New Home Run Derby Rules, is a better thread title, just sayin'.

I don't really like the derby, and I understand it's not for me, but this is stupid. If the top two home run hitters in one round are matched up, one loses. That's not a good system for this type of competition.

It should be two rounds.  It is way too long.

And with there being a timer, I can picture hitters rushing or overswinging to hit the distance thresholds to extend their timers.  It's an injury waiting to happen, IMO.

I think the Home Run Derby is really dumb, but...

...if you saw Josh Hamilton at the Toilet in 2008, well, that was kind of awesome

This is still so convoluted. Just give 8 guys 20 strikes. The guy with the most wins. If 2 guys are tied, you get 5 more strikes each. If they're tied, 3 more. If they're tied, then 1 each until the next guy hits a HR.

Turn the entire HRD day into a ASG Open House at the ballpark. Get creative. Have players & HoFers signing throughout the park. Have former players/HoFers do a Old Timer's HR Derby earlier in the day. I don't know. The HRD itself should be like the Hot Dog Eating Contest. Short and sweet.

Is there evidence that supports the notion that young fans like a long drawn out HRD?

It's mad genius, but I suspect the result will be that we'll discover it's really hard to hit home runs in bunches when you can't spit on anything that isn't a cookie.

It's about more time for which TV ads can be sold. I know - you are shocked, simply shocked.

This really does seem like among the dumber routes they could have gone. Seeding, brackets, and a clock with "bonus time" may be essential to a soccer playoff format but for a contest to see who can hit the most the farthest, not so much. Hell why not just go to a pitching machine now, the robot won't get tired and slow way down in the 3rd round like a human.

These rules seem way too complex and involved. Why not just go to a bracket with the old format and fewer outs?

I for one love these new pace of play fixes.  Maybe they should add a clock to regular games too.

They already have a fan fest similar to what you describe, so your proposal is asking them to combine two mediocre money-making ventures into one really good one that makes less money.

Which, you know, would never happen.

Are you going to have an umpire call strikes?    Part of the problem with the derby as it has been is players just standing there watching pitch after pitch that looks pretty perfect go by waiting for the one that motivates them for some reason.

So really I have no problem at all with a 5 minute limit.  I think some of the extension rules are a bit silly
