Chris Mortensen, the longtime NFL reporter and analyst for ESPN, is temporarily stepping down from his ESPN assignments because of Stage IV throat cancer.

ESPN NFL Insiders host Suzy Kolber announced her colleague’s diagnosis on that program this afternoon. According to sources, Mortensen has been feeling sick for the past couple of months.

“More than a week ago, I was diagnosed with a Stage IV throat cancer,” Mortensen said in a statement on Friday. “My focus shifted significantly to gathering information about the specifics of this cancer. The initial diagnosis was confirmed Friday and there is another test remaining that will determine the best possible treatment plan that will commence in the very immediate future. Consequently, with the support and encouragement from ESPN president John Skipper and many others at ESPN, I am temporarily stepping away from my normal NFL coverage duties to better engage this opportunity to fight the good fight that is projected to affect almost 1.7 million Americans with new cases in 2016.

League sources are telling him it's nothing to worry about.

Good luck, Mort.

Hopefully throat cancer can be cured of Chris Mortensen.

Shank! Written back in September:
I worry for the Worldwide Leader and other media outlets/members who covered the coverup with a cynical eye. What’s going to happen to poor Bob Kravitz, Chris Mortensen, Don Van Natta, and my man, Gary Tanguay? Bill Polian? Lester Munson? Mark Brunell? Felgie? Mazz? Ben Volin? . . . (gulp) me?

In a few months we are likely to find out that he only had stage 1 cancer and this entire episode was much ado about nothing. Of course, Mort will be so invested in the story by then that he'll probably sabatoge his recovery so he can claim to have been proven right.

I love this thread unconditionally. The first few posters tried to take the high road...hilarious.

Because what a message board user says or thinks has any bearing on Mort whatsoever. Cancer is awful, but he brought the jokes on himself.
Shit, yo really? SOSH doesn't factor into his cancer treatment?

Mind blown.

I think the jokes are funny. This just adds to the Pats fans are thin skinned fans perception.

Not snarky, but does throat cancer really sneak up on you like that? Surprised it's stage 4 prior to treatments, though I suppose it's possible he has been getting them to no avail.

No CHOO CHOOOOOO from me on this one; he deserved public shaming, ridicule, and to be fired during the halftime show of the Superbowl, but cancer is a bit much. I guess the irony is that Twitter may soon be his primary form of communication, so he better learn how to use it real fast.

Always liked Mort. Hated the Deflategate episode (obviously) but overall his career was pretty solid until the last year or so. Head/neck cancers are awful. Wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Here's hoping for a cure.

Some of these were pretty funny, though.

As any other fan base would react if put in the exact same position. I really don't care what they think either.
There's a difference between sharing (some) well crafted attempts at morbid humor ... and being a complete fool about the possibility of a man having a terminal illness, just because you blame him for helping tarnish a meaningless thing like a sports team

You are demonstrating that you do not know that difference

Poor Mort. Oh poor poor Mort.

Seriously, he's a jerk. Mean people and great people get cancer. It happens and I'm sorry for him. But Mort sucks and so does cancer. I lament Rickman for his talent and Bowie for his brilliance, but I don't lament Mort, even if I do hope he gets better.

That's too bad because what I'm trying to demonstrate is that this man's terminal illness affects me as much as a random guy 2 towns over, who I also don't know. But I guess you're morally superior, so you can be proud of that.

Ive known two cases close to me where it did. One was my dad, another was a friend. Both survived too. Treatments have come a long way so hopefully for Mort's sake he can battle it as well.

The D&C&M guys called this. They were ripping on him not being able to pronounce stuff and saying he should be put out to pasture and Dennis said something along the lines of, "he always sucked, but I think there's actually something wrong with him."

All you are demonstrating is a clear lack of understanding ... of anything

What an empty comment, but I'm not surprised. You are a pompous ass all over this board. I wouldn't talk about demonstrating anything if I were you. See you in PM if you want to discuss more. I don't.

Mort will be forever branded to me as the guy who stood by what was wrong info because the "powers that be" wanted the misinformation out there. He sold out, plain and simple in exchange for access. It stopped being about the integrity of his craft and more about maintaining the info pipeline he needs to be publicly perceived as an NFL Insider. He made a deal with the devil.

He is human who is rightfully scared shitless right now and I wish him a speedy recovery and nice retirement.

Being diagnosed with cancer is difficult enough, being diagnosed at stage four is most often a death sentence. I watched a dear friend who was diagnosed at stage four battle for over four years before she had nothing left to give. I wish it on no one and take no joy in Mort's illness. We may see him as dead man walking, but his family will be living this with him and that truly sucks.

Am I missing anybody? Seems like a lot of bad cancer luck for ESPN.
