Nook Color: sneaky Android tablet

I have spent several hours reading over the past couple days on this device and have had no problem. I did, however, change it to use white text on a black background which I think is much easier on the eyes with a backlit screen (this is an option in the settings for kindle app).
I've done the exact same thing and haven't felt any strain on my eyes.

Dumb question because I am android dumb....

How do you delete an App? I have downloaded some free apps to try and found them wanting...so now how do I remove them?

Couple of ways.

Go back to the market and go to "my apps" and click on them and just hit remove.

Or better yet download "Uninstaller Pro" which is an app that will make a nice easy list of your other apps and let you pick what you want to uninstall. I use it on the Nook and on my phone.

If you're talking about on a rooted nook... you should have an app called Nook Color Tools. click all settings. then click manage applications. then the application you want deleted... there's a button there that says uninstall.

Personally, I use Launcher Pro (on my phone, I'm using go launcher on the nook), in which you open the app drawer, long press the app you wanted deleted, it'll then show your homescreen (as if you wanted to put a shortcut there)... also a trash can will show up, move the app over the trash can (dont' let go yet)... hold for a second, and then it'll say drop to uninstall. then click uninstall.

You shouldn't need extra apps to delete apps.

Ok, another android rookie question. How has battery life been? Mine seemed ok the first couple days, and yesterday I did a full charge per the battery doctor app (from 10% to 100% with the app running) and then took it off the charger and went to bed. I woke up this morning and it was down to like 85%. It obviously shouldn't be losing that much power just being on standby for 6 hours, any idea why this would happen? Possible fixes?

Something is running overnight. astro file manager had a task manager in the tools section (i think). Maybe open that up and watch it for a little bit to see if you have an app running that is eating battery.

It is the process manager in Astro.

FWIW, I did this last night. (Thanks again, Foukey!) I thought I'd share the perspective of the technologically challenged -- or as my wife likes to call me, "that idiot."

I bought the NC by combining a Groupon coupon + buying some electronic gift cards at 15% off from Cardpool (plus some money I had at BN). Not including the credit we had at BN, we got about $50 off that way. It just takes buying the electronic version of the GCs at the beginning of the day, and having them email you the number/pin before heading over the store. Perhaps excessive, but saving a few dollars is a tenet of my religion.

My wife picked it up late last night. (They have a ton of stock at Chestnut Hill, fwiw.) I've never rooted anything before, though I do own an Android phone. I had previously spent an hour or two reading about what to do, read this thread and its links, and watched the video I linked to earlier (and I think one at nookdevs). Just reading didn't make as much sense as seeing how simple it was through the video. I made the mistake of trying to do this from a Mac at first, which did not work well - I couldn't get the Mac to transfer the img file to the sd card properly. I moved over to the PC, downloaded winimage, and it took about 15 minutes to complete an autonooter root (software 1.0.1 was preloaded, so I didn't need to do anything there). I upgraded to the 1.1.0 rom (I decided to wait until HC works well to do anything else), and it took another 15 minutes from start to finish, again following the video instructions from theunlockr (with another 5 minutes to add back YouTube, which 1.1.0 dropped - easy instructions on how to do that from XDA).

I haven't tried to overclock or anything, and I chose the easy but limited (no flash) 1.1.0 release, but it works well as a very stable, basic tablet, for a bit under $200 after discounts. I'm just using zeam launcher for now to keep it simple. Google Maps even finds the location well enough by ip address. I'd not use this to replace an iPad - it really doesn't appear to do things like movies/tv shows well (I may be in the minority, but I actually like the way that works on the iPad), yet, though I haven't really played too much. But its a very solid, and relatively cheap, tablet for doing nearly everything else.

I was able to use the battery doctor app to kill a lot of the processes that were running that seemed to help. I really need to just sit down and take some time to set it up how I want, though.

I forget to be honest. There was a crapload of stuff like BN cloud sync, email sync, and a bunch of other stuff I didn't recognize. I kill the tasks before bed last night and battery life barely dropped overnight this time.

Props to Foulkey for posting this, looks like too much fun not to take the plunge. Cashed in some AMEX points and used Cardpool to get my actual cost of this to around $135!

One question, the guide says get a microSD card "at least 128MB" but preferably more. Is there any limit to how much memory you can cram in this puppy? Got 16 GB in my Droid, figure to drop that into the NC as well.

Any microSD card 32GB or less should be fine.

Honeycomb is apparently completely unstable on the device. Has 2.2, at least, gotten to the point where it's stable and usable? 2.2+ JIT the Dalvik code before execution, and should see pretty huge perf benefits (so long as it isn't crash-tastic).

I now have it overclocked to 1.100 mhz

Runs like a dream.
Looking at the thread on overclocking at the androidcentral site, assuming the instructions to follow are for the "nookie froyo running from internal memory" if following your initial instructions?

Rooting looks pretty simple and hard to screw up, what are the potential dangers of setting up overclocking?

Lowered battery life. Potentially more hardware stress and a shorter hardware lifetime (but not so much you'd likely notice).

Unless you run applications that stutter, though, I wouldn't bother with it.

OK, understand that, was going to root first and see how things run and if a speed boost is necessary. If something goes "wrong" during the attempt to overclock are there any issues to be weary of? Hate to think after getting the NC cheap and rooting that the last step ends up bricking the thing. Reading up doesn't look like anything to worry about, figure it either runs successfully or just stays in stock mode, but haven't seen it spelled out either.

More than anything it just looks like fun to try it out.

Mine is overclocked to 1.1ghz and it's running great. I haven't charged it in about 5 days and it's still at about 50% battery life so I don't think it impacts the battery all that much.

There's really no way you could brick the thing with overclocking. If it turned out to be unstable you could just flash the original kernel back on it.

If it's anything at all like Android phones, then legitimate "bricking" is damn near impossible. You definitely can't brick it by overclocking. Bricking is almost exclusively related to flashing radios incorrectly (on the phones). Overclocking too much can leave the device unstable, and if you go too far then it can throw you into a boot loop, but you can fix that (like Joe Sixpack said) by flashing a new kernel in recovery. I think I'm gonna buy one of these things next weekend. Everyone seems to be loving them.

The initial charging is underway and I'll attempt to root my Nook. As an FYI for anyone thinking of taking the plunge, Best Buy has Nook Colors for the same price as B&N. The deal is that they are giving away a free case with any purchase ending tonight. So if you're buying, get the free case (I think it's any case up to $49).

Just a post to say thanks to Foulkey for the thread. I've never rooted anything before but did so in about 15 minutes after watching the Huskermania youtube video. If you're chicken like I was, watch that guy's video first. It definitely puts you at ease with what you're doing.

So I am debating on doing this but I am curious how does it stack up to a dedicated tablet? is it a good enough substitute or would I use it and wish for more? FYI the Framngham B&N has boatloads of these things..

Th@t Kid - I look at it as a entry level tablet that will keep me happy until the new Honeycomb tablets are out and have stabilized. I thought about waiting for Xoom, Slate, etc. Once I saw the pricing on the Xoom, I figured it will be Christmas before the market to get to reasonable prices and for a few tablets to differentiate as the ones you want.

So far, this thing does what I've asked of it. I'm looking for some basic apps (AngryBirds, GoogleMaps, etc), good internet (happy with Dolphin so far), and an eReader (it's still a NookColor when you want it to be). My next task is to get Flash working.

p.s. - it seems like you want to pick a tablet that people at NookDevs and XDA are going to hack. If you've got a huge community hacking these things, you'll always have something new to go get. Based on that, I was down to the NookColor or the GTablet. The GTablet was another $120 and the screen was a disaster. It might have been more future proof with the better processor but I knew I'd be annoyed with the screen after seeing one in person.

It has no HDMI (or other video) out, which is a complete dealbreaker for me; if you don't need that, it's a very nice Android tablet. It's a little more finicky than an iPad, but also more open and flexible.

I'm not going to lie, I'm getting pretty annoyed with Android so far. Nothing seems to work intuitively, things that should be easy are a mess right now.

Latest issue is that I can't get the keyboard to come up at all, no matter howany different text fields I click in. Any ideas?

Wish I could help. I feel like you (and some others) are the perfect example of what would happen to me if I took the dive on the NC - super excited to get going and then it turns out rooting it is a bitch and "nothing works intuitively" or easily. Don't get me wrong, it's probably a nice thing to have, but if I'm in the market for a tablet, I might as well grab the best one possible and not some hacked e-reader.

in my opinion, a hacked nook is never going to replace a purposefully designed tablet. You might need to set your expectations lower if you get a nook.

The reason I pulled the trigger on this was because I was itching for a new project for the next month or so, I am genuinely curious about how I would use a tablet and I was also thinking about getting an e-reader (i was going the Kindle would be $99 soon). Foulkey's well timed thread cured all the of these itches.

so for me...the $250 was really top see if I would use a tablet enough to care about spending twice as much for an ipad or if the xoom ever gets a reasonable price tag. I don't imagine it would be hard to sell it on craigs list close top what I paid for it, especially a rooted one. So far i am liking it, although I am using it almost exclusively as an e-reader.

Post script: I was really looking for a new project at the same time this thread came up...and had settled on building a 1/5th scale remote control dune buggy (a Baja 5b ss, search for it on Youtube for some videos of it running)... Which would have set me back $1200 after getting the kit and radio (which I was in the process of getting money out of my pokerstars account). So in essence Foulkey saved me almost a thousand dollars I didn't really gabe. Thank you foulkey.

Is there really going to be a major difference between a rooted Nook Color and any of the other tablets that are coming out? The main reason I bought one is it seems to do more or less the same as what I would get out of an ipad, but was only half the price. I realize that some of the other tablets might have a better processor or whatever, but I can't really think of anything that any of the other tablets would be able to do that I can't do on the Nook.

It's when I'm trying to do anything. Any time I try to click in any text box, the keyboard won't come up. Could be in a web browser, general search, signing into AIM, Facebook, etc. I've tried killing some of the tasks running and also re-booting, nothing yet.

A little more of the issues I've run into:
- I've also been unable to sign into AIM, it just hangs when trying to do so.
- The audio/video doesn't match up when watching videos on Rock Player Lite. It will start out fine but get progressively worse the longer something plays.
- When I'm in Gchat (Talk) it just crashes and closes on me randomly.
- Battery Doctor gets stuck, saying my battery level is way higher than it really is. If I kill it then re-open, then it's accurate again.

This is just what I've found so far off the top of my head. To be honest, I really don't have much to use it for right now as everything I've tried to do on the Nook my iPhone 4 does much better. I really want to learn Android and the potential is there, but it just seems like a ton of effort to have stuff not work correctly.

Seriously debating un-rooting and returning it.

Part of me wonders if something got screwy when you did the root. I would probably return it too if mine did all of that stuff too. If it was me, I would try returning it to stock and maybe rooting it again. Something seems to have gotten messed up somewhere, but it's probably to impossible to figure out what it is.

I read a bunch leading up to rooting my nook (and afterwards). Often times someone tries to root it... and it doesn't work exactly right. I have no guesses as to why this seems to happen every once in a while.

Like Foulkey suggested, try unrooting it... and use the stock keyboard and web browser. Then maybe run Nookie Froyo off the SD card to see if you still get the same keyboard issues.

Enough people have had problems be cured by just doing it over that I think it's a pretty valid method to try and fix what is ailing it.

I had to use the stock keyboard, when I tried switching to the gingerbread keyboard (had no idea what it was, but was curious) after rooting, I could not get the keyboard to come up and had to go back and change that setting back to fix it. I would at least go into the keyboard settings and try resetting that or at least checking the setting if you haven't yet.

Enjoying mine so far and I am an Android Retard.

Big thing I am "struggling" with now is....

I want to be able to play both Videos (mostly AVIs)and Mp3s.

Any good apps that you guys suggest? I have tried some of the free apps....and 1 plays avis well but not music....one means any media has to be on the Sd card so I cant "take advantage of the onboard 4gb....one it plays music well but Video is stuttery....

I dont want to pay to try a bunch of different apps but all the free stuff has negatives.

Also....How do I over clock?? I Rooted by following Huskers Video. Is Overclocking similarly as easy??

I rooted last night on my new NC. Looks and works great with a couple of exceptions. Gmail doesn't sync and locks up repeatedly but I'm going to start from scratch and see if I can get it working.

I use SETCPU app from the market but I'm not sure that works correctly on the Nook Color either. As for media, I am using Meridian on my phone and that's worked fine but haven't tried it on the NC.

SetCPU is great (and free, if you want, from XDA), but I think it requires that you already overclocked it - it sets preferences for clocking given your Nook's set up. If you haven't overclocked, there is no real need for SetCPU (though you can always underclocked on purpose, but the Nook's battery seems good enough to me to not worry about that).

I overclocked a couple days ago. It is pretty easy - if you already added a Rom through Rom Manager, it is the same process. It takes about 3 minutes. There are some basic instructions online (I think I followed them from Androidforums), but the instructions in the XDA thread are good if you've already used Rom Manager at least once. You just DL the kernel to your computer, then move it to the root of your SD card, then use RM. When you reboot through RM, it should be at your new clockspeed.

It does noticeably speed up the device, but it also adds some strain to the battery. I read that may shorten the lifespan of the device, but not enough for most of us to care - but for battery usage, it probably knocked about 33% of the battery's life away.

I use SetCPU (I think I'm using 2.1, but I don't have it in front of me) to set up three profiles: normal/plugged in, it is at 1,100 / 300. At 50% battery, it drops to the stock issue of 800/300. At <20% it drops to 600/300. We won't have a lot of times where that matters, but on some long trips.

I use RockPlayer Lite for movies and right now I'm just using winamp for music, but I'll likely move over to DoubleTwist in time. The Android threads here give the pros and cons for each of the media apps. Should be the same as for the NC. RockPlayer seems to work fine for me; I don't have the problems 4P had. I will use VLC if any of the VLC programmers develop an Android app. It works great on the iPad. (I also don't have the keyboard problems 4P had, though I'd really like to use Swype and don't think I can.)

No idea how it got switched.

Yea you really only need SETCPU if you are overclocking it.

Glad to hear you figured out the keyboard 4P. Are you still thinking about returning it?

I want to take some time this week/weekend and either re-root or upgrade to Froyo (or both). I think once I get out of the tablet shell-ness of it, it could be better. I'm still reaching for my phone before the Nook to do most things though.

Android is a lot of work though.

Well it's nowhere near this complicated on a non rooted phone, that's for sure. I tested Froyo and didn't really like it. I'm going to wait for them to perfect Honeycomb before I upgrade anything. I would avoid Froyo 4P.

I use doubletwist on my phone to play some music and some podcasts (older ones that Listen seems to not want to keep on my phone). I believe it has the option to play videos as well (it's always coming up as an option when asking what to use to play a video... although I've never done it). I'm not sure if it'll play different formats though... including avis.

For overclocking, you need to install a kernal that will support overclockigng. It's very easy to install. You need to get Rom Manager, install (flash) clockworkmod recovery from within rom manager, and then you can use rom manager to install the kernal (in the form of a zip file) from Rom Manager. Rom manager will open and run CWMrecovery and install the kernal for you. then you need to use SetCPU to instruct the kernal to overclock.

Caveats: I rooted using AN3.0 with stock 1.1 already installed. Being versed in using rom manager and cwr, I installed them, and did a nandroid backup on my nook. but then I couldn't exit out of CWM recovery... i had to actually flash another zip that removed CWM to get out the boot loop. this seems to be a problem that rooted using autonooter 3.0. Which apparently is not an offiical release by the autonootering team. someone modified the previous autonooter to be able to root the stock 1.1 rom.

If you did root via this method (I don't know what the husker video did), then you probably have to run clockworkmod from an uSD card. this method is available on XDA. I'm going to try this to install the overclocking kernal... just haven't done it yet (I'm still researching it a little bit... will the uSD CWM recovery install the kernal to the internal memory? that's what I'm trying to figure out).

Either way... here's the tutorial and the files you need to overclock the nook. Before flashing this kernal, I suggest doing a nandroid backup, as I don't recall seeing the stock kernal being available to install if this doesn't play nice with your nook (also... I have no idea if people are having any problems with the custom kernal).

http://forum.androidcentral.com/barnes-noble-nook-color/54135-how-overclock-nook-1100mhz-stock-nookie.html

And if any of these terms I'm using seem foreign to you... read up on them before installing the kernal. if you don't really know what you're doing, then you probably should educate yourself in case there's problems.... mainly so you can explain what you did.

No. I should have said that you only need SetPCU if you are planning on overclocking it by installing a new kernel.
Got it.

Did you try running froyo from both the sd card and internal memory? I'm thinking of trying via the sd card just to see if I can get flash working on it.

The problem with Froyo is that it doesn't install the market or any of the google apps. As far as I can tell you have to install those programs by Auto Debugging the device and doing it through your PC. Just seems like too much work at the moment since Honeycomb is getting closer and closer every day.

If that's not the case I would definitely give it a shot though.

Caveats: I rooted using AN3.0 with stock 1.1 already installed.
Yeah, I did the opposite - I rooted from 1.0.1, then moved to 1.1. I understand CWM isn't perfect after Autonooter 3.0, so this seems like a slightly more stable method.

Thanks...

One more question (and probably one more after that... and after that...)

Do you have problems with the wifi disconnecting after the nook goes to sleep (I'm running 1.1)? there's a [FIX] thread on XDA for adhoc wifi support, which I assume this fixes (it requires ADB installation). Just curious if other people have this problem, and if they remedied it and how.

I did once in a while. There's a quick app that fixes it but I just can't remember it right now. I will post it tonight. It's a super easy fix though.
