I was actually watching that game, still can't believe it. And the fact that they followed him to the ambulance on camera, looked like one of those fake ambulance bits in WWE.

Not sure how many people realize what a dirty SOB Messier was. Not even talking about that hit, which was probably a "clean" hit that era (kinda like Scott Stevens' big book of headshots), but he was pretty deadly with the stick too. I'd love to see the reaction to a Mark Messier in today's world of internet, youtube, and HFBoards.

McIndoe did a breakdown of it on Grantland and IIRC the Stars GM or coach said that Modano should've had his head up and it was partly his fault.

I feel like that was the Gainey/Hitchcock regime but I could be way off.

That was the prevailing wisdom at the time though. Anytime anybody took a shot like that (Roenick seemed to get one once a week) all the hockey talking heads pointed out that their head was down and you need to keep your head up on the ice. Further that when player X (Wendel Clark, Scott Stevens, whoever) you needed to be particularly aware. Still true.

Yeah, hockey people are not the brightest of folks.

Probably a reason for that, but can't seem to concentrate enough to

Here's Gainey's quote (great work Mo):
Stars coach and GM Bob Gainey even blamed it on Modano, saying: “I didn’t think it was a dirty hit. He got his shoulder right on the jaw. I don’t know if it was so much a hit as Mike turned and skated right into him.”

Hope the Leafs enjoyed their big win last Wednesday. Followed it up by getting pasted 6-2 by the Sabres and are down 8-0 to the Preds with 10 minutes left.

In a related story, Filip Forsberg is lighting it up for Nashville. What a heist, hope the Caps enjoyed the Martin Erat era.

Cam Talbot has been stellar for the Rags tonight, they just finished holding on for a 2-0 win at home.

Flyers' already brutal blue line takes another hit as Del Zotto left in the early 3rd and did not return.

And no stupid penalties, either. He is, however, 9-5-14 on the year. I can't place it, but there's something drastically less distasteful about him this year.

He's playing for a coach that demands accountability and structure, the exact opposite of the chode who coached the Pens.

The Flyers inducted 2/3 of the Legion of Doom into their HoF tonight.

You know, at least their GM gives a shit that they stink.

Effort was much better tonight, I guess they got the message. Of course they still lost.

Sure, but so were 19 other guys who didn't run a round endangering people. Okay, I'm overstating it a bit, but if there was a category for douchebaggery, his career body of work to date puts him among the active leaders.

Anywho, even as a documented hater of the Penguins, I have to admit that I miss Byslma, partly for the reason you mentioned.

Because of a McDonald TO and blown coverage. Maddening. Laughton looked great.

The ceremony was still kind of awkward. Renberg had fun with it. I kept waiting for Snider to run out from a crowd and tackle Eric. They should have had Neil Young emcee the show. Anyway, I really miss watching that guy. Every night was an event.

You know, at least their GM gives a shit that they stink. If the forwards and Mason/Emery never talked to the defense again, you could hardly blame them. The only silver lining is that the farm system is stacked at defense. Maybe Hexy should have called Homer down before his tirade so he could have thanked him for setting the table by drastically overpaying McDonald and shipping JVR away for Schenn.

Laughton did look very good in both games. Just cementing my already cemented belief that the Vinny Lecavalier signing was galactically stupid considering they had Giroux/Schenn/Couturier/Laughton on the C depth chart already.

As for the D...it's not that they're necessarily terrible, but they've got a bunch of guys who are "just a guy" type players making way more than they should. I look at guys like Del Zotto and Schultz, those guys aren't demonstrably worse than MacDonald/Grossmann. The Flyers have so much dead weight on their cap, they need about 4 more amnesty buyouts to fix it. Or some lousy GMs to save them. Too bad the Dodgers aren't a hockey team. O wait, who was the GM in Montreal who traded for Gomez?

MoGater - I can't think of what I could add to your last post other than to note that I nodded the entire time I read it. Extremely mediocre. If the Gostisbehere/Morin/Hagg/Sanheim group fails to yield at least one bona fide top-pairing guy I'm jumping off the Walt Whitman. I think that's a modest request (it should yield more good NHL defensemen).

Only LEAD DEBLOWER.
Tonight, DeBoer pairs Marek Zidlicky and Peter Harrold on the blue line, a recipe for disaster.  Sure enough, the Devils down 2-0 late and BOTH goals on Zidlicky and Harrold.  Zidlicky not only gives the puck away on the blue line for a breakaway but after Schneider makes the save Zidlicky kicks it into the net.  Is DeBoer THIS stupid?

Seguin with 2 more goals, leading the league now. Shooting 20% but leading the league in shots as well. If his shooting percentage regresses to his career level of 12%, he will get to about 45 goals.

Uh...just sayin'.

Sorry for posting some NHL news. The correct answer was probably just to move on, but it's all good.

Could've left out the "Just sayin" snark. If you had done that, then yes, you would have just been posting some NHL news (with nice little analysis re: SH %).

This. And I'm actually confident that they'll get something out of that group (though Gostisbehere blowing out his knee obviously hurts). The problem they have is they haven't even been able to develop middle or bottom pairing guys, let alone stud #1 D-men. I hope Hextall does better than Homer did, but I worry that the trading away of young players and picks didn't come from Ed Snider rather than Holmgren.

On the other hand I'm digging the new and improved Jake Voracek. I don't ever remember him using his strength and driving through guys like this before, he's been fun to watch.

I haven't watched much of the Flyers or Rangers this year. I see Matt Hunwick is alive and in the Rangers lineup. Who knew!

Gotta love Emelin. Gets dinged $11k for a hit to the head of his former captain, then proceeds to be a big tough guy and get in Gionta's face in his first couple shifts on the second half of the home and home tonight.

Pigs will fly before he drops the gloves and doesn't get spanked. Emelin fight card for those so inclined

At least he stands up for his team, not like the assasin of Dalton Prout the coward Milan Lucic.

How it the world do you guys tolerate Hack Edwards? He's terrible.

Edit: Jack. Typo due to thick fingers, but it's appropriate. I was listening to his commentary after the Prout-Lucic incident. His indignation at Prout receiving only a minor for roughing sounds like my toddler pouting. Milan kind of got what he deserved.

Edwards can get on my nerves from time to time, but go listen to other teams local announcers and tell me he is worse. His saving grace in my opinion is that he actually loves the game and will get excited if the other team does something great.

What would you prefer? Local announcers are always going to have some bias, go listen to a Penguins game and get back to me.
Also Prout punched him without his gloves on, that should have been more than a minor for roughing, not that it matters.

Between here and everywhere.
Yea, you can have whatever opinion you want on Edwards (I love him), but Prout deserved a fighting major there. He dropped the gloves and threw a punch. There's not much grey area there.

Jack Edwards is a complete homer, but he's OUR complete homer.  Other PbP guys might tamper their enthusiasm and sound boring, others go way over the top (even more so than Jack).  Yes, Jack is just as much a B's fan as he is an announcer, but that's why I like him.

I like Jack. Him and Brick aren't Fred and Derek but they're not Arnold and Kluzak either. Jack, despite his reputation as being a homer gets very excited when the other team makes a play as well. That excitement for both teams makes it very easy to know when something important is happening on the ice if you're forced to do something else and have the game on in the background and is a good alert to focus on the TV. That excitement for the game of hockey itself instead of just the team signing his checks I feel is infectious and doesn't necessarily come through from a lot of other announcers. And I think if you ignore the excitement and focus on just the nuts and bolts of how he calls the game he's outstanding. Describing the action as it's happening, getting names right and setting up his color analyst to make good points about what is happening on the ice are all things I feel he does at a very high level.
