Patriots announce they now have "home marketing" rights in Germany: LINK

Interesting data:
The Patriots were the first NFL team to provide German language content to fans in the region, launching Twitter and Instagram accounts and a landing page on Patriots.com in 2017. In the years since, the team has brought German fans to regular season and playoff games at Gillette Stadium via sweepstakes, streamed preseason games live to Germany with Sebastian Vollmer and Markus Kuhn, and collaborated with German broadcasters on the first regular season live broadcast from the United States to Germany. The team also launched a longform video series in German featuring Vollmer and Jakob Johnson, showing fans a behind-the-scenes look at team operations, in addition to hosting monthly Q&As with fans and Vollmer.
The team's press release makes it seem like the Patriots have exclusive rights, but it turns out the Buccaneers, Chiefs, and Panthers also can market in Germany. LINK

Some teams got rights for more than one country. Did they Pats try to get any others and fail? Mike Kensil apparently couldn't deliver China for the Jets.

There is the map.

BTW, this is so stupid, let teams grow markets organically, nobody is Brazil is gonna become a Dolphins fan because you tried to force it.

What does that actually mean? What are the activities that are prohibited for teams that don't get HMA's? The UK seems like potentially a pretty big deal considering actual NFL games are played there every year, not sure why it makes sense to limit what the other teams can do in that market.

This doesn't really make any sense to me. So multiple teams can be awarded HMAs in a market, but then teams can also be awarded multiple markets? Like, why are the Dolphins getting 3 separate markets? Also, why wouldn't the NFL want to take advantage of the obvious geographic proximity for Buffalo/Canada?

I believe teams bid for them, and had to have proposals for the activities they wanted. So many places could be as simple as not having any interest or concrete plans. How they picked between them is unclear. As is what activities you get to do that you usually couldn't.

It's unclear whether these rights are in any way exclusive. Buffalo and Detroit both have fans just over the border in Ontario -- why would they not have the right to continue developing those markets?

Yeah, I need more details on what this constitutes. What benefits come with being granted HMA in a certain country. I don't see how it could be exclusive rights.

Are the Bills not going to be allowed to market in Toronto? What about Detroit? The Rams are the only team that can market in China?

I'm honestly surprised Brazil was the only Latin American country the Dolphins got. The number of wealthy Latin Americans (including numerous Brazilians) I have met since moving back to Boston who either have property in Miami, or have family that does, has blown my mind. The Dolphins would be completely failing at their job if they weren't aggressively marketing to that clientele. The only one I don't get for them is the UK. The Dolphins would obviously do a lot of Spanish language marketing, so Spain makes some kind of sense in that regard. But why the UK? What the hell is the connection there to Miami?

In regard to the Dolphins and the UK, when interest in the NFL first got hot there in the 1980's, Marino was at the height of his game. Florida also gets a hefty chunk of British tourists.

Is NFL calling Taiwan China? I saw this pointed out on Twitter and the map does seem to show that.

I would assume that like Ireland they are just dumb, but also.... let's be real, the NFL owners are 100% behind 1 China if that's where the money is

Miami was one of the first teams to go to London, I believe Miami v NYG was the first UK game. They play there somewhat regularly, and have a pretty decent following there.
I, for one, and am excited to read the “Dolphins Fans in Germany” thread tell me how accurate Tua is German. . . .
Tua operates with German precision.

Also, Miami has a Brazilian player on their roster. Durval Queiroz Neto has been on their roster the last two years and they get an extra roster spot to carry him as part of the international players program.

Looking forward to Kraft’s “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. Don’t really understand the fairness in one team getting all of China (and Taiwan) while others split far smaller markets, but it’s the NFL, so I’m sure it’s above me.

China? I don't know about China. Sure its huge, and holds vast promise , but I don't know. The Chinese negotiators will demand the that Rams sign onerus one-way deals, learn the game, then steal the IP, and produce it for a fraction of the cost here, and take over the market.

Kraft has an in with Putin. A pact as it were bound by a champion's ring. Putin feels invested in the Pats success. Kraft will approach Russia in the spring from the west.

I'm sure this is because the NFL knows that if it listed Taiwan separately, it's dream of marketing to mainland China would be stillborn. IIRC, Marriott got in a ton of trouble with the Chinese government for listing Taiwan on an Internet list of the countries in which they have hotels.

As a German speaker who studied German lit and history in college, I have a ton of friends and acquaintances in Germany and Austria, and the few who have any clue about football seem to like either the Dolphins or 49ers. IIRC they’re all around my age so would have grown up in the 80s and early 90s, when Montana and Marino were at their peaks.

Regardless, I’m thrilled the Pats have been putting the time and effort into the German market, I think Germans would LOVE BB if they knew more about him and appreciate the quality of football the Pats offer. As much as playing a regular season game so far away requiring so much travel might be an impediment and competitive disadvantage for them, i really hope the Pats get tapped for a game in Munich. I would definitely go. Munich is a beautiful city and it would be surreal to see the Patriots play a game there.

At first I thought it was because of flights from S.P. and Rio to MIA, and then I checked this and I don't even see anything. (Bunch of other S. American airports though)

https://webvids.miami-airport.com/webfids/

It makes no sense
Your first instinct was right, flights to Miami are some of the most common - there's probably some covid-related shenanigans going on. Miami is a very popular destination for Brazilians, only behind Disney and New York from what I can tell. And it's not just tourists - a disproportionate amount of rich people here move to Miami.

No one gives a shit about the Dolphins, though. And having it be only the Dolphins feels like some sort of punishment, like "you'll eat it and you'll like it!"

Yeah, I've been involved in American Sports fora/social media in the UK since 2003. Florida teams have always been overrepresented based on the vacation factor -you'd be more likely to see a Marlins or Rays fan than pretty much any other small market team. People catch a game while out there and get hooked.

I wouldn't say the Jets are particularly popular, but I know they've done pretty good outreach with the fans they do have whenever they've come over (which is quite a lot, because teams tend to play unappealing matchups in London, and the Jets are a consistently unappealing matchup to other fanbases). Plus anything NY has a certain cachet. I'd say, in some order, biggest UK fanbases are Niners, Steelers, Pats, Packers, Dolphins.

I am from Austria and football and the NFL is actually quite popular here. Not sure about the hard-core fan base, but the last Super Bowl still had over 100,000 people (out of 8 1/2 million) watching around halftime at three in the morning on a normal workday. We actually have at least two games a week live on free TV, more if you add the German channels we can also receive.
Of course soccer and winter sports are bigger here, but football has a decent following. Also, while many teams consist mainly of amateur or semi professional players, the Vienna Vikings won the Euro bowl five times already.

My Patriots fandom truly started when I attended a Super Bowl party with 6000 other people in February 97, which was massive for the time.

I think you mean Dolphin fan in Germany. Let's face it, they barely have fans in Miami much less elsewhere. (I mean seriously, I spent 30 years hanging out in Southeastern Florida sports bars (pre-covid) and about the only game that no one ever watched was the Dolphins game. Unless they were playing the Jets, Giants, or Pats, in which case those fans watched.)

Anecdotally, I just got back from London two weeks ago, and the only NFL merch I saw were roughly a dozen Pats hats and jackets. Most or all of them could have been worn by people from the U.S., but I was more struck by the fact that they were the only NFL team whose stuff we saw.

My partner lived and worked in China for around 5 years from 2013 to 2018. This is anecdotal but I asked my partner which was the most popular NFL team there and without even blinking they said “The Patriots”. I giggled with glee and asked why. And then they said a phrase in mandarin which means “They are the best”. Partner worked with hundreds of people there but only knew 4-5 NFL fans and they were all Patriots fans. They also all loved Belichick and thought he was a legend. So it’s anecdotal but over the years every single NFL fan met was a fan of our team.

It's perhaps somewhere down on the long list of things wrong with this but...doesn't Buffalo actually have a bunch of fans in Canada?
