Yea but JD can’t even field a position. Manny and Bryce can at least field. Also, Harper last year had a better year than JD has ever had. Two MVP like seasons from Harper for his mid 20s/early 30s is much more palatable. Harper is a generational player

Harper is the kind of once-in-a-generational player you can build a team around and is still so young he will continue to play at an all-star caliber level for another 10 years. Even teams who traditionally do not spend on big free agents may be willing to open their purses for him.

The competition for him will be fierce and he'll get the most ridiculous contract you've ever seen, in the same way A-Rod did in 2002.

This seems like #Braves get out of long money on Kemp in exchange for adding payroll for '18 on expiring deals for Gonzalez, Kazmir, McCarthy. #Dodgers have horizon to win now, spend $ now to win. Atl a year away will have better situation, plus Atl opens OF spot now for Acuna

If healthy Kazmir/McCarthy can provide cover time for #Braves to continue to develop young SP, and then be potential trade bait in July/Aug. #Dodgers

Sources: Trade is effectively cash-neutral overall, but will get #Dodgers under $197M luxury-tax threshold for 2018. Kemp’s money spread out over two years. Three players #Braves getting all one-year guys. ATL will designate Gonzalez for assignment, enabling him to be free agent.

From #Dodgers’ perspective, no harm to 2018 team and ability to re-set tax rate to minimum for great free-agent class of ‘18-‘19.

Makes sense to me now after reading the money involved. Braves get out from under the Kemp deal for 2019 in exchange for an uptick in payroll this year in a rebuilding year. Dodgers get under the tax and have room in next year's FA frenzy to either re-sign Kershaw or go after Harper/Machado.

Looks like Kemp may be again on the move. Rosenthal says he's going to get either traded or released.

If they release him, could the Braves sign him (with the Dodgers paying the bulk) without MLB taking a look at the sequence of events?

This enables the annual Kemp to the Sox rumors to begin. He's the big middle of the order bat we need!

Seriously, though, this is like an NBA trade with overpriced contracts being exchanged

With all the physical issues he's had, Kemp could actually experience a revival as a DH at this stage in his career.

I definitely see an A.L. team taking a chance on him in that role.

Maybe a bench guy vs. lefties, but his bat has been below average even for an outfielder for the last three years and doesn't hold up well enough for any full time role.

O's closer Zach Britton ruptures Achilles, out at least 6 months.

Britton will be a cheap pickup at the deadline. 2nd year in a row where he's missing significant chunks of the year.

Edit: Per MLBtr
MLBTR projected that Britton would command $12.2MM in his final trip through the arbitration process. While it’s too late for the O’s to pull back their decision to tender him a contract, the club could end up releasing Britton to avoid paying him the full contract value. So long as he’s released before the 16th day of Spring Training, the O’s can avoid all but thirty days worth of salary.

Next 3-4 years are going to be incredibly top heavy in AL East. If Rays, Jays and O’s all rebuild, probably makes Sox and Yanks push 100 wins.

Not sure the rationale from the Giants’ perspective given they already have Sandoval. Does this mean they’ll try out Longoria at 1st and move Belt for an arm? Sarcasm

Wow. Didn't see that one coming. Can't believe they traded Longoria.
He's on the downswing. 96 wRC+ and his walk rate drop appears to be permanent, so those OBPs aren't coming back up, I don't think. He's also swinging a lot more than he used to, especially out of the zone. And his soft contact rate is up the last two years.

I think he's headed toward being toast and wouldn't be surprised if he's out of the sport in 3 or 4 years.

Worth noting that Longoria was about two weeks from hitting his 10-5 rights and he, like Votto in Cincinnati, was set on staying and finishing his career in one city. So for the Rays, it was now or never as far as moving him.

Denard Span had a higher OPS than him last year.

From what I read, Longoria would have hit his 10/5 rights in the second week of April. Not two weeks from now.

I'm pretty sure the chunky mammal will be jettisoned or become a bench player as he is only being paid the league minimum by the Giants.
