deGrom is a better pitcher than Thor, but I think there is a logic to having your best pitchers throw as many innings as you can, and worry about it if you advance.

I'm laughing so hard right now. I didn't even post on /r/cardinals, I just linked to the thread on the /r/baseball game thread and I got this message:

How should I answer? Maybe I'll get free tickets.

That would make a good SoSH group project

Edit- although I guess it would be tough to argue, hes not technically wrong, just hilariously thin skinned

Meanwhile Kershaw is finally silencing his critics.

That's tremendous, on the Reddit stuff.

It's supposed to be their Seven Bridges of Königsberg, obviously. That said: Doesn't the answer lie something in Pythag records? That the team with the best record doesn't always wind up being deserving of it, based upon that metric, runs scored, runs allowed? This year, Cards were supposed to be a 96 win team, Toronto at 102. Fuck, you could throw this back at them: 2013 had the Cards better by one game than the Red Sox, 101 vs. 100.

The Sox had a better record that year, but the example I immediately think of here is the 2007 Diamondbacks, best record in the NL, had a negative RS-RA, Pythag of 79-83, +11 in Luck.

It still amazes me how the Mets and Astros were some of the worst teams in baseball the past few years and here they are. Remember when the Madoff scandal hit and it seemed like the franchise would take forever to recover?

Yeah, I think it alerts the mods if their threads get linked elsewhere on reddit. It's to stop brigading.

I just realized.. The guy who did that long post about how STL is the best team, is the mod of the subform

So, if the 162 game season is what counts, why didn't the Cardinals just declare themselves champions at the end of it and go home?  Why did they try to set up their rotation for the postseason?

Their heroes don't seem to agree with them.

The questions for goofballs like this could go on for hours.  The only sensible response is to laugh and offer him more paste.

This is why I hate the Cardinals, really.  It has very little to do with the players on the field.  Their fans are the most unreasonable bunch of whiners I have ever met, and for some reason talking about baseball turns otherwise normal people into raging morons.  The few Cardinal fans I know and consider myself friends with also let it bleed over into other areas of sports, too (for instance, one of them was the most vocal person I know about the Super Bowl this year being "fixed").

I like seeing them miserable.

I also really dislike Mike Matheny for some reason, but I don't have a good explanation for that.

DeGrom vs. Greinke in game 5.  That will be good stuff.
I think every home team wins game 5. So if that happens two of the three teams were 6 outs away from advancement and will have failed to do so.

And all three Game 5 home teams had to win the final two of the series to advance. Which of the three is least likely to do so?

So DeGrom is still starting over Syndergaard in game 5? Why was he warming up so hard tonight then?

If this was his throw day, it might make sense

Yeah, that's what they're saying on Twitter, the Mets asked him to wait to throw his normal afternoon session until the middle of the game, but there was no scenario where he was coming in (according to him post-game).

Your tears are salty and delicious.

Kersh was fantastic tonight on 3 days rest. Strongly disagreed with Mattingly going to Hatcher to start the 8th but it worked out - sort of. Taking out Turner was an insanely curious move unless he turned over his wrist on that sharp grounder.

Any other SoSHers going to be at the Ravine for game 5?

Turner left with swelling in his knee, he thinks he'll be fine for game 5 or at least good enough to go.

How much credit does Manny get for helping the rookies?

I dunno about the rest of them, but supposedly Manny fixed Soler's swing before he got hot in September and into October, culmination in reaching base in his first 9 playoff PAs.
