As for the challenge ahead, Montreal's current situation reminds me a little bit of when Yzerman took over the Red Wings. Not quite as bad, but they've got a lot of long term money on the books to middle of the roster players. The Habs are younger, have a good farm system and some picks stock piled, but he's got some digging out to do.

I also think Gorton is pretty overated. He had a lot of things fall into his lap in NYR. The tear down was good, but that's the easy part. I'm not sure how much credit he deserves for the rebuiild part. He won two lotteries. Fox orchestrated his way out of two organizations and to NYR because that's the only team he wanted to play for. Panarin also made it clear he wanted to play in New York. So he had a Hart calibur forward and Norris calibur defenseman fall into his lap. Sprinkle in some ping pong ball luck at the draft, and here he is.
