Mike goes on to criticize it and then the caller's statement turns out to have validity and Mike...magically...claims the statement as his own.
His ratings continue to beat up Kay's. I wonder if other SoSHers are listening to Mike'd Up more or less than they used to when it was M & MD. (BTW, I finally got Sirius in the spring and listen to the Doggy from time to time when I'm in my car.)
I will still tune in if there's something major happening in Yankeeland, like a trade or a big loss or some other drama, like with Posada earlier in the year. But other than that, no. It's not his arrogance and bullying that bothers me, he's always been like that, but he's just so boring by himself. He's still a good interviewer, and I don't listen often enough to really know, but it seems like he doesn't get the same quantity and quality of guests that he did before with Chris. It's been almost two years since M & MD split up. Not two years, three years. They split in August of 2008. Russo has two more years on his five-year contract w/ Sirius XM.It's been almost two years since M & MD split up.
I used to listen to them all the time, now hardly ever. I never liked Mike but have to admit that unlike Steve Summers, Richard Near, etc he sure knows a lot of stuff that I can't get anywhere else. But the reason I don't listen anymore is that the show simply isn't any fun anymore. Dog had real moments of greatness. mike never does. Dog the day after the Sox beat the Yankees in 2004 said everything that any Red Sox fan would ever want to say about that game. Even Mike was good on that day. it was just great radio. Never happens any' more. It's been almost two years since M & MD split up. Initially, Mike promised on-air to find a new partner and there were many names rumored to join him. Totally. I would stream if I could. Someone keep us up to date if he lets loose the hounds in 2 hours.A rare summer afternoon on the air for Mike today and I think we may just get a nice little Yankees rant to open the show. Fingers crossed.
I have to give Mike credit. He says he's tired of people saying "big deal, the HR to right off Mo and Burnett were just a couple of cheapies. Because you can't say that as a Yankee fan. Half their homeruns are hit in the same spot. You can't disregard HRs that go in the first few rows of right field unless you do the same with all the ones that Teixeira, Granderson, and Swisher hit there."so how was it?
I think the special circumstances warrant special considerations. Pryor had the opportunity to enter the draft in April but chose not to, even knowing the 5-game suspension was coming. Had he simply declared himself for the draft then, I doubt he's serving the five games. But because he decided after the regular draft to leave school, and he needed to petition to be eligible for the supplemental draft (meaning he didn't fit the normal criteria for it), a compromise situation was in order.Francesa's right. And why wasn't Pete Carroll suspended? It's a fair question.
Mike Francesca? Over-valuing his own opinions? His own worth?Francesca droning on about 9/11, I guess trying to stoke up some righteous indignation over the Mets not being allowed to wear first responder hats during the game. He's just gone on and on about his experiences watching the 9/11 ceremonies on TV. Riveting stuff.
Sorry, but I don't want to hear about 9/11 stuff from him. Why do sports guys feel the need to talk about Important Things? I don't care what they think about Important Things. I want to hear about the games. That's why I listen to sports radio. If I want to hear about Important Things, I'll tune into the news, or some place where they discuss Important Things regularly. It's like sports guys get bored by the games. Where can you go if you just want to hear about sports?
The Mets wore first responded hats in 2007 against the Braves, so I don't know whose ass Torre pulled his excuse from:I guess, but it just seems endless. It's the first week of the football regular season. There are some fun games to talk about. Why aren't we hearing about them? Instead, it's a parade of sanctimony and a bunch of guys from Queens complaining about MLB ("It's all economics, man!").
However, Torre is an idiot. Every team needs to do exactly the same thing, so the Mets couldn't wear different caps? Why, exactly? Who cares if there's a slippery slope -- maybe that makes things more interesting.
Mets-BravesThe teams observed a pregame moment of silence to mark the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Mets also wore hats from eight New York City departments that sustained losses that day, and a firefighter sang the national anthem.
Hernandez, sporting an FDNY hat, struggled in his first start since he gave up five runs and six hits over three innings at Philadelphia on Aug. 30. He traveled back to New York after that shaky outing and got a cortisone shot in his sore right foot.
I wonder if all of MLB had hats with the American flag on them in 2007. Torre seems to be saying that since all the other teams had the special caps, the Mets had to wear the special caps sanctioned by MLB (and being sold on their website) instead of the first responder caps (that MLB wouldn't make any money off of). It was a ridiculous edict from MLB made worse by them confiscating the caps from the team after the pre-game ceremonies. The Mets wore first responded hats in 2007 against the Braves, so I don't know whose ass Torre pulled his excuse from:
Mets-Braves
I hope people are mentioning that - this isn't even a new idea from the Mets.
I don't mean to derail your overall point which I agree with but it was 2001 obviously and not 2007. Sorry for the nitpicky correction. The poster right below you made the exact same mistake so I thought I would correct it.The Mets wore first responded hats in 2007 against the Braves, so I don't know whose ass Torre pulled his excuse from:
Mets-Braves

It obviously wasn't 2001 because the link is from 2007 and I was watching the game.
So correct yourself, thanks.
The confusion is coming from the fact that the Mets also wore first responder caps in the first game back against the Braves in 2001.It obviously wasn't 2001 because the link is from 2007 and I was watching the game.
So correct yourself, thanks.
ESPN Game RecapThe umpires, along with the Mets, wore caps representing the city's police, fire and emergency personnel during the game. B.J. Surhoff and other Braves from the local area wore them in warmups.
That's my point - they've done this several times. I wouldn't be surprised if they've done it at other home games on 9/11 between 2001 and 2007.The confusion is coming from the fact that the Mets also wore first responder caps in the first game back against the Braves in 2001.
