MLB moving ASG out of Atlanta

Pennsylvania is lobbying hard for this game fwiw.

I hate to say it, but we've been so laggy in getting people vaccinated, and that should weigh heavily in where MLB decides to put the game since that will impact how many people can attend. So I'm not hopeful it winds up here. (In Philly, at least, because we're apparently even behind the rest of the state.)

PA is rapidly increasing and becoming one of the better states. In 3 weeks the supply will skyrocket.

You’re on the clock Roger. No more Super Bowls for Atlanta unless/until the law is repealed.
By a cursory check I don’t think the Final Four, the Super Bowl, the CFB championship, or any golf major except the obvious is scheduled in Georgia at this time.

Their new stadium has got to be in the future rotation at some point for the first 3 events, though. Preemptively refusing to even consider them unless they repeal the law sends the same message as a cancellation, IMO.

The cradle of the game.
Too bad they can't move the Masters.
The timing is such that The Masters will likely be spared much scrutiny in the wake of MLB's decision. Just not enough time to even consider alternative sites. But in reality, they'd just explain Augusta is The Masters and vice versa, and try to fly over the weather. Not that any of this makes it right.

Also, Obama applauds MLB's decision, while the orange one is calling for a boycott.

Guess he's not going to make that first pitch in Yankee Stadium this year?

I'll echo the sentiment in here: I'm glad MLB did this. I respect the perspective that boycotting Georgia is only going to exacerbate problems for the people being targeted by these laws. But a major American organization pulling out a high-profile event is the kind of pressure that might actually move a needle or two.

Even with different timing and all the pressure in the world, The Masters would never go anywhere. Augusta National owns the tournament. Unless the course was swallowed up by a giant sinkhole, they'd never play the tournament somewhere else. And even then, I imagine they'd just stop holding the tournament.

Imagine the number of holes in one by the field!

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, in response to MLB's decision to move the All-Star Game from Georgia, says: "I will not participate in an event held by MLB, and the state will not seek to host the All-Star Game or any other MLB special events."

They dont seem to be taking this well

The extreme leftist view of this board, personal attacks, and vehement opposition to inclusive, open dialogue on any issues from perspectives outside of the present majority have made SOSH intolerable.

No one is forcing you to stay.

If you want to help, please use the “report post” function to bring personal attacks to the moderation team’s attention. If you have broader concerns about culture or moderation on SoSH, they belong in the Backwash forum, not here in the MLB forum.

I trust this will be the last word in this thread on this tangent.

Inbox: Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Josh Hawley are planning to announce legislation today "to end MLB's special immunity from antitrust laws" after their decision to relocate the All-Star game over Georgia's voting law.
Is there even a pretense of causal relationship between moving the game and the antitrust exemption? Or is just out and open revenge legislation? I mean, I know it is, but is there even a fig leaf here or are they just done hiding behind fig leaves?

Another related question is what happens it any of the Atlanta teams make the playoffs? Does the NBA force the Hawks to play all road games? The Braves have a good chance to win the NL East this year. Wil they be forced to play "home games" on the road? The reason I ask is because the playoffs is when the teams make their real money. I know it's a longshot but it would be strange to see the Hawks in the NBA Finals playing all on the road .

This is not going to happen. It's fucking nonsensical.

When Cruz and Hawley get together terrible things happen. No idea where this goes but this is a huge can of worms on a lot of levels.
Would be funny if the someone uses the Hobby Lobby case law against them.

That would be amazing. The antitrust exemption is bad policy anyway. Maybe if the Braves are renamed, they'll get really pissed and introduce legislation to end Daylight Saving Time.

I’m 100% on board with them getting rid of the antitrust exemption. Getting rid of it this way leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I’ll allow it.

My understanding (from a few years ago, so maybe I misremember pieces, or something has changed [which it may well have with Covid-19 adjustments to the deal between players and teams]) is that the players own the gate for the playoffs in lieu of receiving salary - to the point where team execs need to buy a ticket to even go to their office during playoff games if there’s a view of the field (they do, of course without complaint because if you’re an MLB exec with a field view office, you’re doing pretty good)...but the team gets their appropriate share of TV and the per cap/F&B revenue.

I have a friend I hadn't seen in a while until yesterday. He is a fervent RS fan actually named after Ted Williams. He is boycotting the RS and MLB because of the ATL AS Game move. It's pretty unbelieveable how far some people have been sucked into the Trump, Q, stolen election abyss. He's a smart gut but I think he has lost his mind. It's very sad to me. I feel like I should do an intervention. He is so angry and dismissive of any alternative view. When you see it in real life from an otherwise funny and engaging person, it's quite jarring.
