The Milwaukee Bucks still haven't come out to the court for Game 6 with the Orlando Magic and there's been some discussion within the Bucks about a boycott, sources tell @malika_andrews and me. NBA officials have gone into the Milwaukee locker room

The Bucks could say "we forfeit Game 5". That would get eyeballs.

Then come out and waste the Magic in Game 6.

I wonder if they award the Magic the win. That would make a more powerful statement than simply disrupting the NBA TV schedule.

So...did the Magic do the same? Or are they just leaving the court with a forfeited W?

Too bad it's an NBATV game and not on a real network, would get more attention on ESPN or TNT. Good on them for doing it though.

I have to think that every game today and tomorrow is at risk of this happening. Now that the Bucks have made this sacrifice, how can other teams agree to play?
Because if every team does it, the NBA simply makes up the games and there's no change to anything. If the Bucks do it and the Magic are awarded a win, then it becomes a story.

I’d be impressed if the Celts did the same tomorrow.
They kind of have to now don't they? Not even from the perspective of solidarity, just from a scheduling side, how can you start game 1 of the 2nd round before a game 5 of the other 1st round series is even done. You could theoretically have one series end up 3 games ahead of the other.

edit: I'm assuming the nba doesn't just call this game a forfeit and they reschedule

I agree with your point but if they all simply don't play - its still a huge story. This is historic.

Right. Then it is a sacrifice. Otherwise, it’s just a delay.
I think some of the players are arguing that a delay inconvenience the owners. The owners then get on the phone and bug their political connections to get shit done like they do for stadium tax breaks. I’m not sure I buy it working quite like that, but I think a delay or cancellation also carries an impact.

Probably sets a strong precedent for not only other NBA games, but all athletes/teams competing in American sports right now.

Only until they play again. In today's world things are ephemeral. Do they want a news story for a day until actual games are played, or do they want something meaningful, something always in the record books--a loss due to a protest?

The slogans on the jerseys were a story for like, 3 days, then nothing.

I highly doubt it’s a forfeit simply because I doubt the magic would want to accept that win. It makes a statement regardless of whether it’s a forfeit or a delay

The players should ask TNT and ESPN for time to express their views unfiltered to the American people

I mean, that’s kinda media in general though? It would be truly historic if the players cancelled the season... but it would also be out of the news by Friday and everyone would be focused on the NFL.

Yes. So what is this going to accomplish?

My point is that a sacrifice by one team--something that really truly effects them--will, I think, do more than, say, 2 days of no games.

Others can disagree, and we will see how it plays out.

Don’t strongly disagree with you at all. I’m not sure what the right answer is for any of this.

I don't read this as a mechanism to gain publicity to promote awareness but instead to apply pressure to advertisers and corporations that would be impacted by loss of ad revenue / viewership to use their clout to bring about actual change. Boycotting a single game as a statement is probably not going to do it, but all games for two days? A week? The rest of the playoffs? That has to amount to something, right?

Yes. I would love to see something like this, over and over again. I know we don't "get" things until we have personally experienced them, but hearing about other's experiences' multiple times would have to move the needle somewhat.

Cut one ad per commercial break and insert a player testimonial on what it means to be a black man in America.

The players should leverage the power they have and use TV to reach millions of people and voice their righful anger.

They see what's happening in the streets and hear the barely coded racist messaging coming from the RNC.

Basketball is irrevevant.

Its about dignity and decency and civil rights that they see and experieince as being denied.

I said in a different thread I think zero way the NBA lets it be a forfeit unless perhaps Bucks say they want that. Other teams aren't going to do anything but back the Bucks players and cannot imagine NBA is dumb enough to be on the wrong side of their entire player group.

I'd really prefer to play the Magic. I agree with DJ that a forfeit means more than rescheduled games. I wish the Magic would take and accept 3 forfeited games, because the Bucks can afford to forfeit 2 of them. I think the players can do more by playing and getting voices out by grabbing the microphone before the game and stuff. This way they will been seen as entitled by much of the white fans.

I wish the NFL players would pick up some of this work that the NBA is doing. But they have worse leadership both at the player and front office level.

I think the moment is a bit bigger than "I'd really prefer to play the Magic"

They are so upset... they are taking the night off?

Maybe - suspend the playoffs, entirely? Go to Kinosha? Really do something.

That's gonna happen by a certain segment no matter what. Racists whine when athletes kneel and then play and they'll whine now. Worrying about that will get you exactly nowhere.

I'm not sure how you come up with that first take. This is their form of doing something, on a national spot like they basically refuse to do their job that's a protest that's a picket whatever you want to call it That's a step towards change. I'm sorry you don't see it that way, sorry you feel that they're just taking a night off. But I'd have to say that's off base.

I don't know your background but as someone who isn't part of the aggrieved class, I am choosing to let those people decide how they want to make statements. They don't need my help or anyone else's in terms of defining the problem or the response.

I tell myself not to read the comments and then I read the comments and it profoundly ruins the rest of my day.

They are basically "shut up and entertain me, black man."
It’s gross, but it really drives home how important it is to speak up in support, and have our voices drown out those idiots.
