I'm posting this warning here from CR in the Hernandez Covid thread.
A quick warning for all that any conversation/speculation about athletes regarding vaccination status needs to happen in the V&N thread created for that purpose. Discussion of roster implications, etc. is fine, but beyond that, there is no wiggle room on this policy.

Is this the right place just to ask if they were/are vaccinated? Not to politicize it but just to know.
And any word on how they're all feeling...

This works out even better than designating him for assignment. His roster spot can be replaced without any moves on the 40 man.

Would assume Valdez since Rios is injured but this seems like an opportunity to bring in someone not on the 40-man who could provide a different look. Ort, Feldman, or John Schreiber would each be interesting.

Feltman threw 41 pitches yesterday. So he's probably out for at least two days.

I would want Ort because you can match him up. He's got a huge righty/lefty split. His WHIP is .98 vs righties, 2.12 vs. lefties. You can fill in the blanks on the rest of the numbers because yes, they are that lopsided.

Schreiber could be a good length guy.

Would love to see what Ort can do.

I’m prepared for the entire team to test positive by weeks end. This is depressing.

They're going to be hard pressed to get someone from upstate NY (WooSox on an off-day between Buffalo and Rochester) or Manchester (Sea Dogs are off and headed there) to St. Pete in time for tonight's game.

Per PeteAbe, Espinal, Valdez and Schreiber are on the taxi squad and with the team. Espinal seems a logical pick to start tomorrow's game since the starter is currently TBD and Cora was talking about it being a bullpen game.

I didn’t realize how bad Ort’s #s are against lefties. Makes him difficult to use with the 3-batter minimum, esp against a team with a ton of lefties like the Rays.

why is the starter TBD? There’s no doubleheaders scheduled. The pen is clearly cooked.

Because they're trying to keep everyone on a six-man rotation schedule with just 5 starters. Cora said yesterday that they hoped to have a bullpen game but availability would dictate. He also said this would be the last turn through where they would be committed to five days off between starts. After this, it's a 5-man rotation and if there's an off-day, great. Otherwise, everyone gets just 4 days off.

Incidentally, the Rays starter is also TBD for tomorrow.

? Barnes hasn't tested positive, has he?
Passan's only said he's going on the IL. No word yet about tests. Probably a close contact with Perez, but that's where Arroyo started too.

This outbreak might make all the trade deadline hysteria moot. Symptoms or not, a positive test is a minimum 10 days off. If they lose anybody else at this point (and it seems inevitable they will), the roster might be too depleted to hang on. Especially considering 10 of the next 13 are against first place teams (Rays and White Sox). The timing here couldn't be much worse.

How many guys did the yankees have out with Covid for the first game after All-Star game to be postponed? With four guys already testing positive, not to mention the strength coach, if one more guys tests positive I'm kind of expecting some postponements.

I wouldnt be stunned if Peacock starts tomorrow instead of Espinal. The difficult part is how many more guys are going to get sidelined with this?

If it keeps coming in dribs and drabs, they can field a team with call-ups and taxi squad guys. I don't expect any postponements. With the Yankees, it was only that first game and I imagine it had a lot to do with guys coming back from the break and being tested too close to the start of that game to replace them. Seems less likely to happen now.

They have dozens of minor-leaguers, so I'm not sure why there would be any postponements. I'm not sure the results v. the Rays will be appreciably different with or without the guys who are out.

I knew we should have traded our top 3 prospects for Jake Peavy at the deadline. . . . .

On a serious note, this is going to be a very difficult stretch, the bats need to step up, and let’s hope it turns into a rallying effort for the team. . .

Yes, it's such a bummer. Obviously everyone's health the top consideration. But the team at full strength is still a very good team. If they could get Hernandez back to CF, Arroyo to second, the defense improves and the line up is long. Add Sale and Houck. That team makes it to the post season. Now ... not so sure.

Hopefully the words "not very ill or not ill at all" can be placed next to all those guys. Otherwise, waiting 10 days for them to come back is irrelevant.

Brutal stretch to be this short-handed. Pitching staff will be strained to it's limits, and I just don't have confidence that this lineup can carry them against even just decent pitching. If in a couple of weeks they're even within 1-3 games of the last WC, I'd honestly consider that a win.

At this point, with all of these Covid positives, I'm starting to think that tanking the rest of the season for a better draft position might be worth it

No way in hell.

They just got Sale back, they aren't going to suddenly shut it down.
They've also already won 75 games. They couldn't tank enough to get a particularly high pick at this point.

You might want to add strength and conditioning coach Kiyoshi Momose. I believe he may have been among the first wave of personnel to have been identified. I find him and Raymond Vazquez to be of concerning interest. I'm not sure what defines close contact, but I would imagine as coaches they spend a fair amount of one on one time with many of the players.

Done. We'll learn the particulars one day, but in the meantime, this outbreak could effectively end their season. 3-7 over the next 10 will probably do it.

Brad Peacock has been pitching in AAA for Cleveland the past couple of months with an ERA hovering around 9.00 and getting knocked out by the 3rd or 4th inning start after start. I couldn't figure out what they were seeing to keep him around. That's some serious desperation.

Xander pulled from the game on the way out to play defense - seems like a covid situation.

Xander confirmed positive. It would be shocking if Devers weren't next with how close those two are.
