Celtics w/Irving: 78-49 .614
Celtics w/out Irving: 26-15, .634

Add that to Nets:
With him: 81-56, .591
Without him: 35-18, .660
I don't really care for those regular season numbers. There is no way that a Celtics team w/o Kyrie could go deep in the playoffs. You need him in those important games when he "turns it on" and successfully guards players like Giannis...

My sarcasm detector needs some work. Took me until the end of your 3rd sentence to get this.

Uncle Drew (shoulder) is currently without a timetable (again) and Spencer Dinwiddie is doing just fine without him.
Kyrie's games played per year since he entered the league in 2011: 51, 59, 71, 75, 53, 72, 60, 67, 11.
So, his average games played per year (not including this year) is 63.5.
FYI: Spencer is at $10.6m this year while Kyrie is at $31m.

I sometimes wonder if he'll end up going the way of Steve Francis and Stephon Marbury. Another 2 really talented dudes who were injured a lot and had "interesting" personalities.

edit: Marbury and Francis went to NY to die too. I guess Francis did in Orlando tho.

Kyrie had a cortisone shot on December 24th to try and avoid surgery, but surgery is still on the table, which would probably end his season:
Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving has been sidelined since Nov. 14 with a right shoulder impingement, and it remains unclear when he will return to the court. Irving said Saturday that he chose to get a cortisone shot on Dec. 24 instead of having surgery, and he will have to see how his body responds to it -- if he does eventually need surgery, it would mean being sidelined for three to four months, all but certainly costing him the remainder of his first season in Brooklyn.

"I tried to go without any anti-inflammatories, which is why it took so long," Irving said. "And now I'm at a place where the next step was to either get a cortisone shot or get surgery. So that was the ultimatum I was fixed with. So now I'm just doing to best I can to live off this cortisone and move forward if I need surgery in the future."

Maybe they ought to forego the shoulder surgery and proceed immediately to the lobotomy.

So Kyrie gets paid 380k per game, refused anti inflammatories for 2 months, just now got a cortisone shot, and might want mid-season surgery for shoulder impingement/inflammation? I'm sure all the shoulder specialists spent more time wondering why he is flying all over the country than on what to recommend. It's not that complicated and also not something that should potentially keep an NBA player out an entire season.

Kyrie knows they aren't winning a title without Durant and is doing some mental gymnastics along with his typical nonsense-speak to rest up for the season. Swapping him and Kemba was such a gift.

Good to have an expert confirm this.

"So that was the ultimatum I was fixed with. "

Let's play....who said it?! A management consultant or Kyrie?! And, yes, so nice that the Celtics are no longer dealing with this guy on a day-to-day basis.

Are there any medically sound reasons to avoid anti-inflammatories? Beyond generic kidney or liver damage potential?

Those are big ones, you can also throw heart attacks on the pile if that’s not enough for you (see: Vioxx recall). Still, a pretty safe class of drugs.

Also, imagine if the Celtics had traded Tatum+ for AD, and then this happened with Kyrie, along with Horford aging poorly after re-signing.

Imagine if Elgin Baylor, Isiah Thomas or Kevin McHale was the GM and Jim Dolan owned the team.

Sure lol—it’s just that AD scenario came close to happening.
Didn't it feel like AD was always pie in the sky?

Then Klutch entered, told the Pels he wanted out and the Celtics to go away. First by his dad, then backchanneled through NBA reporters and then explicitly by Rich Paul.

But your general point stands, having Kyrie would suck. AD and Al less so. Losing Tatum would really suck.
Celtics are in a much better spot then if their pie in the sky stuff had happened.

I think a lot of people thought it was happening after last trade deadline passed. The assumption was that AD wanted to get out by the deadline, and with that off the table he’d go back to being normal. Turned out to be not the case at all, obviously.

I have a hard time believing that the idea of Kyrie being part of the long-term future was still alive after Christmas or so of 2018. Whatever we realized from the outside must have been glaringly obvious on the inside. I'd love to hear the unvarnished observations of Ainge and Stevens.

Jackie Mac & others are basically taking care of that.

All we'll ever hear from Danny/Brad/Wyc, is taking responsibility for the dysfunctional situation, apologize/offer their mea culpa, chalk it up to a learning experience and move on. Like mature, evolved individuals do. The Celtics are in great hands going forward.

Been thinking a lot about Ainge's overall approach to trade lately, since it's possible that he could make minor or significant changes to the roster at this year's deadline. Given that he has accumulated a shitload of assets, it's certainly possible.

He is clearly ok to push his chips into the middle when the deal is right. But for all the complaints when he doesn't trade up on draft day or land the white whale, there's something to be said for not overpaying. He seems to have that value threshold clear in his mind and won't exceed it. That's a good thing.

Adding a player isn't a bad thing inherently. It depends on the cost. Losing Tatum for one year of AD was always a bad idea. But a test drive of Kyrie, for what they paid, wasn't. It just didn't work out.

I would say that once Ainge became convinced that AD would be unlikely to re-sign here if acquired, he accomplished his strategic objective of "make sure the Lakers pay through the nose" with great aplomb. We just didn't realize that was his objective, or became it. But the continued reports of his interest and offers, going all the way to the point where the Lakers acquired Davis, likely helped both his goals and that of the Pels.

from ESPN:
The state of the Nets resembles more a team taking on water and less a franchise that won the offseason headlines. Brooklyn has now lost five games in a row and is facing the toughest part of its schedule -- eight of its next nine games against teams currently in playoff position.

16-18...if their record gets really ugly I'd expect Kyrie to opt for surgery and take the rest of the season off with his buddy KD

This is nice to read:

Irving has long been associated with The Patrick School, formerly St. Patrick’s High School, where he transformed from an unknown into a national recruit alongside fellow NBA player Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Since returning to the Tri-State area over the summer, Irving has made saving the school into one of his biggest missions. As of last school year, Irving was paying tuition for roughly half the school’s 128 students. He’s already renovated the gym and weight room, among other parts of the school, and when he signed with the Nets last July, he further increased his financial influence with the school. When high basketball season started, Irving started helping out at practice. “There’s a different investment level right now, just being back home,” Irving told The Athletic. “I’m able to come to practices. I’m not too far away now, so I’m able to have more of an impact just being around the community. That’s all I’m after, man. I just want to see these kids do extremely well, have fun playing high school basketball and go from here.”

Thanks for sharing that. He is already making a difference in the lives of many and it seems like he will continue to be a positive influence to many more for years to come. I’m glad I didn’t buy a Kyrie is a douche t-shirt.

I'm glad to read that as well. To be honest, that is the kind of grass roots involvement that I enjoy learning professional athletes engage in. Some financial support, some personal time invested, some long term involvement. Very cool for all involved.

That said, can I suggest the alternative TShirt design that suggests he is a decent guy at home, but a self-centered attention seeking dick in the work environment? Available now in Brooklyn Nets colors at a shop near you.

I'm so thrilled with Kemba, the Jay's, the rookies and all the other feel-good stuff with the Celtics I'm not all that bothered by the Alchemist, who has found his treasure in Brooklyn. I figure he'll just pack it in at some point this season with the Nets going nowhere (7/8 seed, 1st round exit).

I'm also not judging anyone if they want to boo him. Most of it is just fan loyalty stuff and part of the sports world.

If you can find a good design, we can sell the shit out of that same theme based around Lebron. Something like this.

I’m some ways, he reminds me of Dwayne Wade who is a dirty player that strikes me as a really good guy off the court:

Hasn't this become his MO at this point? Keeps talking about how good he 'obviously' is..and how he's surrounded with inferior talent.. etc. Instead of just being a good teammate and trying to integrate so that the team plays better with him..as a team. Especially after you've been sitting on the bench for months with an injury.
