One of my favorite days of the year. Even though a majority of the time I'm less than psyched on the Pats outcome. Tonight feels different. LFG!!!!

I'm not even sure what benefit there is to a Patriots smokescreen--does he mean they really want Fields? Does he mean they are happy at 15? If so, the smokescreen is kind of meaningless.
I'd do that in a heartbeat.. The odds of anyone in this draft giving you even 1/3rd of the value in their entire time in NE that Rodgers would give you in 3 years is pretty low.
Yeah, true. I guess I'm a little surprised that people think SF's offer is a reasonable one. Rodgers is 37 and seems to always come up a little short.

This is an honest question, no snark intended: do people forget that this is standard operating procedure for the Pats? To leak a QB they "want" (Tebow, Mayfield, Jackson) so that people report on that and not on who they really want to draft?
Yes, but you also have to consider the odds that Rodgers will decline substantially as soon as this season, the difference in salary against the cap between him and the rookie QB, and the possibility that the rookie QB stars for you for the next 15+ seasons.

I dont feel like listening to that podcast for context. Is Lombardi saying that the Pats just plain have no interest in moving for a QB, or that specifically their interest in Fields is what is being overblown
So to do that hypothetical deal, the Packers would have $38.4m dead cap ($1.2m more than his current cap hit), & the 49ers would be acquiring him on a 3/$73.9m (less per year than they pay JG).
If you're trying to win Super Bowls, then yeah, giving up 3 for a few years of running that out seems like a great plan, especially since he's kind of a local for SF.
& if I'm the Packers, yeah, I'd have to get way more than 3 because I'm still trying to win a 2nd SB in the Rodgers era & he really papers over a lot of organizational failures over the year.

IIRC, if a trade happens, the clock resets to 15 minutes for the new team, yes? Thus the time window for when Pats woudl be on the clock, barring a trade up, could move significantly later, right?
For reference, this would presumably also cover someone starting a thread about a trade or pick that hasn't been officially announced? "Welcome to NE Justin Fields" while NE is on the clock for example.
I am not sure. At first glance, I believe this answer is no. Last year, they let teams stop the clock with trades because everything was virtual but I don't think that's a normal practice.

Sometimes they just announce the pick later so talking heads have more time to talk about the trade imo.

The sort of real-life what if to this is what if the Colts had kept Manning and traded the #1 pick for a boatload of stuff to build around him for 3-4 years?
Teams don't trade up without knowing exactly what they will do with the pick, so pretty much a moot point.
Good point. That probably would have worked out better for them in hindsight, since the closest they got to a title with Luck was 45-7 in the AFCCG.

I heard they talked to Mayfield, but I don't really recall an orchestrated leak about that.
And I didn't say they don't do it, I said IN THIS SITUATION, I'm not really sure what it does. Does some team out there go "Oh crap, we like Lance, but the Pats like Fields, we''ll take him."
That would be a pretty big move up for the Saints. I guess KC moved a similar amount of spots to get Mahomes. But if I am a team like Detroit or Carolina I'd much prefer a package from the Pats (15), Bears (20), or WFT (19) to the Saints pick (28).
Edit: plus Carolina is not going to trade their pick to a division rival to pick a QB (same for the Lions trading with the Bears)

Glazer says its not for a QB but its hard to imagine the Saints paying that kind of price just to draft a corner or something.

That’s interesting because a team could use the perceived value of future picks to its advantage if they had its eyes set on a player. If Carolina preferred a future second to 46 in a package to swap 15 and 8, then great.
I can't imagine a scenario where Fields falls to 15.
There is a scenario where the current 14 teams in front of the Patriots don't draft him. But I can't imagine a team like the Bears, Raiders, WFT, Colts, Steelers, Saints, or Tampa don't jump up to 7-14 to snag a potential franchise QB. I don't think the league lets him tumble all the way to the Patriots at 15.

Basically to me it goes this way...
Mac Jones goes 3, Pitts, Chase, Waddle go 4-6, one of 7-9 takes a trade for Lance, the other two decide they want the best OT and best CB respectively. Cowboys are locked in on a CB, Giants ask for 4 firsts to move down or eles they are being "fleeced" so they stay. That leaves you 12-14, I think LA is desperate to make sure they get a tackle so they stay. So it only takes MIN and PHI wanting to get a particular talent to make it happen.
Unlikely, but possible if enough teams in that range are happy with their QB situation and the 1 tradeup i for Lance.
Pats taking Fields (or Jones or Lance) at 15 would tell me that they didn't think he was worth trading up for. Unless no deal was possible, I'm not sure what I'd make of that.
A QB falling well past their mock draft consensus isn't all that unusual - Haskins, Rosen, Manziel, Bridgewater, Rodgers are all examples that come to mind, I'm sure there are more.
My completely uninformed guess is that if a QB does fall to 15, however, it is much more likely to be Lance than Fields.
