Don't know how many wrestling fans there are out there but I follow the sport fairly closely.

This year's championships are being held March 17-19 in the Little Caesar's Arena in Detroit Michigan (sadly, we'll have to endure some "Pizza, Pizza" commercials).

The B1G clearly is the dominant conference, so it's most likely that the national title will go to one of the 3 highest ranked teams in that conference: Penn State, Michigan, or Iowa. It's interesting in that Penn State, despite having 4 individual B1G conference champions, was edged out for the team trophy by Michigan (who had 2 individual conference champions) by the narrowest of margins, 143 - 141.5. Michigan did that with a very strong performance in the wrestlebacks. In fact, the last match of the tournament was a consolation match for 3rd place - after all the individual crowns had been awarded. BUT, it was decisive, as it pitted Michigan's #2-ranked Mason Parris against Penn State's #4-ranked Greg Kerkvliet, both of whom had lost unexpectedly in earlier rounds. Parris eked out a 5-3 win over an extremely lackluster performance by Kerkvliet, who to me looked like he didn't want to wrestle. To be sure, he needed a fall for Penn State to take the team title, and that was unlikely. But it just looked uncharacteristic for a Cael Sanderson-coached grappler.

I again came away shaking my head at the awesomeness of Minnesotan and Olympic gold medalist Gable Stevenson, who is a giant man among mere mortal boys. I simply believe there's no one out there who can beat him. And this 285 athlete does backflips after every win.

Bracket release is at 6PM EST tonight

Here's what USA Wrestling's outlook is for this year's tourney.

The qualifying tournaments are complete and it’s time to predict which team and individuals will perform the best at the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships that will be held March 17-19 in Detroit, Mich.

With that in mind, WIN Magazine is predicting that Penn State will win its first team championship since 2019 with the Nittany Lions followed by Michigan, Iowa, Arizona State and NC State, based on WIN’s Tournament Power Index.

Excluding bonus points, the TPI is compiled from numbers associated with individual placements/rankings based on our current rankings below: 20 points for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.

Unlike the regular-season rankings, this final rating predicts which wrestlers will win an individual championship and who will place among the Top 8 in their weight class to earn All-American honors.

Among the ten individual weight classes, WIN is predicting that two of Penn State’s defending national champs — Roman Bravo-Young (133) and Carter Starocci (174) — as well as Iowa State’s David Carr (157) and Minnesota’s Gable Steveson (Hwt) will repeat in this year’s tournament that will be held in Little Caesars Arena.

Meanwhile, WIN is predicting that Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis, who missed the last two national tournaments, will capture his third national championship at 149 pounds and will be joined on the individual championship stand by teammate and fellow EIWA champion Vito Arujau at 125 pounds.

The remaining four champions are expected to be Rutgers’ Sebastian Rivera (141), Cal Poly’s Evan Wick (165), Michigan’s Myles Amine (184) and Wyoming’s Stephan Buchanan. (197).
Top 10:

Rk. School Total Rank Top 8 TPI Pts
1. Penn State 9 6 105.5
2. Michigan 9 7 73
3. Iowa 9 6 72.5
4. Arizona State 7 5 67.5
5. NC State 9 4 56.5
6t. Cornell 6 2 46
6t. Ohio State 8 4 46
8. Virginia Tech 6 4 42.5
9. Iowa State 7 3 40
10. Nebraska 7 4 39.5

BTW, if that predicted score is even close to correct, that will be a dominant win.

Is he named after Dan Gable? I haven't paid attention to wrestling for the last couple of years (or the olympics), so I totally missed this story. Will have to watch some YouTube videos to catch up.

He is indeed named after the legendary Dan Gable, considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. It seems the US Mint could ask Dan Gable for an augmentation on Gold, whether it be the Olympics, World Championships, or any other regional games. I have the greatest and utmost respect for the venerable Dan Gable...but, and a very, very, should I emphasize VERY, VERY and HUMBLE BUT, consider that he won *only* 2 NCAA titles (he lost in a third final title bout).

Consider: only 4 wrestlers have won 4 NCAA titles.

Kyle Dake: 2010 - 2013
Cael Sanderson: 1999-2002
Pat Smith: 1990-1994

Logan Stieber: 2012-2015

You know, to me , the forgotten wrestler is this group is Pat Smith - the first 4-time winner.

Unlike the others, who are still very much in the public eye, Smith has apparently settled into a private world coaching the Arkansas Wrestling Academy,

Sorry, only Div 1 need apply.

I don't mean to diminish Has' legacy, with 3 Div I titles, but clearly he saw a lesser level of competition at the Div II level. So perhaps we give hime a 3.5. Or, perhaps extra credit for his post-wrestling NFL experience. So, say, 3.75?

Let’s not forget Wade Schalles, the Muhammad Ali of 70s college wrestling. Clarion State two-time national champ. Wade talked and he walked. He used to mark an X on the mat and then pin his opponent on that spot.

Gawd, back in those days, when the wrestling universe camped out in the central-eastern geography, Clarion was a work horse.
Shorty Hitchcock, two titles for Clarion. We made a drive from State College to Clarion through a whiteout storm to see the Nits rassle Clarion in 1977.

That would have been my senior year at PSU. I don't remember, but was probably there in venerable Rec Hall. My best friend at PSU, from Bryn Mar HS, wrestled at 118, a weight class that was eliminated after the 1997-1998 season, in the wake of 3 wrestlers' deaths due to excessive weight cutting.

What was your friend’s name? In the early 1970s, Nits fielded Harvey Abrams at 118 and his main job was to avoid a pin, hence his nickname, “Hang On, Harvey.”

Brian Kelmar. I think he may have wrestled maybe 8-10 duals, and a number of indy tourneys and challenges throughout his career. He was good, but couldn't break out as the top dog. All I know is that he was in top shape.

Brian and I were in the NROTC program together 1973-1977. So he didn't need any scholarship $$. He went on to become a Naval Flight Officer, then a pilot after somehow miraculously passing the eye exam that he previously failed to meet pilot standards (i.e., 20/20).

One of my favorite memories of him was he used to stow his Midshipman uniforms in my dorm room (I was an RA, so had a room to myself and had the storage space available). In 1974, our Sophomore year, he came in one day to get changed for the Battalion training session that day, and he comes in in a very, very animated state, almost yelling, "BRUCE, BRUCE, BRUCE..." I had no idea at the time that that was going to be my introduction to Bruce Springsteen. Being from the Philly area, Brian was very familiar with Bruce from hanging out at places along the Jersey shore. Brian said that the band was coming to Penn State and would be [I think] the inaugural event at the new University Auditorium. We got tickets and enjoyed what would become a classic theme for the band: as I remember, about a 2-1/2 hour performance (with a 30 minute break). Wow, just wow.

Brian had been living and working in Ohio, but is retired and living in the Richmond, VA area, last I heard.

Should be fun this weekend.

I believe this Team USA site will be updating bracket flow in near-real time if you want to follow.

Although it's funny, when you click under Results / Team Scores, Stanford somehow has already scored 3 points. Now that's a fast takedown for the win.

Penn State had three wrestlers who did not help their team chances. To be sure, these were closely seeded wrestlers, so a razor's edge. These guys will need to turn it on in the wrestle backs:

  • Drew Hildebrandt (17) lost to Loch Haven's Anthony Noto (17 ) 4-2 in SV, although this shouldn't have been much of a surprise as Noto was 30-1 for the season (14-0 in duals)
  • Beau Bartlett (13) lost to UNI's Colin Realbuto (20) 5-4
  • Brady Berge (16) Lost to Oregon State's Hunter Willits (17) 2-1

Penn State is building a solid lead halfway through the quarterfinals, leading Arizona State 43.5-36.0 through 141 lbs. The Nits are loaded in the upper weights. ASU just pulled almost even at 149 as we go thru the soft middle of the Nit lineup.

At 187 Michigan's Miles Anime (#1) and Penn State's Aaron Brooks (#2) have yet to wrestle their opponents today.
At 197, Penn State's Max Dean (# 1) has yet to wrestle today. Michigan has no one left in the 197 class.
at 285, Michigan's' Mason Parris (#7) is still alive, but there is no doubt who is going to win that class.

Dean wins his match by decision 4-3, with a controversial takedown with 1:07 left in the 3rd. Personally, I didn't think he had control and that the ref made the right call...stalemate. Sanderson challenged it and won.

Penn State now leads 66.0 - 59.5

So it looks likely that it will come down to Michigan and Penn State

Here are the wrestlers from each team that are in the semis:

127 MICH #1 Suriano
133 PSU #1 Bravo-Young
141 PSU #1 Lee
157 MICH #8 Lewan
165 MICH #6 C. Amine
174 PSU #1 Starocci; MICH #3 Massa
184 MICH #1 M. Amine; PSU #2 Brooks
191 PSU #1 Dean
285 PSU #4 Kerkvliet

If PSU and MICH make it to the finals at 174 and 184, it could be pivotal.

Beyond those two bouts, on paper PSU has a better chance to score points in the semis, with 4 weight classes that have PSU wrestlers still in and no MICH wrestlers, and 3 weight classes that have MICH wrestlers still in and no PSU wrestlers.

That is a very broad question. US only? But I guess when you say "college" you are limiting it to the US.

Additionally, are we talking about absolute "winningest" (i.e, the most real total wins), or the winningest %age (most number of wins as a factor of event in which they competed)?

We have several candidates. But I'm going to make a wild guess given the context:penn State wrestling under Cael Sanderson.

Through 2022: 219-26-2

Yeah, eight team titles in 10 years. This team just rewards you with the effort, the smart wrestling, the talent! And it’s gotta be the coaching staff and the environment in the wrestling room. Olympians come there to join the Nittany Lion Club.,I assume the varsity kids can work with those older guys.

Penn State just clinched the team title halfway through the medal round. Nine times in 11 years. Iowa was this good in the 80s under Dan Gable. Seems almost unfair to other teams when a dynasty takes hold. Truth is, most fans in attendance are rooting for individuals, family members. They hear the announcement that Penn State has clinched, groan, and keep watching.

As long as you think getting your ass kicked in practice by Bo Nickal, Kyle Snyder or David Taylor is fun. It’s pretty much conceded that Penn State dominates because it shares space with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club. Tournament season is fun because these kids are set up to win by guys who have won in recent years.

A great tournament for the B1G. Their 15 consecutive national title. 8 of the 10 weight classes.

From here:

After falling to Michigan at the Big Ten tournament, Penn State dominated the field at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The Lions crowned six All-Americans and generated bonus points in 12 of their 28 wins before the medal finals.

"It's different winning the team title in your hotel room," Lee said after winning his second title. "But our team really worked for it. We did a lot between last year and this year to make sure that was our title this year."

Penn State has been on a dominant run under Sanderson since the 2010-11 season, the head coach's second year at Penn State. The Lions have won nine of the 11 NCAA team titles contested (2020's tournament was canceled) and have produced 75 All-Americans.

Penn State is 32-13 in NCAA finals since 2011 and has claimed 53 titles overall.
That quote from Nick Lee is gold.

I think I saw a graphic during the broadcast that this is only the 5th time a r=team has crowned 5 individual champions.

Greatest coaching hire in PSU history was Dave Joyner and Ira Lubert reeling in Sanderson.

I’m thinking wrestling must be suited for dynasties. Iowa for two decades under Gable and now this run by Cael.

With the new transfer rule, it was fun to see Suriano try to take Michigan over the top, only to fall short.

I am still sour - perhaps undeservedly so - about the circumstances under which Suriano left PSU. I recall he got injured, and then IIRC claimed he was not receiving proper medical advice and / or treatment. It really cast a shadow. Perhaps my memory is foggy and I haven't gone back to look at it, but I recall being perturbed about the whole affair

I think he wanted to go up a weight and Cael had RBY coming in. Suriano and RBY have two titles each but Suriano is on his third school.

Interesting post-tournament comment from Cael:

On Carter Starocci: "I don't know if Carter told you, but he broke his hand at the end of January. It was a deal where he needed surgery, needs surgery, but he decided to just rehab it and let it rip. There’s always adversity, all the way up and down. That’s how life works. Obviously, that usually brings your strength out, sharpens your senses and brings some clarity."
