Eh, I thought the Indians won that trade. They gave up a pitcher who's putting up an ERA that's nearly as bad as Lackey in '11 who they're not going to offer the QO to and not getting a pick for. They have someone else, pitching better, ready to fill the spot in the rotation and continue to challenge for a playoff spot. They also got a first round pick who is hitting very well this year at AA.

Your right, stats this season do not lie. Overall he's only 29 and has averaged 34 starts last 5 years. Last season close to a K per IP. Cards have a handful of SP pitching prospects they could have gone after.
Indians already have a few top OF prospects in the system. You would have thought SP would be a priority especially dealing a decent SP.

He also pulled a Dempster, forfeiting the remaining $1M on his contract. Good for him.

MLB Networks Deadline Day Special just reported that David Price will be traded by 4pm. Not might... will.

Take it with a grain of salt, but that would be a huge deal if it happened.

The Seattle Mariners have acquired outfielder Chris Denorfia from the San Diego Padres, making the move less than two hours before Thursday’s 1 p.m. Pacific non-waiver trade deadline.
In the deal, the M’s sent minor-league outfielder Abaraham Almonte and minor-league pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen to the Padres, the Mariners confirmed.

Phillies (obviously) completely dropping the ball again and again. But considering Lee would not have made that start today if a trade was on the cards, at least some other team didn't get shafted by trading for him then having his elbow go in the first start (assuming the injury is as bad as it seems likely to be).

In a surprising move, the Marlins designated RHP Jacob Turner for assignment.  Turner is only 23 years old, is a former top prospect, and although he has an ERA close to 6 this year, he is not even arbitration-eligible until 2016. There has to be more to this story.  link

The Tigers signed embattled RHP Jim Johnson to a minor league deal. link

The Orioles signed LHP Joe Saunders to a minor league deal.  LHP Clay Rapada was released to make room for Saunders. link

Anyone interested in a Dodgers outfielder?  Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford, and Andre Ethier have all cleared waivers.  Beckett also reportedly cleared waivers, but Hanley Ramirez was claimed. link

The Mets designated OF Bobby Abreu for assignment and called up Kirk Nieuwenhuis. link  (Personally, I had no idea they had even signed Abreu.)

The Nationals claimed Yankees LHP Matt Thornton off revocable waivers.  The two clubs have 2 days to work out a deal, or the Yankees can pull him back. link

And in potentially big news, Tony Bosch and 9 others were arrested this morning in Florida by the DEA.  link
T.J. Quinn, a reporter who is all over this story, reports that "Two law enforcement sources tell me investigation revealed previously unnamed MLB players. Names will be revealed. Expect more suspensions." link

The Padres made a decision about their GM position, hiring Rangers' Assistant GM A.J. Preller. link

The Rockies designated OF Jason Pridie for assignment. link
Chugging Chone Figgins was DFA by the Dodgers after his window for a rehab assignment expired. link
The Cubs designated Nate Schierholtz for assignment to clear a roster spot for Kyuji Fujikawa. link
The Yankees released LHP Jeff Francis. link

Cole Hamels and Marlon Byrd were claimed on waivers, while Jonathan Papelbon was not.

The Cubs claimed RHP Jacob Turner off revocable waivers, giving them 48 hours to work out a trade.  Turner was DFA anyway, so he would go back on waivers if they can't work anything out. link

The Athletics have claimed shortstop Yunel Escobar from the Rays on revocable waivers, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal tweets. That means the two teams will have until Tuesday afternoon to agree upon a trade, if they’re going to make one.

The Orioles have announced that they’ve acquired left-handed outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the White Sox for minor league pitchers Miguel Chalas and Mark Blackmar. It’s currently unclear whether the Orioles claimed De Aza on waivers or if he cleared.

RT @Buster_ESPN: The Oakland Athletics are closing in on a deal for Adam Dunn.
How did take until 2014 for Adam Dunn to be on the A's?

There's zero chance that's happening.  A's PAs at DH

143 - Alberto Callaspo
140 - John Jaso (DL)
69 - Yoenis Cespedes (traded)
52 - Coco Crisp (kind of needed in CF)
39 - Josh Donaldson
38 - Brandon Moss

Everyone else - 72

When Alberto Callaspo is your most frequent DH, you've got lots of ABs for Dunn in that spot.

I was making fun of knucklecup, I don't actually think Dunn will be playing LF for the A's.

Is Jonny Gomes better at defense than Adam Dunn?
According to FanGraphs, Dunn is about 20 runs per 150 games worse than Jonny Gomes. And that is comparing Dunn when he was a regular outfielder, half a decade ago to Gomes now. So, you should assume the gap is even larger now, as Dunn is both older and out of practice.

@Ken_Rosenthal: The Houston Chronicle is reporting that the #Astros have fired manager Bo Porter.

This had been boiling for reasons beyond the W/L. Helluva year for the Astros; rarely has a team been so simultaneously praised for organization innovation and mismanagement during the same season

Yeah I believe I saw a story, about a week or so ago, that said he was frustrated with the higher ups.

Just a strange year for the Astros.

Not sure what goes on behind closed doors in the clubhouse with Porter.  He comes across as a great guy in all the interviews and passionate about his job.  The bulk of the W/L issues lie with the Front Office and their "strategy".  They are fielding a team of AAA and guys with hanging on to a MLB contract.  What are you gonna do as a manager? Definitely frustrating for Porter and he called out the GM on it.

Definitely a strange year for the Astors.

We've been over this before, but as others have already stated… yes.  And it's not even remotely close. I get the sense you haven't seen Adam Dunn play baseball in a long, long time.  If Billy Beane had David Ortiz, he wouldn't be trading for Adam Dunn.  You guys are definitely not on the same page.

No surprise on the Porter firing.  Even ignoring whatever behind the scenes clubhouse issues there were, he was totally overmatched as an in-game manager.
