Will NESN lose the right to broadcast some games given the MLB-Peacock deal?

WSJ
The deal is for 18 Sunday games, primarily on the east coast. Odds are pretty good that there will be at least one or two Sox games affected so yeah, NESN is going to lose a couple games. Between this and the Apple deal, I'm not liking the trend we're seeing. I get that the future is streaming and all that, but games exclusively on an app means I'm locked into that game if I want to watch it. I generally prefer the ability to flip channels during commercial breaks, whether it's another game or a show/movie.

With cord cutting and NESN not on just two streaming services. Apple and Peacock is an easier way to watch Red Sox games. And that may just be for a handful of games. I believe exclusivity means they won't be blacked out. So there's that.

Came here to post something similar -- Youk is pretty good. He has a few crutches he comes back to (such as coaching nine year olds), but he tells some good stories, is giving some decent situational analysis at times, and isn't overbearing.

This man, with this hair cut, is 51 years old. How is this horrible show still on the air?

My guess is that it costs NESN nothing to produce (as in, someone else foots the bill) and they get to rake in whatever meager ad revenues it generates. Same for pretty much all their non-Red Sox/Bruins programming (Dining Playbook, NH Life, Dirty Water TV, etc). It's a small step above infomercials.

I wonder if his numbers get inflated by people falling asleep during the game. Ive heard him do ad reads on the radio so someone believes he's worth paying.

I grew up in the same town as him, graduated HS with his older brother. I vaguely new Charlie, but my memory was that he was a pretty normal kid, certainly nothing like he appears to be now.
Anyway, has anyone heard the story about his father's past? It's a pretty old story, but I'm sorta surprised there has been no chatter about it given Charlie's local fame.

Didn’t his dad run a cigar/liquor store? I assume that he may have had some ties to other nefarious pursuits?

That's what I thought. Does he get to keep the money from the sponsorship/ads or does a portion of that go to NESN too?
It depends on the negations, but I would guess yes. NESN has very little interest in developing/producing/financing any non-game programming and this show along with the dinning one as an example strike me as locally focused glorified infomercials.

He's got to be playing a flat fee to NESN and NESN turns around and airs the shit out it because they need to fill vast amounts of non-game time.

If the baseball lockout extended into the post-NHL regular season NESN probably would have made it an MF'er. of a summer.

This year NESN has been showing old Sox games. Tonight, the game is from 9/12/15. JBJ had a BA of .291. Homers by Betts and Pedroia. And others I probably missed. Also on the roster: Swihart, Castillo, Papi, and X. Edit: And of course, in the booth, Remy and Orsillo.

Would NESN get more mileage if they replaced Charlie by the Stooges, harkening back to the TV38 days?

Well that's why I'm curious. He's been getting paid by NESN for over 20 years to go fishing and be a dick on camera. Perplexing.
I’m pretty sure it’s the other way around, he pays them. I’m serious, someone else can explain it better if I’m wrong but the way I understand it is he pays NESN a fee to air his programs and he finds the advertisers and show sponsors, crew, etc.

They film it and bring the show to the channel. I don’t think it costs NESN anything. Same thing with Dining Playbook and Phantom Gourmet on TV38. It’s a common practice.

That is what I was referring to, above, but I couldn’t find confirmation. Those other two for sure are Paid placements.

This is a new concept for me.
NESN needs content. But they also don't want to spend money to create content because it's probably not worth it at the end of the day; like who's watching NESN at 10:30 on Wednesday morning? So they can either run infomercials or stuff like this and Dining Playbook and Dirty Water TV that gives the illusion that they're running real shows, but generate revenue.

I know I've always thought that they should run old games, but TBH I don't watch old games when they do. Maybe I'll catch an inning or two, or watch a few minutes of a hockey game, but they're kinda boring.

I’d be thrilled if they would replay “yesterday’s game in 2” overnight and into midday, as I usually miss the end of the game and it a fun way to catch up on what happened. Instead I wake up to a random game from this date in some random year.

Sox in 2 usually runs a minimum of three times a day: midnight on NESN, 5am on NESNplus, and 10am on NESN. I get that they have to pay bills and that dumbass gambling show has to air at 7am every morning, but NESNplus seems made for a constant loop of the previous night's game from 5am to noon or something.

It blows my mind they don't have a stable of Red Sox and Bruins documentaries and retrospectives to run in those slots. License ones that exist and then develop some new ones that they can market in collector sets to further recoup their costs.

I also figured, as more and more teams get some kind of coverage, they should show replays of the minor league affiliates' most recent games. Surely that is more likely to get eyeballs than Chuckie M or Dirty Water TV. But maybe the profit margins aren't as big.

This is what the YES Network does with the poorly named Yankeeography that profiles players and specific teams. : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankeeography

I’ve been waiting for NESN to follow suit for 15 years and am always surprised they aren’t doing it. I’m sure it costs something to pay producers and video editors and whatnot, but it can’t cost *that* much. But maybe there’s just no market for it?

They are content to pay 500 bucks for ‘Charlie Moore: I’m Gonna Fulfill Every Bostonian Stereotype’ and shows about local restaurants hosted by nobodies who probably pay NESN to get screen time.

They have done the "My Story" series profiling both Red Sox and Bruins players, which is a good idea, but it also isn't much of a show.

Well to be fair the rest of the country needs grist for the “Make Fun of New England” mill so I get it.

Exactly. Not much of a show.

This show wouldn’t exactly make itself but it’s almost endless content they already own the rights to and I’m sure they’d get some local journalism awards.

One episode about every Red Sox Hall if Famer interviewing their friends & teammates and showing highlights.

One episode about every World Series championship team, and then start going through other notable teams (03, 86, 78, 67, etc.).

Give NESN360 subscribers access to this content early and sell the DVDs / files online.

I have to imagine this would her higher ratings than the dead air they mostly show, right?
