It’s against Cashman’s instincts but they really should trade a reliever or two, to free up 40 man space and to let other guys step up. They are at 40 currently, and will need spots for Marwin, almost certainly a 3rd catcher (a lot of teams have 4 on the 40 man, NY has just 2), and maybe Manny Banuelos as a 10th reliever, who has really impressed so far this spring, up to 94 and still just 31 years old, 3 scoreless against TOR's A lineup today.

I would definitely trade Rodriguez and probably Green too (final year of his deal), if they believe in Banuelos he steps in to one of those spots and there are plenty of options waiting in the minors. Yoendrys Gomez is out for most/all of the year recovering from Tommy John but putting him on the 60 day IL to clear a 40 man spot may start his clock, not sure how that works. I'm not sure how they can afford to let him keep clogging one all year though, he is a top prospect but he is a couple years away from MLB even once he recovers. I expected him to be traded by now, maybe that will happen if he can't be put on the 60 day IL.

Cashman has drastically overhauled the position player half of the team in the past year, 7 of 13 position players there were added in the past 12 months.

Interesting, Castro profiles very similarly to Clay Holmes before NY traded for him last summer. The Yankees had too many lefties in the pen and Joely got killed by righties last year (.826 OPS), so I think a nice exchange for the Yankees. I didn’t understand why they resigned Joely to begin with, he is a great LOOGY though.

I think this could be a precursor to something I have talked about all winter, trading the final year of Chad Green's deal, with Castro as a preemptive replacement.

With the short spring training, teams have been playing their regular lineups a lot more, trying to get the guys who will actually play ABs, and we can see the NY plan to start the season coming into focus. This one is from yesterday:

  1. Josh Donaldson (R) 3B
  2. Aaron Judge (R) RF
  3. Anthony Rizzo (L) 1B
  4. Giancarlo Stanton (R) DH
  5. DJ LeMahieu (R) 2B
  6. Joey Gallo (L) LF
  7. Aaron Hicks (S) CF
  8. Marwin Gonzalez (S) SS
  9. Kyle Higashioka (R) C
DJ and Marwin will both make the team and play a lot (until Marwin stops hitting, Cabrera and Peraza will both be gunning hard for that roster spot from AAA), but I think the starters at 2B and SS are still Gleyber and IKF. Hicks also should sit some in favor of Judge in CF, Stanton in RF, DJ/Donaldson at some combo of DH and 3B. I would sit Hicks Opening Day against Eovaldi as he is 3-16 career against and go with this for game 1:

Donaldson 3B
Judge CF
Rizzo 1B
Stanton RF
LeMahieu DH
Gallo LF
Gleyber 2B
Higgy C
IKF SS

The top four or five there seem set on days DJ is in there, Boone said he liked him in the 5 spot the other day specifically., There is zero chance that order was Boone's idea, maybe why I like it, get their two best hitters up first with no obvious leadoff guy. My recent lineup suggestion had Rizzo and Donaldson flipped at 1/3 before/between Judge and Stanton but this might be better.

I don't have a subscription so I couldn't read much of this before the paywall hit, but this is interesting:

Why the Yankees pitching staff is embracing a new slider and how the 'whirly' is different from a traditional slider
"The whirly uses a new theory known as seam-shifted wake to use air flow and spin to create horizontal movement."

Seems like JP Sears and Clarke Schmidt made the team, Banuelos to AAA which saves them having to open a 40 man spot for him for now.

NY seems to be going with a somewhat crazy 16 pitchers and just 12 position players to start the season, which presumably means Locastro to AAA (he does have one option left). I don't think they've announced Marinaccio over Locastro yet, but this seems to be the team.

I would still like to trade a reliever who is out of options (Green?) and add Locastro, Wade helped them so much pinch-running late last season and Locastro can fill that role just as well.

The Joely Rodriguez transaction list in the last eight months is funny:

7/29/21: NY and TEX agree on a trade, four prospects for Joey Gallo and then at the last minute they add Everson Pereira and Randy Vazquez for reliever John King, so 6 for 2.

Then King failed his physical, TEX included Joely instead, NY withdrew the two prospects and it ended up as a 4 for 2 deal, with Joely yielding no return even though TEX paid his remaining salary.

11/7/21: NY declines their $3M team option on Joely, opting to give him a $500K buyout instead.

11/10/21: NY agrees with Joely on a 1 year/$2M deal, he will be a FA after the season and gets a $500K bonus if traded.

4/3/22: He Is traded, to the Mets, who agree to pay his trade bonus and so hilariously he ends up with exactly the $3M after all.

I did not get why the Yankees brought him back, he is a (very good) LOOGY in a three batter minimum era but they got a year of Miguel Castro back for him, good job Brian.

Another interesting one is Nick Rumbelow, a 7th round pick in 2013 by NY who was absolutely dominant in relief in AA/AAA in 2017. He was already 26 though and Cashman traded him before the rule 5, to SEA for two very young pitchers, Juan Then and JP Sears. Juan T later went back to SEA in exchange for half a season of Edwin Encarnacion and Sears made the Yankees today, at 26. Rumbelow looks like he’s been out of baseball since 2019, good job Brian.

Is Green really the guy you want to trade? He's projected to be your third best reliever this year after Chapman and Loaisiga.

Yes, I don't believe those projections, he is in the final year of his deal and I think likely has good value as some teams would slot him in as their closer. I think NY could easily replace him internally, I wouldn't be surprised if both Holmes and Castro outperform him this year.

It's worth looking at the roster turnover from 1 year ago until now, Opening Day to Opening Day.

In: Jose Trevino, Anthony Rizzo, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Josh Donaldson, Marwin Gonzalez, Joey Gallo

Out: Gary Sanchez, Jay Bruce (!), Gio Urshela, Clint Frazier, Brett Gardner, Mike Tauchman, Tyler Wade

In: Luis Severino (IL last year), Nestor Cortes (minors at this time last year), Clay Holmes, Miguel Castro, Wandy Peralta, 1 of Sears/Schmidt/Marinaccio (28 man roster compared to 26 last year)

Out: Corey Kluber, Domingo German (IL), Darren O'Day, Luis Cessa, Nick Nelson

So 12 new players out of the 26, 9 external, 3 internal promotions (all pitchers).

What do folks think of Glyber's prospects this year? Move to second, a bit more maturity, could portend a strong year for him.

Ben Rortvedt is finally playing actual games this season. He is the catcher they got from MIN who everyone thought would make the team out of spring training along with Higgy, but he had an oblique strain and NY traded for Trevino.

Today he was activated for rehab games and is playing in low A, he just homered in his second AB (3-4 levels below where he should be playing, but still).

The Yankees are going to have a tough decision to make. I want Trevino on this team.

Trevino isn’t going anywhere, Higgy is the one more in danger. All of them are good at framing and if any started hitting, it would put pressure on the other two. Higgy has no options left and control through 2024, Trevino can be optioned and is controlled through 2025, Rortvedt can be optioned and is controlled at least until 2026.

I still think Sean Murphy is maybe the best fit for NY as a trade target (at any position), controlled through 2025 but with two stud prospects coming up fast behind him and about to get expensive. NY could send back Higgy (California boy) plus a nice prospect package.

But they are going to have to make a decision in the next few days and they aren’t going to keep 3 catchers.

Why are they going to have to make a decision? Rortvedt is going to AAA when his rehab assignment is done.

Gotcha. Yeah, originally the plan was for Higgy and Rortvedt to share the duties but it seems like Trevino has stolen the spot. So he will just head to the minors now.

OK, here is a small prediction:

Clarke Schmidt should get an extended 2-3 inning outing soon, in the next game or two (that is not the prediction). Today he will be on 4 days rest after 2.2 innings/35 pitches in Chicago on the 14th.

After that outing, I think NY sends Schmidt down (they need to go to 13 pitchers at the end of the month anyway and Schmidt will be burnt until at least the 23rd or 24th) and brings up Estevan Florial, and gives him at least a few games in CF. Florial is still 24 (about two months older than Adley Rutschman) and has been hot this month in AAA, a .913 OPS and homers in two of the last three games, today's was off fast rising stud Sox prospect Brayan Bello.

Hicks looks cooked, Gallo still has All-Star upside but looks drunk and/or hungover much of the time and generally just as bad as Hicks, and for both I mean in the field also. Give the kid some games and see what he can do, he has always looked like he belonged in his very brief previous stints (.880 career OPS in 30 PAs and solid defense in CF).

NY taking a bit of a chance dropping Brantly from the 40 man, I think that makes Freitas their third string catcher if someone claims him, until Rortvedt is back.

I saw a report last night that mentioned the ankle instead of the calf and thought it was a mistake. Glad it wasn't, I think.

Since it doesn't mention a turned ankle, I guess I can still worry about his achilles tendon being weak or compromised. :(

Not a new roster move, but I wanted to note that the JP Sears set of transactions is one of Cashman's better ones, every November (in normal seasons) he deals some of the guys he doesn't have room to protect in the rule 5 but who have a good chance of being taken. The acquiring team doesn't have to keep them on the 26 man roster all season and doesn't have to offer them back, much better for their development, so that's why they make a pre rule 5 move.

One of these was Nick Rumbelow, a 7th round pick in 2013 by NY who was absolutely dominant in relief in AA/AAA in 2017. He was already 26 though and Cashman traded him before the rule 5, to SEA for two very young pitchers, Juan Then and JP Sears. Juan T later went back to SEA in exchange for half a season of Edwin Encarnacion and Sears we have all seen now. Rumbelow looks like he’s been out of baseball since 2019, good job Brian.

Yankees just signed Matt Carpenter to a major league deal. Not sure why or whose spot he is taking.
They have two roster spots open after sending down Sears and Florial yesterday but that doesn't make this move any less confusing, 36 years old and hasn't hit since 2018.

From Fangraphs this March (when he was in the TEX organization, they released him a few days ago):

"Matt Carpenter: Carpenter is 36, he’s a liability in the field, he’s moving to a pitcher’s park, and he hasn’t had a good season since 2018. However, the stats say emphatically that he was unfortunate—not just the ones we’ve been looking at, but also Statcast’s, which put him in the top quartile in xwOBA and Barrel Percentage. And we keep reading how he’s spent the winter holding seances with Joey Votto and visiting soothsayers—something like that—in his tireless efforts at a top-down refurbishment of his swing."

I guess we have to trust the analytics team on this one. Low risk move I guess.

Carpenter with huge L/R splits in AAA this year (he is a lefty hitter), 1.180 OPS against RHP (59 ABs), .451 against LHP (21 ABs).

I don't watch much MLBN but I happened to see Chris Young on there this afternoon talking about this and he was like "It's real! I was inspired when I played there, like every game is a Friday night game!", although he was 30 then and Carpenter is 36 now.

The one it makes me think of is NY trying a 34 year old Lance Berkman briefly in 2010, which didn't work out well but then he had a top 10 MVP season at 35 the next season in STL.

NY brought back prodigal son Shane Greene on a minor league deal, first appearance tonight in AAA, 2 0 0 0 1 5 on 31 pitches. Scranton now has two relievers named Greene (Zach), let's see how long until whoever's doing the box scores figures out to add initials.

And what a gem by Taillon.

I wonder if NY could get someone to take Hicks ($36M remaining through 2025, $10M per year) if they packaged him along with a few pitchers, NY has a lot to spare. It is sad but Locastro for one is decidedly better and a great late-game bench option. Also NY should try to get Ian Happ ASAP for prospects, under control through 2023. Then maybe they could move the remainder of Joey Gallo's last season to the Padres, Preller is a fan and it shouldn't take much.

C: Trevino
1B: Rizzo
2B; Gleyber
SS: IKF (possibly Peraza if he blows up)
3B: Donaldson
LF: Happ
CF: Judge
RF: Stanton
DH: Carpenter

bench: LeMahieu, Higgy, Marwin, Locastro

Hicks has been showing signs of waking up. I'm really curious what they do with Gallo. At this point, I'd rather see Florial getting those at bats. Or a healthy Stanton in the field and Andujar at DH.
