I mean, that was my point: no one, not even one in need of a full-size C, is likely to find Cousins useful this season in his current state.

In answer to your questions, I’d actually say yes on both counts, if we’re talking about a notional fully healthy Boogie who’s had some time to marinate in Stevens’ system on both ends of the floor. But we’re pretty obviously not talking about that guy.
Yeah ofc...a fully healthy Boogie at this point is like a grandma with wheels. Sad.

Does anyone have anything concrete on a Hayward trade to Golden State? I see a few posters referencing a trade like that but I have never seen a media report linking those two parties directly, let alone so the C's can transmogrify Russell into something else. By all accounts, the TWolves are hot after D Lo now.

Its certainly possible that Boston will insert themselves into this transaction but it seems overly complicated. And for reasons discussed in the Hayward thread, trading him seems to be more of an offseason possibility than an in-season one. If these reports are even remotely accurate, Russell will be long gone by then (per the article, GS is waiting to be "blown away" but they probably need to move him sooner rather than later to maximize his value).

Maybe we should have a pretend GM thread and another one for actual rumors?

That's ridiculous. Of course they can assign a value to it, teams do it all the time. You might discount its value some due to uncertainty, but you certainly can assign a value to it.
I didn't say that correctly. The issue is finding 2 teams that agree on the value of something like this.

There were some articles last year about this when there was talk of dealing the Kings pick.

Yeah, I keep saying, he isn’t going any place until this summer after he opts out of his deal. There won’t be an in-season trade.

I think most of us here are in agreement. And to be clear, GS and Hayward are definitely an interesting pairing and the Russell/Hayward contracts line-up. I have just not seen any articles or even rumors that this is on the table.

Also, as has been discussed here on multiple occasions, transactions involving more than two parties are difficult and are less likely to get done.

Even if the Warriors are interested that’s not the sort of thing they can float out there until Hayward reaches free agency. This year is the Tank Battle 2020! campaign and Russell fits that to a tee. I expect that Myers et al are discussing their future options internally.

It’s highly improbable that the pick will drop much lower than it currently is. The range is almost set at 12-17. And if it does somehow beat the odds and roll over, it’ll probably land in a similar spot next year. These Grizzlies aren’t going to be a 3 seed or anything next year. They’ll be right back where they are now - fighting for a low playoff seed.

I think a trading partner could reasonably and confidently value this pick as a mid first in 2020 or 2021. The Kings are a perfect example of how young team improvement is far from linear.

Yep have to think Danny is somewhere in all that.
Not sure if anyone posted on here, but one of the guys on the Dunc'd on podcast had a wild 4 team trade involving Boston and Capela.

Had the Celtics trading Theis, Poirier and a 1st for Capela(with a stop in between in OKC for Roberson to make salaries work)

Houston would then trade the 1st, their own 1st and Roberson to Minnesota for Covington, then they'd trade Nene and Gerald Green to OKC for Theis and one of their minimun guys(structured as two separate deals so Theis isn't aggregated with the minimum guy).

So Houston would lose Capela and a 1st for Theis and Covington
Minnesota gets 2 1sts and dead expiring salary for Covington
OKC lowers their salary and tax bill flipping Roberson/minimum guy for Nene/Poirier/Green
And Boston ends up with Capela for Theis, Poirier and a 1st.

Pretty creative and complicated.

Creative but pretty sure not possible. No salary going out from us.

Why is Houston even looking to trade Capela?
My first thought would be what I’ve been saying for awhile that he’s not nearly the player his reputation makes him out to be.

Then I look at their roster and see a gaping hole in their frontcourt without much depth. I’m sure there is more to the story behind the scenes.

Isn't it just they have no other way to improve their roster (with james and russ being untouchable)?

Sure, it's just that if he were playing up to his reputation, they wouldn't be looking to improve in that way.

I like Capela and his salary generally, but i am not entirely convinced he represents a significant enough upgrade relative to what I expect it to cost. They are a playoff caliber team. They arent gonna just want picks. We still lose to most of the same dominant big men we do now.

You would also get Capela at a pretty cheap salary for 2 years after this, which ideally would be years that the team is an actual contender.

But does adding Capela to the rotation and removing, say, a Hayward and a Kanter, really get this team there? I'm dubious.

They could do a 3-team trade and trade smaller assets(say Kanter/Poirier/pick) for a player whose salary matches more with Capela and then ship that player and picks to Houston for Capela. I'm not sure I would do it because it would take away some flexibility and not sure Capela is a huge upgrade over Theis/Kanter/TL. But you don't have to trade Hayward to get Capela.

Capela/Theis/TL for awhile is kind of intriguing. Really hard to do any of this without knowing what Hayward will do.

The deal I’d most like to see, barring a shooter, would be VP+MIL first for Poeltl. He should matchable in RFA, and would fit well in our scheme.

Who are the dominant bigs we lose to now? What upgrade would you suggest to change that?

FWIW, Woj tweeted yesterday that they were looking to trade Capela for picks that they would then swap for a wing. So yes they want more, but it wouldn’t be from us.

edit- they would probably need one of our centers back, too

A three way with MIN works really well. Similar to the Dunc'd on 4 way, but less complicated. It saves HOU some money to use the remainder of their MLE in the buyout and stay under the tax.

BOS - Capela
MIN - Poirier, Langford, Nene, pick (s)
HOU - Theis, Covington

I wouldn't make this trade if I were the Celtics if this is what it takes. Poirier is expendable obviously but I think I'm with Devizier that I'd rather have Theis than Capela (or at least I feel they are close enough that I don't think giving anything up for Capela makes sense). Also I (and I strongly suspect the Celtics) are not ready to give up on Langford after he's played only a handful of minutes.

Edit: or what @chilidawg just said.

It's weird, the Warriors are basically in the same position with respect to centers as the Celtics are (or will be starting this Summer when they care about wins), so I should in theory love the idea of adding Capela, a young, highly efficient, and battled-tested true C... and yet, I don't.

I like Chriss, Looney, Spellman, and Smailagic for I think the roughly same reasons you guys like Theis — undersized but skilled and hard-nosed bigs whom I've grown attached to as "my guys." And I don't really like Capela, for no good reason other than the fact that he's a Rocket (plus not super charismatic-seeming, at least not in terms of his on court presence). And as talented as he is, I think he's at least partially a Harden creation.

I'm sure there are plenty of teams out there who would happily take Capela off their hands, though. 25 y.o. bigs capable of putting up 18 pts 15 reb 2 blk per 36 on .650 ts, and who have gone toe-to-toe with Rudy Gobert in the playoffs and vanquished him, do not grow on trees.

I suppose you are talking more about salary implications than actual basketball fit?
Speaking for myself, not OP: salary implications for sure, and I don't think there's a big enough gap in basketball fit to justify the salary difference.

Giving up Langford in a deal like that is insane, but this is the same podcast that thinks Jayson Tatum is a mediocre defender.

I think Theis fits the Celtics' defense better. That's why he's here; after all, he was the German League DPOY the year before the Celtics signed him. He's on the small side but is strong as hell, disruptive in passing lanes and holds his own on switches. Capela is probably a better overall defender but the difference is fairly small. Theis is also cheaper, as you mention.

The big advantage of Capela is his longer term contract, but I don't see Theis getting more than Capela in free agency anyways.

I like Capela fine but he can't step out at all like Theis can (even Kanter can at least hit a J from 15 feet every now and then), and so much of his "offense" is based around catching lobs and I don't trust a single player on the Celtics roster to be able to make that work. Harden has so much gravitational force on offense.

The salary going out from Boston in that scenario is Theis+Poirier for Roberson, which works
Then flipping Roberson for Capela, also works.

Woj: Detroit and Phoenix are discussing a deal centered on guard Luke Kennard, league sources tell ESPN. Suns' first-round pick is in play. Kennard has missed 22 straight games with bilateral knee tendinitis.

Possible package gaining traction for Kennard, per sources: Jevon Carter, Elie Okobo and a first-round pick. Suns imagine Kennard as a 30 minute-plus per game floor spacer to complement Devin Booker, Kelly Oubre, Jr., and Ricky Rubio.

Christian Wood Danny, make it happen.
Him and Poetl are the only names realistically being tossed around that sound good to me.

Even some of the scrubbier names being tossed around would require Kanter, Theis, or Ojeyle to make a salary match.

Christian Wood bounced around the NBA and the G-League for a couple of years before finding a home in Detroit. The C's (or any other team) could have picked him up for a song. He's already the player we're hoping Time Lord becomes.

Any chance philly is dumb enough to trade Simmons?
Aren't you a Clippers fan?

After having Harris, how do you view the Tobias Harris deal and the subsequent 5yr @ $180MM max contract?

While I didn't like losing Al, the Horford contract won't age well.

Philly ownership is some really bright guys (Apollo PE) but they have done some head-scratchers for a while now.

I am. I wasn't asking in clippers context. Just after another frustrating road loss, Ben vented a bit. I could see stupid ass Philly management "shaking" things up and committing to Embiid.

As for harris, i love the guy. But I'd rather take the 20% chance paul goerge is healthy in the playoffs than pay Tobi.

If they had to pick, I'd say picking Embiid is the easy call but he does have all those health concerns. It also largely depends what they got for Ben Simmons.

Is Capela worth Theis, Langford and Poirier, plus a first round pick? That seems like a lot to give up. Not sure that is our best trade option.

How much would someone like Tony Snell cost to acquire? I don't know if he's even available but I don't see why he wouldn't be. Apparently Luke Kennard is available and I'd love to acquire him but he's also injured and hasn't played since before Christmas.

Tony Snell seems like a really good fit on the C's roster.

I don't know that Capela is even a significant upgrade from Theis, so given comparative salaries and the other assets, I'd be very disappointed in that trade.

Could probably have Snell for two decent 2nd round picks. Problem is he makes 11.4 million this year, and a player option for 12 million next year.
