Doesn't take much energy at all. Never hated Buckner or Stanley. But McNamara and Rich Gedman can go to hell.

You have named my two goats, too.

But as I've mentioned here before, I grew up with the Mets as my "National League team" due in part to geography and Mets fans in the family. I hated them like poison in 1986 and for a few years after but gradually lost my bitterness and came around fully when the Mets played the Yankees in the 2000 World Series.

The U.S. became allies with Germany and Japan in less time than you've held your grudge against the Mets.  ;)

Look, respect to your NY hate.  I get it - I moved down to the area for high school and I had to endure all manner of NY fans.  That said, Yankee fans are horrific pieces of garbage while Mets fans were always a bit too snake-bit to really be dicks - though they approached that territory after '86.

I also forgot about Curtis Granderson - great dude and happy to see him make the WS with this NY team vs the Yankees.

I'm fine with the Mets making the World Series, particularly because it is a butt hurt for the Yankees. But there's no way I'll root for them to win over the Royals or Blue Jays.

This is truth.  I enjoyed being on the subway today seeing all the Mets hats and jackets, because that meant two things: 1) there were Yankees fans watching it all with bitterness in their hearts, and 2) some uncertain percentage of those hats and jackets were being worn by bandwagon Yankees fans, who are dead inside and know it.

Sure, that exists and it exists both ways where Mets fans that come over and root for the Yankees, I definitely know a few.

That being said, I am pulling for the Mets to win. And I think a lot of Yankee fans actually are. I have lots of close friends and family members who are Mets fans and it is fun seeing them happy. Now that I am an adult, I really don't enjoy seeing fanbases not to get to enjoy winning. I was even happy for all of you guys after all your recent championships, even 04.

An enemy of an enemy is my friend.

SSS, but most if not all of my Met fans in south central CT are really good people who handle the ups and mostly downs of being Mets fans with grace. 3 in a decade shortens the length I can throw my baseball hate to one team. I'd be very happy for the Mets fans if the Mets pull it off.

It's nice to be able to root for good playoff baseball without loathing and bias filtering into the equation.

Mets fans and Red Sox fans suffered together through the most entitled Yankee fan era ever. It's like England and America. Sure, we fought way back but our understanding of the evil that can exist in the world has made us strong together. Win it for the good guys.

The fact that people here might root for the Blue Jays instead makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

I'll say this about Mets fans, those poor bastards have suffered over the past 15 years.  From Fat Fuck Clemens throwing a bat at Piazza during a WS loss to their bitter rivals, to Beltran watching strike three in 2006, the collapses of 2007 and 2008, by the end of which I couldn't even tease my Brother-in-law any longer.  It was like wearing boxing gloves outside a women's shelter; mean, unnecessary and likely to lead to a richly deserved ass kicking.  Then Bernie Madoff came along and took Wilpon for the fool he is, leading to living as a small market team in the biggest media/population center in MLB.  Internally, I got Schadenfreude diabetes watching all this.

Then somewhere between opening Citi Field; a great ballpark and everything the New Toilet isn't; fan friendly, approachable, visually appealing and good concessions, and building a likable team together on a budget, I lost the hate towards them and the joy of seeing them fail.  Might be due, in part, to the Jets filling that role of NY team you love to watch wallow in mediocrity, but much as I tried to root against them, I can't do it.

Edit: Mets weren't swept.

The three Sox world championships titles have mellowed me also.  1986 still stings (it would have been the only World Series title in my dad's lifetime) but that was gift-wrapped by McNamara and handed to the Mets IMO.  These Mets players seem very likable and it's nice to see Collins making the most of his first playoff run after so many years waiting to get there.  I'm pulling for a Mets-Royals series so that I can be happy with either team winning.

Someone needs to tell Cubs fans that it's time to make things right with Steve Bartman.  What they've done to this poor guy since that night is as much a curse on their fanbase and franchise as any stupid billy goat myth.

Mets won one game in 2000. Each game was pretty close, too.
