They clearly still have it when together. Thoroughly enjoyable listen even with the Pats hate

Vinho: thanks so much for posting this. What a treat. Brings back a lot of great memories for me. I've always thought these two to be miles ahead of all the Boston guys and of Mike by himself. I put in a lot of hours listening to them back in the day. I also couldn't care less if they bash the Sox or any other team I care about. In my opinion the two of them together are just the best. Thanks again.

They should be the exemplar when trying to explain synergy to anyone

I'm sure it worked out better for both of them financially to part ways. But neither one of them is very listenable alone. Together, they were far and away the best show in the history of the genre. Even with the Boston bashing(although Russo was always solidly in the Red Sox camp, if for no other reason than to antagonize the big fella). It's always remarkable to me how instantly they fall back into the same great chemistry and energy whenever they have these little once and while reunions. With Mike leaving FAN in December, the up-thread suggestion of a once a week Friday show on Sirius is a great idea. That alone would keep me renewing.

Their show after Game 7 ALCS in 2004 was as good as anything, anywhere, ever. Even the audio clips they picked for the cold open of players and the managers talking- still gives me chills.

So much better together. Mike is unlistenable now.

Interesting that Mike might have something already lined up.

Wild guess here - but Mike is still friendly with Imus. I can see him ending up on 770-AM in New York.

Mike loves politics and I can see him doing a show that allows a mix.

To give credit, when he opened the show he showed tremendous respect to Brady Belichick and the team, as a going concern for 15 years, something that is unprecedented, and to be admired. of course, as the show wears own, his shtick overtakes him, I truly believe he doesnt even realize how deep his bias or anger lay. and you KNOW if the Pats lose today, he will till the sun burns out, be saying, the Pats were 4=3 in the superbowl, and except for the worst call in the history of the league ( his words) they would be under .500. IF the Pats win, and are 5-2 in superbowls, Mike is basically screwed.

That's why the Marlins are a better franchise than the Yankees.
His counter is that 'our society punishes Super Bowl losers.' He would say baseball/football comps are apples and oranges. Not saying it's right but he would dismiss this argument quickly and not give it much thought.

Isn't his argument about specific "dynasties" or coach/player combos rather than franchise history? 4-0 refers to Montana's Niners or Bradshaw's Steelers, just as 4-2 refers to the Brady/Belichick Patriots. So the comparison to the total history of the Yankees falls flat.

Probably better to argue that the Jeter era Yankees are inferior to the Henry-owned Red Sox because the Sox are 3-0 in the WS and the Yankees are 5-2.

When they used to actually watch the college games and teams they talked about.
To be fair, with the advent of one-and-done in college basketball, no one cares in NYC anymore. 30 years ago Georgetown- St. John's was the hottest ticket in town. Now St. John's gets less ink than the MLS teams, and the big national programs aren't followed much either.

Uconn women got higher TV ratings on any in their against temple on SNY than the Knicks, nets and every men's game on espn family, cbs family and NBC family in NYC when they played that night. NYC cares about college basketball BUT the conference realignment stuff has generally deflated the interest in all college sports in the northeast. From Boston to D.C. It's way down. College sports are southeast, Midwest and Texas. Trump's America

Appointment listening tomorrow.

Will the Sports Pope bend the knee to Belichick and Brady or will he go on an epic rant against the Falcons?
This is the easiest prediction in the history of ever.

He'll begin by being complementary and gracious. By about 1:45, he'll start to emphasize that the 2 losses means that The Pats record is not as good as the Steelers or 49ers dynasties. Then - around 2:30 - he'll start in on cheating and the show will go downhill.

I dont know....he is done in a year....I think he throws in the towel, and says I give up, they and he are the greatest ever.

Let's see how many of these talking points I get right.
Brady can't throw the deep ball,
they're just a dink and dunk QB / team,
they can't score points in the first quarter,
Atlanta folded, made it easy for Brady, "any QB coulda done that",
Patriots ran 93 plays and only scored 34 points, they shoulda scored 54 points, Atlanta ran half as many plays and scored 28.
everything Belichick knows about football he learned from Parcells,
and at some point before he retires--the overtime rules are not fair.

This one is going to kill him because it's his last rodeo in the big chair

He'll pat himself on the back for picking the Pats. There will be a nod to Brady. He will then spend the rest of the show blaming the Falcons coaches -- just like he blamed the last one on the Seahawks coaches.

There was a neat little scene cut from The Godfather -- Genco dying of cancer in the hospital.

That's Mike. That's the way he is going out, and he's not getting over it anytime soon, if ever.

Write it down, bet on it: the running narrative from fatso on Monday will be not the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history but the biggest choke in Super Bowl history. And Belichick and Brady still cannot be considered the greatest ever because they have two Super Bowl losses, no matter how may Super Bowl wins they end up with.

He'll say the game was over and then the Falcons blew it by passing on their last drive

This is scary accurate.

But I just want to point out that the Edelman catch will be met with a typical "Howdaheck duz that happen". It will be echoed by the callers. Enjoy it.

But I also think he will fade into admiration as the week goes on. I just can't imagine any other spin at this point.

Well gee, guys, that overtime victory now mean that this year counts for nothing - NOTHING! - in terms of evaluating Brady's post-season record. He's still just a .500 QB in seasons where the Pats don't win the Super Bowl!

Mike will be twisting himself into pretzels to try and diminish last night. It will be a great listen.

If I had to bet, I'd put money on him saying something like, “But let’s be honest, if the Falcons had just run the ball three times after getting the ball to the Pats 22, they kick a FG and the game is over, so the Pats got lucky there like they did when Carroll passed the ball in the Seattle game.”

Yup. And he is going to be pissed about it.

Narrative -- they were handed last 2 SB wins by coaching blunders

This does seem to be the narrative this morning by a certain segment of people grasping at straws. Which means this will absolutely be Mike's take.

Side note: it's crazy how cynical you have to be to not be amazed by the past 15 years. But, this is the modern media, I guess.

Just heard Boomer and Carton on the FAN

Carton: Dan Quinn coached like a Jets coach. Now you can see why the Jets wanted him so bad.

Mike has a few angles he can take. I won't get to hear it, so I'll be looking here for the greatest hits.

Everyone saying the same thing doesn't sell. I think some of these guys started believing their own act. A lot of things went right for the Pats in 01 but since then, they've been so absurdly dominant that things had to break bad for them to only win 4 more.

where I was last at
Francesa's take going in was that win or lose, this game would have no impact on how Brady's legacy is viewed. Whether he was 4-3 or 5-2, no difference.

I thought that was bullshit, as Francesa does not want to get close to the argument that Brady is GOAT.

I expected that if the Pats/Brady faltered and lost, Francesa would go after Brady in his passive-aggressive way, and eliminate him from the GOAT discussion

I expect him to somehow address this in context of Brady's historic 2nd half/OT performance.
