Penn State's Jeffrey Field is one of the best natural grass fields in the country.

41766

Admittedly, indoor arena Holuba Hall is used for men's and women's early season lacrosse games.

So the NCAA is covering itself in glory and has revoked a conference title from the UMASS Women's tennis team due to a $252 clerical error. There was a good article on it in the globe yesterday but since that is paywalled here is a version from Front Office Sports - https://frontofficesports.com/umass-womens-tennis-fighting-ncaa/
Quick summary - UMass ASKED the NCAA to look into some potential infractions, and through the course of that investigation found out the school had given out $9,100 in scholarship money that shouldn't have been given out ($252 to two Women's Tennis players, the rest to Men's Basketball players). They were deemed inelgible, and stripped of wins...including the A10 title the Women's tennis team won in 2017, Coach Judy Dixon's final season. She was a pioneer for Women in many ways and was involved in one of the first major Title IX lawsuits while at Yale.
...even Senator Chris Murphy tweeted about it -
View: https://twitter.com/ChrisMurphyCT/status/1319815511451045889?s=20

edit: I have known one of the players mentioned for awhile now, and she started a petition - I'd be remiss not to at least mention it here - https://www.change.org/p/ncaa-support-a10-champion-umass-women-s-tennis-vs-the-ncaa
As a follow up, the NCAA appeals committee upheld the decision and funnily enough decided not to get into any detail about the women's tennis program receiving only $252 in benefits for an unknown/unused phone jack due to a clerical error.

Jim Calhoun, who has written a memorable postscript to his Hall-of-Fame coaching career at the University of Saint Joseph, will step down effective immediately at the men’s basketball coach.
“You’ve got to know when it’s time,” Calhoun told The Courant Thursday. “We’re a really good team. The program is in great shape, we’re going in the right direction, now’s the time.”

Calhoun, 79, who led the UConn men to three national championships, has had numerous health issues through the years, overcoming cancer and heart disease, but said he and his wife, Pat, are in good health right now. He will turn the program over to Glen Miller, who has been his associate head coach, and plans to spend the holidays with his family and head to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where he has a vacation home.
“Back home in Pomfret, there’s a very happy woman right now,” Calhoun said. “Pat said, ‘I’ve got you back.’”

It's a club sport, but the Ultimate collegiate national championships for 2021 were held this past weekend into Monday in Norcom, California. This was delayed to now from the normal spring schedule due to, well, you know. Players who graduated in 2021 were allowed to be eligible to play, which was great. Run by USA Ultimate, it is the highest level collegiate championship. Apparently 18000 athletes at about 800 different colleges participate in the sport. For the championships, there are Division 1 and Divison 3 levels, based upon school size.

Why do I share? Well, my daughter, a Junior at Middlebury, competitive dancer by trade the last decade (and still dancing in college in two different groups), having played her last team sport around the age of 10, is on the team that just won the National Championship yesterday!! She joined the team as a frosh, and was able to move her way up to varsity this past year, although it's a big team and she doesn't get a lot of playing time. But she got some decent PT in the tournament, and even was on the livestream (quarters, semis, finals) and got her name mentioned for making some good plays a couple times. The Pranksters, as they are called, are a fun bunch, but also have some great players, including an All American as an 18 year old. What's wonderful about the win is that they did it while getting all 23 players in the championship game. They are self-coached. As a dad who has coached my son in various team sports over the years, and watched a lot of sports, the willingness and ability to play all your players and win a championship game -- or any perceived important game -- is just, well, rare.

Congrats to the Middlebury men, too, who made the D3 final but lost. Almost pulled off the double.

My wife was able to go, and had a great time. And I've gotta say - Ultimate is a great sport. Athleticism, skill, cameraderie, respect for teammates and opponents, with a rugby-esque kinda sideline and between plays fun element. We are new to it, but have grown a real appreciation for it. Go Pranksters!!

ACCNX is showing the “For Welles” BC lacrosse game v Pitt. It’s on the ESPN app and you don’t need to be a ESPN+ subscriber.
was going to go in person but I don’t like rain

BC once again playing in the NCAA (Women's) Lacrosse Quarters. 1st quarter done. Game is near capacity at home at the Newton/Law Campus. They're playing South Bend. Physical game thus far, multiple cards.

Commencement is Monday so Alumni (home of the regular season games, at least the non-Fish, open to the public ones) is not available.

BC is the 3 seed. South Bend is the only unseeded team left.

Technically this is a revenue sport today ($5 admission for adults, per NCAA. Not sure how much the NCAA keeps and how much BC keeps).

BC goes to their 6th straight Final Four where they will meet Syracuse.

And an upset (based on SOS and conference but not on record) in the making in the following game.Very tough defense in this one.

Three-peat!!!!

The Middlebury Pranksters Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team won its third straight D-3 National title today in Obetz, OH. They defeated Carleton College 15-12. Very happy for my daughter and her teammates for pulling this off. Great run by the 11 seniors, who will graduate next week

The Midd Men’s team also made the final, but lost to Colorado College 15-10. A nice run by them as the three seed, losing to the one seed.

Fly Eagles, Fly! 6 straight NCG's. What a 4th quarter. Best team in Boston. Going 4 corners 20 miles from Chapel Hill is always great, too

Awesome, congrats! Seems like Carleton's been a title contender for decades, either CUT or Syzygy. Nice victory there.

It's f'ing annoying/ironic whathaveyou that BC is currently getting beaten by a team that includes/led by Tony Amonte's sister (head coach, she has 7 rings in 8 years and HOF membership and went to Thayer too), Tony Amonte's daughter, and a transfer from Tufts at G.

fake edit:

Not their day. Too many turnovers (12 in first half, season high for entire game is 13), not enough shots.

Belated thank you. Yes, Carleton always good. The college championships has only been going on since about 2010, but with this win, Midd tied Carlton with 3 total NCs. Carlton has more runner ups.
Oh, I was thinking of D-I. Carleton competes in both (they have 4 D-I titles), and seemed dominant when I was playing in the mid-1990s. But looking back they weren't actually winning titles yet then—apparently they qualified for nationals 16 straight times from 1990–2005, but their best results were 2nd in 1996 and 2000 before finally winning their first in 2001.

Yes, they do both divisions, both men and women. Both men's teams, and the D3 women have won NCs, per the college website. I was referring solely to the Eclipse (D3) on the three NCs. Not sure how they decide which players do D1 and D3, but both teams seem to do very well.

Anyway, it's been a fun and elucidating experience for this dad to learn about, watch, and grow to enjoy and appreciate this sport, as well as get to know the players and their families a bit.

#5 seed Penn State lost 16-15 to #1 seed Duke on Saturday in OT in the NCAA National Lacrosse Championship semi-finals. After Duke went up 6-4, the teams traded goals for nearly the entire remainder of the game, with Duke opening a 2-shot and Penn State answering to close it to 1 each time. Duke went up 15-13 with a little over 4 minutes in the 4th period, but Penn State finally scored 2 consecutive goals to tie it at 15. The Nittany Lions' last 8 scores were recorded on 8 consecutive shots. The winning shot by Duke should not have been allowed, as the scorer's foot clearly was inside the crease. But the call was not made and, unbelievably, that is not a reviewable event in lacrosse. Still, a fine year after Penn State went 3-11 last year, ostensibly with the same team.

Per Boston.com, forced binge drinking and eating the resulting vomit
Heinous stuff you don’t expect to see at a university without Greek life.

Students responsible may/should? be expelled.

Maroon and Gold meet for this morning was obviously canceled
First inter-scholastic road meet is currently scheduled for October 7
@GW
First inter-scholastic home meet is currently scheduled for October 27.

Plot twist: the parents of the supposed victims are insisting it didn’t happen.

Is this because their kids are being ostracized? Because the accusations were overheard by a third party instead of self-reported? Or did it actually not happen? Some of the quotes by the parents of the freshmen in here read a little oddly to me:
“I do NOT expect there to be evidence of salacious rumors like ‘eating vomit,’ ” the parent of one alleged freshman victim said by e-mail.

Another parent said, “This is a crime in search of a victim. It has been totally blown out of proportion.”

While acknowledging that an unspecified number of team members engaged in excessive underage drinking, one parent said by e-mail, “I expect my student will testify that he was voluntarily at these gatherings; that he was having a great time; that he did not feel forced, coerced, or mandated to do anything; that he did not feel that he would be ostracized for not participating; that he did not vomit in connection with his participation in the events; and that the events did not cause him any emotional distress or physical harm. I also expect the evidence to be that no one was injured, and no one required medical attention, to my knowledge.”

The parents of other alleged freshman victims provided similar accounts.
“We just want the public to know that there aren’t any freshmen complaining that they were harmed or coerced or in any way,” a parent said. “The public thinks something horrific happened, like what you think about during hazing events, but nothing like that happened.”

Another parent said, “It was a huge group of kids, and everybody had fun. A couple of kids puked, but nobody got hurt, and now it’s national news.”

A good warmup before tonight's NBA game (7:30pm) can be found in the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament championship match, 6:00pm ET - Stanford vs Florida State. #1-ranked FSU has a possible #1 overall NWSL draft pick in striker Jordynn Dudley (who starred for the USA U-20 team this summer) and likely top-5 pick LW Onyi Echegini (who missed the start of the season to play for Nigeria in the Women's World Cup!), and they absolutely crushed teams all season. #3-ranked Stanford has a plethora of talent but had struggled to put it all together, until they looked the best they had all tournament in offing #6 BYU in the national semis last Friday. They're led by likely top-5 pick CM Maya Doms.

Just found out (bad for tv optics) that this game is today instead of Sunday because of BYU making it a couple years ago (and they were close again this year) and so they didn’t want danger of moving it, again.
