Not sure how long he'll be out for, but this really sucks in a season already filled with disappointment.

EDIT: Sprained, not strained. Could a mod updated the title for me?

He also took himself out of the game, he wasn't pulled (which implies it was a managerial decision).

I think it would be wise to wait to see how he feels tomorrow before we get too upset or worked up for a JBJ return.

No concussion. That's such great news. Of course, now Farrell has no reason to call up JBJ, but whatever. The lack of concussion makes up for that in spades.

Kind of sums up the season.

The Sox have sprained their backs. Incredibly unlikely, but it happened.

Injury or no injury, I think bringing JBJ up (and sending Mookie down) should at least be considered.  Mookie's OBP is less than .3, way too low for a future leadoff guy, and something he can surely work on in Pawtucket. Meanwhile, JBJ is having an excellent year in AAA.  Mookie's an outstanding talent and may work through this in the bigs, but more seasoning should at least be on the table

Mookie's hit into really bad luck all season (BABIP) but his LD% is fine. I don't know how you work on hitting them where they ain't, in the minors or the majors.

I'd rather see Betts on the DL for a few weeks to give him some rest.  Back injuries aren't going to heal up completely in just a couple of days.  Let's see what JBJ can do for the next 15 days instead of making Betts go out there at less than 100%.

Agree. Even at 22, Mookie is going to need time for his body to recover after that impact. The season's going nowhere, so there's nothing to lose by giving him two weeks to let his ears stop ringing.

The whiplash effect on his neck was likely unpleasant this morning when Betts got out of bed.

It's bad enough on first watch but seeing that clip a couple of times shows just how violent a collision that was. Wouldn't be surprised if they end up calling this whiplash. His head goes slightly back on impact and then forward crashing into the top of that rail as his body follows twisting and contorting as he falls to the ground. Amazing that he got up from that.

Edited...
Looks like Harry and I were thinking along the same line just minutes apart.

Mookie has been one of their very best player. He is not even close to a problem.

Yup, sending him down would be silly.  Mookie has been fine (one of our better players actually), and even a cursory look deeper at the stats shows he has been quite unlucky this year. BABIP will normalize, especially considering he is hitting the ball hard. To just pick out one more stat, 31 Ks and 21 BBs for a young guy does not scream "overmatched".  Right in line with his 2014 when he had  33Ks and 20 BBs.

I would be on board with somehow figuring out a way for JBJ to get into the mix at the major league level, especially with the way the season looks to be heading.  He should only come up if he is getting semi-regular playing time though.  I think that's doable if they want to limit Hanley's time in the OF, limit Ortiz against LHP, and give Holt more corner IF time, all of which seem reasonable to me.

Seems the "chalk it all up to bad luck" card gets played quite a bit these days. Regardless, outside a decent May the #'s are pretty disappointing, with Betts hitting at a .182/.250/.333 clip for June. There realistically has to be at least some sending him down consideration there imo.

At the very least, not sure trotting him out there with a nagging back is worth passing over the potential silver lining chance to give Bradley a legitimate 2 week run at it.

What does that even mean? Either there are valid reasons for thinking that bad luck has played a significant role in making Mookie's numbers look as mediocre as they do,, or there aren't. If there are, then the Sox should not handle him the way they would handle a guy who was legitimately struggling at the plate. It's pretty straightforward logic. It's not a question of "playing a card."

It means that if you look at just his May line while coming to the conclusion that bad luck is the real culprit here, in regards to any determination on whether he's actually beyond demotion consideration, i'd be more willing to get behind that.

Applying a bad luck factor to essentially excuse the entire season as a whole thus far strikes me as a rather broad stroke though.

The entire season sample we have so far is already short enough.  Is there some reason we should be breaking it up into smaller slices to analyze Mookie?  Players have good and bad weeks, good and bad months.  All of them.  This alone is not a good reason to consider demoting someone.

A pretty simple analysis of BABIP and LD% (plus the eye test of someone who has watched the games) I think tells that Mookie has had at least worse than average luck his year.  It's entirely fair to consider that when thinking about how he has played instead of looking at his stat line in a vacuum.

I don't think saying Mookie has been fine so far (and in no way should be considered for demotion) is any kind of inappropriate "broad stroke".

I have no issue bringing JBJ to the majors, but Betts (barring a DL stint being required for the gruesome wall bashing he did) should NOT be sent down for any reason.  He's been a very good defensive CFer, and has hit the ball consistently hard, though in some rough luck.  If the Sox need to farm someone out for JBJ to get his shot, my money would be on Castillo going down.  The hole in his swing on the low inside pitch is common knowledge around the league, and teams are hammering him there.  He's swinging over the top of those pitches, or chopping them to 3b or ss.  HE needs to get his swing, which is a powerful thing, right.  That can be accomplished in AAA.
Talk of benching or farming out Betts so JBJ can take his place in the lineup is lunacy.  He's 22.  He'll be fine.

Doesn't seem like they're going to now, but it wouldn't have surprised me if they put him on the 7 day concussion DL.

Do you really want to play this card?

As for everyone else...unless it's specifically about Mookie Betts' injury or treatment, move along.
