Had the chance to be on the field for BP this year and Casas came over to my kids and could not have been nicer.
To quote Forrest Gump, that's all I have to say about that

I don't understand how anyone can hate Casas. He's literally the most likeable player on the team. He's a great interview. He was one of the best hitters in baseball in 2023 after his slump, and his 2024 was derailed by injuries. In my opinion, his at-bats are the most enjoyable to watch on the team and often times the most competitive. I wouldn't trade him.

Unless there is stuff the public doesn’t know, I agree. He’s close to untouchable for me unless you can pry a top SP.

Would be curious given that Speier, Cotillo, McCaffrey haven’t picked up or alluded to it, almost as though you’d have to make up or exaggerate an existing story to feed fans who might be angry about him being traded.

Bear in mind that Cotillo reported Duran banging his head off the wall after the opening day loss to the Orioles, but that behaviour seems to be fine in the Red Sox clubhouse I guess, maybe it codes as “passionate” and not “deranged” if you’re enough of a real man I guess?

Btw I don’t think Duran should be traded based on his behaviour but only one player is having whispers spread about his conduct for far less than Duran has done. Just putting that out there.

There's always stuff the public doesn't know. I like Casas, I like him a lot. I think he's yet to hit his stride and for as smart as he seems to be in a baseball sense, he's still figuring things out. I think that includes being a bit more savvy in how he expresses himself at times. His pre-game prep doesn't bother me, I think the statements that he made a couple of years ago when some made a big deal out of him wearing fingernail polish were refreshing and the kid loves a live mic, big deal. I think some of his comments while he was coming back from his rib injury could have been stated a bit differently and surely left Cora and others in spin mode at times, but that's all a part of maturing as a MLB player. I will add that if at some point he seems to be more of a persona than a player things might get a bit old, but I think we're miles from there.

The “stuff the public doesn’t know” seems to be the whole ballgame here. Like others, I really like Casas. I get a kick out of him. His player interviews on NESN during his IR stint last season were incredible.

However, I also recall people lovvvvving Schilling 20 years ago. And we didn’t really know about his “red light” personna in the clubhouse. And how his teammates were annoyed by the guy and his whole schtick.

So who know really? Needless to say, Casas should only be traded for a major return. Cora should spend more time worrying about being over .500 after the ASB for a change and less time worrying about his mercurial first baseman.

I'm pretty sure that Tito's "he's a horse on Day 1 and a horse's ass on 2 through 5" comment pre-dated their time in Boston. And the sour taste from his "woe is me" act in the dugout while Mitch Williams was breaking down never really left me. But laundry.
There's nothing similar in Casas's (brief) MLB time. I can't imagine that his medical talk -- probably his only public stumble -- has caused a lasting problem. The rest is just bullshit from the high-waisters.

quick note, each sentence doesn't need to be their own post.

As for Casas, I don't understand how anyone doesn't like him, but the team has a fair better understanding of how he plays in the clubhouse than anyone here. Based on what I know, I'm against him being traded unless the return is Gilbert or Kirby. We'll see.

Yeah, wasn't one of Schilling's nicknames when he was an active player "Red Light"? Or was that just Frank from Gloucester's pet name for him on the Whiner Line? I don't know if we knew the extent to which he annoyed his teammates, but we certainly were aware he wasn't everyone's favorite guy in the clubhouse in real time. Performance overrules most everything, though, in the clubhouse and out.

As for Casas, it seems the negative stuff is coming from well known shit-stirrers in the media. Whether they're actually well connected and informed or not, they're just as likely to exaggerate and/or project their own opinions as insider knowledge for clout and clicks as they are to actually be breaking news.

He's about the most "mature" player on the team. Unless you define "maturity" in terms of how loud you can turn up the latest Maverick Hardcock country music song. He answers questions in umm...uhhh. you know....COMPLETE FUCKING SENTENCES. In two languages if you'd like. And he cooks his own meals. Maybe it would be better if he hired some women chefs and Deshaun Watson'd them. LIKE A REAL MAN.

Bingo. The high-waisters are threatened by Casas because he's smarter and cooler than they are.
I'd like to think that wealthy translucent weirdo John Henry wants to keep Casas around because he (Henry) wishes he could be that cool.

Damning with faint praise.
This post just nipped @john Marzano Olympic Hero’s FTW!

Loumer said he would consider trading Casas for elite pitching. He also said he rejects being the guy who wants to trade Casas and “the smart thing is to keep him.”

Play Tessie episode 161. https://overcast.fm/+AA1_Ju_Brs0

Trading Casas for pitching to save money sucks. Leaking a shit message to your toadies in the media to soften a potential trade blow sucks even more.

I cut the cord and didn’t pay for a ticket last year so they lost my $ already, but if they trade Casas?

Fuck. Them.

Schilling had the Red Light nickname since he was with the Phillies. And a lot of his teammates were really peeved at him the way he acted in the 1993 World Series. Particularly when Mitch Williams was melting down and Schilling had a towel over his head over reacting to every pitch like he was asked to pay back a Rhode Island small business loan.

He always had the perception of being a jerk but he was out jerk (who performed) so what are you going do about it?

The Casas situation isn’t about clubhouse stuff. It’s about his ability to stay on the field. He’s one more year of playing 90-100 games from being labeled injury prone and any value he has goes way down. Trading Casas this offseason while he still has a ton of value makes sense if you can get equal value back in return. I’m not saying he has to be traded, but if they’re interested in doing so then this offseason is the one to do it.

Chris Cotillo reported this on Twitter in 2023 and Alex Speier had a sit down with Cora who told him that Casas doesn’t do yoga anymore nor does he sunbathe before games.

Casas said that he was spoken to by the veterans about his behavior and that he was okay with it because he wants to fit in, blah, blah, blah.

So assimilation is probably complete which sucks. Because weird baseball (and baseball players) make the game more fun. But I’m glad that the pregame sunbathing is done, IMAGINE THE HORROR OF SEEING YOUR TEAMMATE WITHOUT A SHIRT?

That was 2022 during his cup of coffee as a 22 year old. Given they tried to extend him at the beginning of this year I’m guessing how he handled that wasn’t a problem.

If the team suddenly had a problem with his sunbathing and yoga, which he never stopped doing, it would be strange of them to have issued a bobblehead of him doing yoga on the field and used a video of him meditating on the field to promote the 2025 schedule before deciding it was a problem, no? Especially if this was causing problems in their own clubhouse.

Never know. Maybe the Sox FO didn’t want to raise the smelling salts budget when Teel made his debut and his Victorian-era teammates all lost consciousness at the sight of Teel doing his pregame routine.

Because its marketable, and there is very little chance it "turned off half the clubhouse" since I don't see how any of it would give rise to young millionaires caring. Now if you told me a show geared to hardos has a hardo saying hardo things. I would tell you John Henry was cheap,

Just for clarification, that was a quote from Ed Wade not Tito. I think Tito and schilling had a pretty good relationship throughout Philadelphia and Boston

Sure, sure, I agree with all of those things but you forgot to mention he paints his nails and he likes yoga.

btw I love Casas and it'll be a travesty if they trade him since his at-bats are the exact model of what they keep saying they want from their offensive players.

Manny used to go into the Monster and take a piss in a cup during pitching changes. Pedro was on camera being tied to a dugout post with athletic tape and a gag in his mouth on a day that he wasn't pitching. They seemed to work out pretty well in Boston. Let Casas be himself, fuck the narrative that he is a distraction. Play good baseball. And have fun doing it.

Worth noting that Baseball Reference had the Sox starters at +3.2, 5th in the AL (10th overall). And they've replaced Pivetta's stats with Crochet, which should push them significantly higher than last year's rankings. If they improve the bullpen, the offense will be more than sufficient.
A fair question is sufficient for what? Wild card 2 or 3? The goal should be the World Series and we need more than that unless Anthony and Campbell become Lynn and Rice and Gioliyo pitches like an ace. I will grant that if everyone stays healthy and hits their ceiling the Sox could have enough.
Sufficient to be a playoff team. Depending on a million factors, that could be WC3 or AL East champs. The Sox scored the 3rd most runs in the AL last year and, as I've posted elsewhere, can comfortably replace O'Neill's 156 plate appearances against LHP with internal performance currently on the roster (and will benefit from dropping his 317 underwhelming at bats against RHP where he managed a .693 OPS). The Sox don't need Anthony and Campbell play at an All-Star level in order to have a really good offensive team: all four infield positions plus DH should improve based on health and having a competent second baseman (the Sox had the lowest OPS for second base, .532, in MLB last year).

Unless they are lying about being on on Burnes/Bregman or even Tesocar/Buehler, they are at least contemplating spending over the first threshold (i.e., they have more than 20 mil left).

Or maybe they won't extend Crochet?
I don’t think they’re lying. I bet they remain in contact with Boras. Thinking about the Passan report on who is in on Burnes (and not listing the Sox), I’d bet they continue to check in with Boras, whereas Boras and Burnes have “eliminated” the Red Sox, so to speak.

Not that either party will or should ever say it, but I‘d bet they have an idea of the top offers that Burmes will choose from / negotiate upon, and the Red Sox are not one of those offers.

What was the clause with Devers that allowed his first year AAV to be lower after he signed his extension? If I recall correctly it remained at $15 AAV that first year despite the extension.
Darn you, I’d accepted that (aside from pieces like bullpen arms or bench bats) the off-season was done, and that we were looking at WC2/3 contention and that was it. Which by the way I was mostly ok with as kind of a B- off season (which is a huge improvement from recent years, to be clear).

But you and @Red(s)HawksFan fan are right. They could agree with Crochet on something like an arbitration avoiding one year deal at like 1/$4m and then a week later announce something like a 4yr/$28m extension with a $10m signing bonus and a player option at the end for another 1/$15m, thus guaranteeing Crochet ~ $140m, but more likely paying him 5/$125m and then he becomes a going into his age 31 season, just like Fried.

That would still allow them around $38m left to spend this year.

Certainly within the realm of possibility. I’d still wager they’re out on Bregman, and while they may be “in” I’m certain won’t be the top offer for Burnes, that does leave pieces like Lopez, Castillo and Arenado, or whatever player in play for a trade.

Just to confuse the narrative somewhat, Fangraphs does constant projection updates as offseason moves are made. They're of course far from perfect but worth keeping an eye on for a general sense of things. Right now, they have BOS with the second best pitching staff in the AL next year, behind only MIN. They have the BOS offense as second worst in the AL next year, ahead of only CHW.

Again, not saying I agree with any of this, but it's worth noting how a neutral projection system sees things currently.

Pitching, pitching and pitching
More specifically, bullpen, bullpen, bullpen. 31 blown saves last year.
As noted above, the Sox 2024 Starting Pitchers were ranked by baseball reference as +3.2 WAR, 5th in the AL (10th overall), and they added Crochet to replace Pivetta. The Red Sox Relief Pitchers were -3.9, 4th worst in the AL (6th worst overall).
I'm a Crawford fan, but if the front office does sign another starter, he could either be headed to the bullpen or trade bait to fill other holes.

The regression of Duran and Wyler is brutal on these and something I just don’t agree with. I’m not sure why we are supposed to expect Duran to suddenly become a horrible fielder a year after posting elite numbers.

They are, again, in a weird spot with alot of good players but really needing some consolidated WAR similar to the Crochet acquisition.

Duran being a true 5+ win player would go a long long way towards that. The other path is Casas and the kids being the real deal.

I don’t think they should add the starting staff unless it’s a 3+ win player. The depth in the high minors is really good plus the Sandoval acquisition. They don’t need a guy just to have a guy.

A sequence of events like signing Hernandez and trading Abreu for a catching upgrade is intriguing.

But they really are on a knife’s edge.

Also, I guess Story can make it through a full season now but in a monkey paw kinda way cause his defense is nearly as bad as Devers? These are funny.

If a bunch uptight red asses run Casas off the team because he likes to do yoga, nap before games and walk around the outfield barefoot then fuck them.

Get rid of those old guys and keep the younger dude who has the potential for 40 bombs.

The one thing that really sucks about baseball are the hypocritical unwritten rules and the shithead gatekeepers who enforce them.

The one thing I will say about Wong is he may have a real ability to "place" the ball and outperform projections like xwOBA. I was on him in another thread for being a candidate for regression, and while I still think that's possible, it's also possible he's got a real skill for hitting soft liners and groundballs through holes that will allow him, over the years, to have some success as a hitter despite a bad HH% and launch angle.

That said, he's already 28, and still a very bad defensive catcher, so unless there's a move to second base in his future, I don't think he's ever going to be a useful player to us.

I would still love to see this team acquire another catcher and deal Wong. There's still a lot of years of control and I could another team who needs a second baseman/utility player valuing him.

Real news I think we missed yesterday:
Dec. 20: Non-roster invites RHP Michael Fulmer, C Seby Zavala, INF/OF Nate Eaton, RHP Isaiah Campbell, RHP Bryan Mata and RHP Wyatt Mills added to Spring Training roster.

The actual transaction page lists Eaton as RF, which I think is definitely the right direction for him.
It’d really be a great story if Mata could look like he did in ST ‘23 when it wasn’t hard to see he had closer potential. Injuries and injuries really screwed up his development

I feel like Connor Wong’s future could be a super utility guy. Supposedly he’s been in Fort Myers since October working on improving his catching work, so we’ll see how that pans out I guess.

Yanks keep making moves while we sit around being cost effective.

if the Red Sox are gonna be cheap and they don’t care about having someone that’s a domestic abuser why not go after Trevor Bauer?
This board would literally explode if we made a signing like Paul Goldschmidt.

These post after every single move - Red Sox or rival otherwise - really have to stop.

If you want to bring some content to the board - do it. Complaining because the Yankees signed a 37 year old first baseman to a 1 year deal ain’t it.

I wouldn't be upset at all, kinda like the signing for NYY to be honest.

Though I agree doesn't make much sense for the Red Sox unless they have a good Yoshida or Casas trade lined up.

Nah...i actually presented this as a viable option on a 1 year as a DH several pages ago - Bring a veteran with some RH pop into the lineup for 1 year. Could play a little 1b as well.when needed.

I know, right? This 100%. I mean, this could just as easily signify that the Sox are looking for better, (and better is out there) as it does that it's about money. Talk to me about cheap if Henry's wallet is still in his pocket in March and I'll be right there too. We can't change the past, but all the signs I see point to more moves to come (not to mention a lot of great stuff here already) , and I'm really glad one of them won't be Paul Goldschmidt.

For God's sake, it's not even Christmas and we landed IMO the crown jewel of SP's, all reports say they're very active with a lot of possible scenarios playing out, which is exactly what you do after making a trade like that. You don't do that to stand pat.

It's like this place has become what it was created to get away from.

The gran facenda
Yanks keep making moves while we sit around being cost effective.

if the Red Sox are gonna be cheap and they don’t care about having someone that’s a domestic abuser why not go after Trevor Bauer?
Oh I’m so sorry to upset you and you’re entitlement. The Yankees have no problem spending money but the Red Sox wont seems like an important factor in the off season.
This is shit posting. If you don't have anything besides hot takes, don't post. If you want to address this, PM me.
As many others have mentioned, it is still early in the off-season.

Goldschmidt is projected to be worth just under 2 wins, so seems like a pretty solid deal for the Yankees. For whatever reason, the Sox haven’t seemed overly interested in using a roster spot on a backup 1b/dh, and they frankly probably can’t if Yoshida is seen as dh only. So guessing the Sox probably weren’t overly interested here; and if the Yankees were, that’s an uphill climb for the Sox, especially since it seems possible that the Yankees can offer him the potential for more playing time and arguably, a better shot at another ring.
