Eagles send a 3rd and 2 7’s for a 5th and Jahan Dotson.

Pretty good value there.
I remember thinking Dotson (16th) and Pickett (20th) were both drafted way too high by their respective teams. Eagles got both for a 3rd and a pair of 7ths. (They also got a 4th back for Pickett)

For which team?

I guess the Eagles could see him as another Agholor who has a mid-career stretch of being a good 3rd WR but.... man he appears to be terrible and it's pretty telling that the old staff got nothing out of him and the new staff looked at him and said "this guy is definitely not one of our 3 best WRs"

Flipping him to move up 50 or so picks into the top 100 (and getting some 7ths one of which they flipped for a kicker) seems like a nice little move for WAS.

I think they see themselves as a contender and don't want to enter the season with Parris Campbell, John Ross or Johnny Wilson as their #3 WR. (I completely forgot DeVante Parker retired)

They also have the 5th year option on Dotson if they need it.

Yeah, I get why they did it, they have 2 WRs then a bunch of guys who wouldn't make the Patriots likely, but that's a lot to pay for another Ross/Campbell level talent.

0-3 to 4-3
Fun fact - Dotson was drafted #16 in the 2022 draft, two picks ahead of the #18 that Philly traded for AJ Brown.

Philly needed a #3 WR. Not just for the slot, but for if/when Brown or Smith miss time. It’ll be interesting to see how Dotson does with good QB play, which he hadn’t had so far in his career.

How has Wilson been? Huge guy that made a lot of clutch plays for the Noles.

Out with a concussion for more than a week now. (Ross is out with a concussion too, which likely is another reason they made the move, their 3-7 WRs are garbage, and the only one with real upside is a raw 6th round rookie who is going to end up missing most of camp/pre-season by the looks of it.

I'm curious as to why you feel this way. Ross' career never really got off the ground and Campbell has had 1 good year statistically 2 years ago (And 91 targets). Both are pretty much hanging on this this point.

In 2 seasons, Dotson has shown that he can be a regular WR in this league and in a less-than-ideal situation. He missed 5 games his rookie year due to injury, as well.

Dotson has had incredible snap volume and fairly poor production, his other metrics line up with a lot of early round busts in terms of targets and production per route run. The big difference between him and Ross/Campbell is basically that he was given an enormous number of snaps on bad teams, where they didn't get the playing time or they were hurt. Bunch of guys in that tier, Agholor is at the top of it, bottom is probably Treadwell? He could break out, definitely not impossible, his rookie year wasn't that bad, but last year was terrible and he got outplayed in camp/preseason by JAGs it's not an awful gamble by the Eagles, but it's a high price to pay unless he breaks out significantly.

Eh, the 7's are whatever and based on the 2024 draft, they dropped 45 spots. I don't that is a very high price.

45-50 picks in that area is pretty big, I don't remember the exact #, but a top 100 pick is something like 4-5x more likely to be a successful NFL player than one in the 5th round. And that's if you use it, if you trade it a 3rd has a lot more value than a 5th.

It's not a wild overpay, but it's a lot for a WR of his caliber, you're betting pretty heavily on significant improvement (on less routes). I mean, he's a guy who was 78th among 80 qualifiers in YPRR last year, same for targets per route run, and he had the 10th highest drop percentage. Guys who don't get open much, and don't catch it much when they do.... shouldn't be very expensive. PHI probably thinks they can fix him, and he has some highlights that show why he was a high pick, but..... there are an awful lot of guys who were highly drafted, most who are bad without serious injury and with a lot of playing time stay bad.

Thank you for these responses. Something seemed off about why he was available.

Well, it's pretty clear what motivational tactic Pederson is using to get Mac's buy-in. Nice of him to not mention that his "Patriot Ways" are all over his tape from Alabama.
Those ways will soon be his Jaguars Ways and wherever else he goes. Playing against vanilla defenses in the preseason is not such a good predictor. Nice dig though Dougie.

Seems eerily similar to this line:

36-52, 388 yards, 1 TD, 0 Int, 5 sacks

Mac Jones stats in his first preseason in 2021

Grabbing a few bits from this page tracking cuts:
  • The Tennessee Titans have released 2021 first-round pick Caleb Farley, according to ESPN. Still just 25, the former Virginia Tech cornerback has appeared in just 12 NFL games up to this point due to injuries.
  • The Houston Texans are releasing veteran receiver Noah Brown, according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz. Brown had 33 catches for 567 yards and two touchdowns last season.
  • Carl Lawson, the former Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets pass rusher who signed with the Dallas Cowboys late in the preseason, is being released, per ESPN. There's a chance he'll return to Dallas' practice squad as emergency pass rushing depth.
  • The Minnesota Vikings are moving on from 2021 fourth-round pick Kene Nwangwu, who has seen time at RB and kick returner in recent years, per NFL Media. He'll be released if he can't be traded.
  • An under-the-radar name to watch: TE E.J. Jenkins, just waived by the Philadelphia Eagles, per NFL Media. At 6-7, the former undrafted Georgia Tech product is coming off a strong preseason and should draw looks elsewhere, if he doesn't return to the Eagles' practice squad.
  • The Broncos are hoping to trade wideout Tim Patrick and running back Samaje Perine, but will release both players they are unable to facilitate trades, according to Broncos insider Mike Klis. Patrick has had a productive summer after injuries hampered him the previous two years. The Broncos are reportedly keeping tabs on Perine, who was a key player on the Bengals offense before going to Denver in free agency back in 2023.
  • The New York Giants are releasing veteran fullback Jakob Johnson, according to ESPN.
  • The New York Giants are releasing veteran receiver Allen Robinson, per NFL Media.
  • Per NFL Media, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released veteran receiver Sterling Shepard. While he has not made the 53-man roster, the Bucs are reportedly holding a spot for him on the practice squad if he doesn't sign with another team's active roster.

Alex Leatherwood cut again.

Man has there ever been an O-lineman bust this bad in the top 20? Couldn't even kick inside to guard, lasted like 1 year.

Minnechaug and Holy Cross grad, Benton Whitley made the final cut for the Giants.

Malik Nabers to wear first jersey number ever retired in pro Football.

New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers will wear the No. 1 jersey in his rookie NFL campaign, becoming the first Giants player to wear the number since 1935.

No. 1 was last worn by Ray Flaherty 89 years ago and was taken out of circulation after he retired from the NFL, becoming the first jersey number to be retired in professional football.
