Here is the problem, the only reason he will go is if he sets the GM house on fire. And if that happens (which at this point sounds somewhat realistic) his value would tank.

There is no realistic trade option for Fernandez. Either the Marlins will ask for the moon or Jose will whip it out at Loria's Christmas party and the Marlins are begging for Marrerro.

I'm not sure that the Jose Fernandez talk is unrealistic. Fernandez is rejecting a pre-arb contract and the Marlins don't look like contenders in the next 3 years to me, with a bad on-field roster combined with a bad farm system. Given the extent of farm system suckage, a trade that brought them prospect depth might make more sense than the MLB ready young talent demands of the Indians or Mets, which could match up well for us. And they are certainly a team who knows better than anyone that you can create a profitable franchise by limiting payroll and skimming off revenue sharing.

It would take a lot, but then we have a lot to offer.

I think you're right that trade talk isn't unrealistic, but I don't think Miami is in too terrible shape. At least I don't think Miami's position players are too bad - they had 5 guys above 2 fWAR last year (the Royals also had 5, the Red Sox had 6, which reminds me just how bad Boston's pitching was), and Realmuto and Ozuna are young and well-regarded and likely to be better. The Marlins' pitching is pretty awful, though. Fernandez led the staff in WAR despite only throwing 64 innings. They might think they could compete around 2017 if their hitters keep developing, but they'd need to keep Fernandez and sign a bunch of guys or trade him for like 3 pretty good, close to MLB-ready pitchers to have a shot.

Of course, these are the Marlins, so who knows what the hell they're thinking.
