MLB Player Contracts are Non-Linear

We are going to eventually look further into both questionable and successful MLB contracts, with particular focus paid to the Red Sox.  Especially in recent years, free agent contracts have been a source of great debate, with the most obvious and recent (Ramirez, Sandoval) coming under Cherington's purview and some other questionable contracts (Renteria and... ack, Lugo) on Theo's watch.  
 
Feel free to suggest some others in this thread.  All examples, Sox and non-Sox are more than welcome.
