N.F.L.’s top lawyer had cozy relationship with Washington team president

For nearly a decade, the president of the Washington Football Team sent emails to a friend in which he casually joked about Native Americans and racial and political diversity, griped about referees and league initiatives to improve player safety, and arranged tickets and perks for his correspondent. He also thanked the man for getting a fine lifted and for understanding the team’s thorniest troubles.
That man was Jeff Pash, who — as the longtime general counsel of the N.F.L. and a top adviser to Commissioner Roger Goodell — would become responsible for investigating the team that had been run by the very executive he grew close to.
Pash appeared to engage willingly in the back-and-forth, sometimes reassuring the Washington executive, Bruce Allen, who was with the club from 2009 to 2019, not to worry about troubles that would eventually rock the team and the league, including reports about harassment of the club’s cheerleaders.
A trove of 650,000 emails gathered in the league’s investigation of workplace misconduct in the Washington Football Team’s front office has already resulted in the resignation of Jon Gruden as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, after The New York Times published messages in which he made racist, sexist and homophobic remarks. The league received access to the emails several months before the investigation was completed last summer.

But Allen’s exchanges with Pash, sent from 2009 to 2018, reveal a larger story about a clubby relationship between a top league official and team executives and owners he is expected to oversee.
When the N.F.L. fined the Washington Football Team $15,000 for manipulating its player injury report, Allen reached out to Pash and the penalty was rescinded. In another email, Allen expressed concern that the commissioner would accuse him of breaking rules on the signing of free agents, prompting his friend to reassure him, “He knows who it is and that it is not you.”

So who leaked this one? The NFL again? And if so, what did Pash do to get on Goodell's bad side? Or is he necessary collateral damage, and this is all leading to Snyder eventually being forced out?

Allen was fired in 2019.

So unless the NFL got word if him looking for another job?

Lombardi hates Bruce Allen so much he wouldn’t say his name on his podcast today. He kept referring to him as the Punter.

It's deflating to hear he isn't a standup guy.
Not bad. The fact that NFL ownership and management is a boys club of depraved assholes is hardly surprising. I hope the culture is changing for the better but it’s going to be a long road to redemption.

Lombardi thinks less of Allen than anyone I’ve ever heard him trash. His next pod is going to be fire. If anyone is interested check out the GM shuffle. As a plus he talks about the Pats a ton and you can learn about their philosophies.

Did you hear the one today. He talks about Gruden. It’s very interesting.

Yes. I haven’t missed one of his pods in a long time. He isn’t always right and I don’t always agree with his logic but he’s like drunk uncle Belichick. He’s tipped so many Pats draft picks and moves too.

I love his work even the ones where he was calling into Tate Frazier from a pay phone (that’s what it sounded like). After multiple times I think I messaged him to say about the audio quality “you are either coaching it or allowing it to happen”

Gruden maybe? He probably knew of others in the group who were doing similar things. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was told some things in confidence that start to come to light.

I’m actually optimistic. The players will continue to hold ownership’s feet to the fire on diversity. In turn, diversity will drive better professional behavior. White men behave better when others are in the room; when that becomes the norm rather than the exception, what’s accepted as normal behavior changes for the better.

That said, it’s definitely a long road.

It's definitely a long road. Jon Gruden, at the time a powerful voice associated with the NFL, called a Black executive "dumb" and then referenced his race, in derogatory terms, as to why he was dumb and unfit for his job. And half of what I heard from callers on the radio this week was "it's just words," and "it's no worse than when Antonio Brown called someone a cracker." There's a lot of people who believe there is no harm in white men using derogatory language to damage those that dare to enter their kingdoms.

Man, just when I thought I had put DFG completely out of my mind... I get reminded what a lying, amoral, sack of shit that Jeff Pash is, and it makes my blood boil all over again. Fuck this fucking league.

When I say I’m optimistic, I’m talking about the NFL. Diversity is good for business. That’s no less true for the NFL, and I believe the people calling the shots are smart enough to know that.

I’m considerably less optimistic that the people you heard on talk radio will change for the better, except on a generational basis (i.e., their kids will do better). But that’s a whole other discussion, and one which would inevitably veer into politics.

DFG is never completely out of my mind, but I felt the same way seeing his name again.

NFL HQ so quick to support Pash but wouldn't clarify lies/innaccuracies about Brady and the Pats.

Right. I am not optimistic if a head coach gets sacked but a league executive skates.
I am in no way condoning Gruden's emails or sympathetic towards him and his fate.

Simply pointing out that he is, in comparison, a small fish. Would be greatly surprised if this POS felt any damage from this. The league will protect him above just about anyone else.

I feel like now that the league itself and individual teams are being targeted by these leaks that it’s possible that the emails have been accessed by some 3rd party, but I can’t really come up with a good guess as to who.

It's too bad the scope of the emails is limited. I'd love for the DFG emails to be released as a side consequence of all this. Maybe there are still a few good ones to be had in this tranche.

Edit: Who am I kidding? Statistically speaking, the leaker is very likely to be a Patriots hater :)

The NFL has good reasons not to want to create any appearance they are accusing Pash of misconduct. That doesn’t mean he’ll survive this. My guess is he’ll get paid and put out a somewhat contrite statement about not wanting to be a distraction.

Or its some random person within the league office (or working for one of their legal partners) who has seen so much ugly shit they decided to start selectively taking people down.

Pash knows where the bodies are buried
Yeah, the chance that Pash is going to get fired over any of this is close to zero. Not only does he know where the bodies are buried, he buried on Goodell's orders. He could burn too many people. And he also has had the NFLPA's number far too many times to be jettisoned. There would have to be something so bad in the emails that Pash would make Gruden look like Mr. Rogers.
