Seems like a good time to get another year’s minor league thread going as the Pawsox open up this Tuesday and the others this Friday I believe. Should be fun following the system again as Chaim has done a great job stacking talent. Lots of players I’m excited to watch this year starting with Casas, Mayer and Yorke of course, but Bello, Blaze Jordan, Groome, Bleis, Wong (finished big in Worcester), Walter, Ronaldo Hernandez, and on an on – the list of personal binkies should be long this year. Ryan Fitzgerald or Koss anyone after some spring training success? And can’t wait to see Mata back on the field at some point. Gilberto Jimenez, I dunno - will he develop multi-dimensional enough? Also seems like a make or break year for Franchy after some great moments in AAA last year and spring training - he’ll be 28 in September!

David Hamilton came over in the Hunter Renfroe trade. Making his debut for the Sea Dogs tonight. So far he’s 4-4 with a triple and two homers, one of which was a grand slam. It’s the 5th inning

Two hits and 3 ribbies for Mayer and a dinger for Blaze so far today hitting 3/4 in Salem. Those two are going to be SO MUCH FUN watching develop, especially hitting next to each other on the same team! It's not impossible that they might someday bat 3/4 for the big club.

RE: Duran, one report said Covid +, which would explain that.

For Mayer and Blaze, that whole roster is fun, as I wanted to see what Bonaci, Kavadas and W. Gonzalez have, and it looked like they have played in less than ideal conditions. If somehow Nathan Hickey becomes and average defensive catcher, the bat is enough to be legit.

Given the time it takes to really overhaul a system, it’s pretty exciting to look up and down the rosters and see the depth of prospects and see Chaim’s influence start to take hold.

Would be great to get to a place where we can regularly fill in with cheap contributors, trade from deep depth, and hit the occasional home run.

Still can’t believe we got Mayer at 4.

Brandon Walter went 5 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 BBs, 7 Ks in Portland's 6-2 loss to New Hampshire (runs allowed in the 7th and 8th by the bullpen). Kole Cottam went 1-4 with 2 RBI. David Hamilton (from the Brewers in the Renfroe-JBJ trade) went 1-3 with 2 BBs.
Red Sox Stats has video of Walter on Twitter. (I don't have an account, so can't post it here.)

Greenville falls 9-4 to Hudson Valley. Matthew Lugo (3-4, double, triple), Alex Binelas (2-4, HR, 2 rbi) and Joe Davis (1-4, HR, 2 rbi) led the offense. Lugo (8-14, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 5 Ks) and Binelas (5-11, 1 HR, 2 BBs, 3 Ks) are both off to hot starts on the season.

I'm starting to get excited that Lugo's offensive uptick at the end of last season might be real.

Is Hickey a guy who will benefit from the mythical robo umpires?

Big night down on the farm, as all four affiliates win.

WooSox win 8-3 over Lehigh Valley. Thomas Pannone, born in Cranston RI (and sharing my birthday, 29 years later), went 5 with 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, and 7 K. Eduard Bazardo gave up a 2-run lead in the 6th but vultured the W when the Wooers put up a 4-spot in the bottom half of the inning and a pair of insurance runs in the 7th. Casas went 1-3 with the mammoth homer seen above, 2 BBs and 2 Ks. Fitzgerald went deep, his 4th, in a 1-3 effort. Yolmer Sanchez went 3-3 with a double and a dong, and Refsnyder went 2-4. Franchy, who had been flying high in the first series, came back to earth with an 0-4 with 3Ks.

SeaDogs win 7-1 over Harrisburg on the road. Brayan Bello went 5 scoreless, giving up 4 H, 0 BBs and with an eye-opening 10 Ks. David Hamilton, acquired from Milwaukee in the Renfroe-JBJ trade, stayed hot, going 2-4 with a walk, 2 runs, 2 ribs and 3 stolen bases. Tyler "there is no such thing as Fight Club" Dearden went 3-5 with a triple, Christian Koss was 2-5 with 2 rbi, and Nick Sogard 2-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. The SeaDogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and cruised behind Bello and four relievers.

The Greenville Drive blanked Asheville on the road, 11-0. The theme for the day seems to be strong starting pitching. Yusniel Padron-Artiles went six innings, giving up just 3 hits, no walks, and striking out eight. Casey Cobb (2 IP, 1 H, 3 K) and Cody Scroggins (1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K) completed the shutout. Every hitter 1-8 in the line-up got a hit and every hitter scored a run. Nick Yorke went 1-5 with a double. Ceddanne Rafaela went 2-4 with a double and 2 runs. Tyler Esplin was 2-5 with 2 doubles, Gilberto Jimenez 2-5 with a homer (1) and a stolen base. Alex Binelas, also acquired in the Renfroe-JBJ trade, went 1-4 with his 2nd homer of the season.

Salem Red Sox outlasted the home team Fayetteville Woodpeckers 11-7 in 11 innings. Juan Daniel Encarnacion started and went 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, including a home run, with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Marcelo Mayer went 3-6 with the double seen above, 1 run and 2 ribs. Niko Kavadas was 2-5 with a double and the homer seen above. Nathan Hickey was 1-3 with 3 walks and the big blow of the game, a grand slam in the 11th.

Thank you for that report!
So the starting pitchers at our top 3 levels totaled 16 IP, 0 runs allowed, zero walks, and 25 Ks. Not too bad. :D

Local news talked about a humongous Casas HR (477 ft) yesterday. Tonight's game now on NESN; Casas flied out.
P.S. Surprised to see Fitzy playing 2nd. I thought he was an OFer.

Two more great starts down on the farm tonight.

In Worcester, Connor Seabold (#14 Sox Prospects) went 5 scoreless, giving up 1 hit, 1 BB and striking out two. WooSox won 7-3 with Tristan Casas (#1 SP) (2-4, HR, 3 rbi) leading the offense. Of note, his homer came off former #1 overall pick Mark Appell.

In Harrisburg, SeaDogs starter Jay Groome (#6 SP) threw five scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, no walks, and striking out four. Despite Groome's start, Portland lost 3-2. Christian Koss (#22 SP, 2-5), Kole Cottam (#59 SP, 2-4) and Wil Dalton (2-4 with a double) accounted for all six Portland hits.

In Asheville, the Greenville Drive didn't need great pitching as they bludgeoned the Tourists, 17-3. The Drive tallied 20 knocks, with the top eight batters in the line-up all ticking the hit column; the #9 hitter reached base twice with a walk and a hit by a pitch. Nick Yorke (#3 SP) led the hit parade, going 5-6 with 4 rbis. Ceddanne Rafaela (#19 SP) went 4-6 with two doubles. Alex Binelas (#21 SP) was 1-3 with a homer (3) and 2 walks. Gilberto Jimenez (#18) was 2-6 with a double. Tyler McDonough (#17 SP, 3rd round 2021) was 2-6 with 2 doubles, 3 runs and 3 ribs. Ryan Zeferjohn (3rd round 2019) picked up the W with 3 scoreless innings of middle relief, giving up 1 hit and no walks with two strikeouts.

In Fayetteville NC, the Salem Red Sox lost a back and forth game, 7-6, their first loss of the season. The SaleSox drew a whopping 11 walks, but only scratched out four hits in falling to the Woodpeckers. Eddinson Paulino (#23 SP) managed the only extra-base hit, a triple, going 1-4. with a walk. Marcelo Mayer (#2 SP) was 0-3 with two walks, Blaze Jordan (#10 SP) was 1-5 and one of only two SaleSox to not draw a walk, Brainer Bonaci #25 SP) was 1-4 with a walk.

The two prospects the Red Sox acquired for Renfroe: Alex Binelas 7-for-18 (.389), .520 OBP, 8 RBIs, 8 runs, 5 BB, 3 Ks, 2 steals (High-A Greenville). David Hamilton 7-for-14 (.500), .611 OBP, 2 homers, 1 triple, 5 runs, 9 RBIs, 4 BB, 2 Ks. 7-for-7 steals (Double-A Portland)
Eric Van likes this.

I’ll be watching Binelas like a hawk this season. That trade will look better and better if he’s able to get promoted this year.

Nice update. I’ve been briefly looking to see if they had Seabolds velocity anywhere. If he’s consistent in the low 90s reaching the mid, he’s interesting. If he’s touching low 90s, less so.

So, is it like, OK to get really excited about like, everybody? Seems like everyone other than Jeter Downs is off to an unbelievable start.

To echo others who have said similar, it is incredible to watch Bloom's work pay off. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.

Wilkelman Gonzalez joins the party for Salem:

5ip 1h 9k 3bb 0r

He’s 20, and was a $250k bonus signing in 2018.

Frank German, the Yankees ‘18 4th rounder who came over with Ottavino, finished off the win for Portland with 4 strikeouts over 2 innings without allowing a base runner save the fake one in the 10th.. High-velo relief prospect.

9 more runs and 14 hits for Greenville tonight. They're averaging 9 runs a game for the young season! Shades of the 2007 Lancaster JetHawks offensive juggernaut - and without the high desert air to help

It was another clean sweep down on the farm tonight with Portland, Greenville and Salem all winning and Worcester rained out.

In Harrisburg, the SeaDogs won 4-3 in 10. Chris Murphy (#15 Sox Prospects) turned in a solid five inning performance, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits with 6 Ks and no walks. Four relievers pitched five clean innings to secure the W, with Frank German (#35 SP) going the 9th and 10th to pick up the win, allowing just one unearned run when the extra innings zombie runner scored on two groundouts. Christian Koss (#22 SP) went 1-4 with an rbi groundout and an rbi single in the 10th to plate the deciding run. Nick Sogard was 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and an rbi single in the 10th to put the Dogs ahead. Kole Cottam (#59 SP) was 1-4; his rbi single in the 6th tied the game at 2-2.

In Asheville NC, the Drive came from behind to win 9-6. Starting pitcher Brian Van Belle gave up 6 runs (4 earned) over 5 innings. All six runs came on long balls, with Van Belle serving up a solo homer in the 1st, a two-run shot in the 2nd, and a 3-run Johnson in the 5th. The Drive had just tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the 5th before the Asheville home run made it 6-3. Tyler McDonough (#17 SP, 2021 3rd round pick out of NC State) began the season 0-13, but started finding his stroke yesterday with two doubles in 6 trips to the plate. Tonight he accounted for the Drive's first three runs with a solo homer in the 3rd and a 2-run double in the 5th; he knocked in the go-ahead run in the 8th with a bases loaded fielders choice. As noted above, the Drive knocked a total of 14 hits. Of note, Ceddanne Rafaela (#19 SP) was 2-5 with a double, Nick Yorke (#3 SP) was 1-5, Alex Binelas (#21 SP) was 2-4 with a double and a walk, and Gilberto Jimenez (#18 SP) was 1-5 with a double. Jacinto Arredondo threw three scoreless innings (no hits, 3 walks, no Ks) in relief of Van Belle to get the win, and Ryan Fernandez pitched a scoreless 9th to get the save.

In Fayetteville NC, Winkleman Gonzalez led the Salem Red Sox to a 9-4 win. Winkie gave up just one hit and no runs over 5 innings, with 9 strikeouts against 3 walks. The SaleSox offense stalked Winkie to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd, then tacked on three runs in the 6th and 7th with the help of two Woodpecker errors and two hit batsmen. The Woodpeckers got one run back in the 8th before the SaleSox broke the game open with 4 runs in the 9th. Eddinson Paulino (#23 SP) was 0-5 with a walk, Marcelo Mayer (#2 SP) 1-3 with a double and two walks, Bl;aze Jordan 1-4 with a double and hit by pitch, and Nathan Hickey (#30) 2-4 with a sac fly.

The joys of SSS- coming into tonight, Salem OF Miguel Ugueto had 5 total bases in 21 AB. Tonight he had 5 in 5 AB (based on boxscore browsing).

I'll be at the WooSox tomorrow. Downs had a decent day today...hopefully he can keep that up.

Friday 4/15 on the farm, Sox teams went 3-2.

WooSox (8-2) split a doubleheader (both games 7 innings) with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (Phillies), losing the first game 3-7 and taking the second 7-5. In the first game, the Wooers crept out to a 3-0 lead through 4 innings, scoring single runs in the 1st, 2nd and 4th. Starter Josh "JWinky" Winckowski (#12 Sox Prospects, not to be confused with "WilkyG" - Wilkelman Gonzalez of the Salem Red Sox, #11 SP) gave up just a single (wiped out by a caught stealing) and a walk through 4, but gave up 2 runs on two singles and two walks in the 5th. He came back out to start the 6th and the one batter he faced reached on an error by 2B Yolmer Sanchez. Durbin Feltman (#45 SP) came in and provided no relief, giving up a 2-run homer and the lead to the first batter he faced. Feltman stayed in for the 7th and gave up 3 more runs on a pair of doubles, another Sanchez error and a wild pitch. Ryan "Fitzy" Fitzgerald (#24 SP) went 2-4 with an rbi single in the 2nd and an rbi triple in the 4th. Jeter "Jet" Downs (#13 SP) was 1-4 with a solo homer in the 1st. Sanchez was 2-3 with a double and scored ahead of both Fitzy hits. Christin Stewart was 2-3 with a double and a walk, and Grant Williams was 2-3.
In the second game, the Wooies jumped out to a 6-0 lead, batting around in the 1st inning. Fitzy struck out to lead off before Jet beat out an infield single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch ahead of a walk to Tristan Casas (#1 SP). Rob Refsnyder hit a sac fly to score Jet, and with two outs and a runner on first the inning seemed to calm down for Iron Pigs starter Hans Crouse. Instead of getting out of the inning, the bottom fell out for Crouse. Franchy Cordero doubled and Stewart walked to load the bases and that was it for Crouse. Joe Gatto came in and was met by a bases clearing double by Ronaldo Hernandez (#28 SP) and a two-run homer by Roberto Ramos before getting Grant Williams to ground out to end the inning. In the third, Refsnyder and Franchy doubles added the Wooers' seventh run. In a true bullpen game, the Wooers threw six pitchers with varying degrees of effectiveness over the 7 innings of play. Eduard "Eduardo" Bazardo (#34 SP) got the win with one and a third innings of scoreless relief of starter Brian Keller.

In Wootown, winds are blowing straight out at 15-20 mph. Hopefully the game will get in, but the forecast (and me being here) makes it seem 50/50
