OK, Weissert and Krook both pitched in AAA tonight, so I’m guessing that the Franchy and Brewer moves were both for more AAA depth, getting some healthy guys at the back of the 40 man. I think Franchy goes down for Ian Hamilton before the next game, then Cashman doesn’t have to DFA anyone yet.

Hmm, didn’t realize Florial had fallen that far off track. BA #38 prospect in 2018.

Sorry if you’ve written on it elsewhere but did you anticipate this as an option?

He’s out of options, it’s a bit similar to Pache. He hit very well in AAA last year but they’ve never really given him a chance at the major league level, and when they have, he has looked bad at the plate. I don’t get Franchy over him but that spot will be bumped by Bader soon anyway, and I think Franchy can be optioned on his new deal. NY should get something back for him in the DFA process.

NY sends down Brito which is minimum 15 days for a pitcher but they need a 5th starter again on 4/12, so no idea the plan for that game. This is presumably Ian Hamilton’s spot for now, though, his opt-out is in two days.

Hicks complained about playing time after yesterday's game and gets the start on Monday, shouts to the squeaky wheel getting the grease.

I know Bader's return will solve things somewhat but there's zero chance that Cabrera/Hicks/Franchy will be the season-long plan in LF or as the backup OF options, and I'd be surprised if that trio is still intact by the end of April.

Yeah, there's a lot of deadwood in terms of position players that needs to go, some kids waiting patiently behind them.

With the 13 pitcher maximum rule, it gets complicated. They can use the spot to get Brito back up (without someone going on the IL, he couldn't come back until the 17th), but they need to send Hamilton down (one option left) and bring up a position player.

So I guess my guess is:

Donaldson to the 10 day IL
Rortvedt to the 60 day IL (to create a 40 man spot)
Hamilton to AAA
Brito back up
Bauers promoted (he has a 1.375 OPS in AAA currently, 3 HRs in 19 ABs)

Peraza not in the AAA lineup today, so now I’m guessing Brito for Donaldson and Peraza for Hamilton.

The one (non-) move I didn't understand from Cashman this winter was not bringing Matt Carpenter back but he is 37 and eventually signed for 2/12 with the bottomless pockets Pads, Franchy is 28 and signed for $1M.
I bet if Carpenter could play the OF a little better, he would have been the guy. I wish him well in sunny San Diego. I don't really expect Franchy to keep it up like Carpenter did until his injury, but it sure is fun to watch.

Hicks and IKF a combined 5-44 with no extra base hits.
Gotta be a tough position to be one of those guys. No assigned role or position, still getting warmed up and used to pitching, most likely to be cut or traded...Not a recipe to flourish. Still, says a lot if they can't hit more than 100.

Bauers isn't definitely being activated, it is pending Judge's MRI, although he should have been on the team all road trip as he's been demolishing AAA and the NY roster has plenty of dead weight.

NY brought up Jake Bauers, sent Franchy to AAA (they can do this because of the split contract he signed with them), and moved Lou Trivino to the 60 day IL.

Also you can add their two FA pitcher signings, Rodon and Kahnle, 0 games in 2023 for both so far.

A small thing but Carlos Narvaez (Omar's cousin, 24 year old catcher) got promoted to AAA today. He was in high A last year, worked a lot with the big league staff in spring training this year, was assigned to AA and had a .801 OPS in his brief time there. Rortvedt is probably still the third string catcher since he is on the 40 man. but Narvaez is pushing him for that spot.

I'd rather have him do that in the majors and piggyback someone else with him. Can't watch Brito anymore.

Yep, agreed, Brito only got to 77 pitches today, Severino’s next start should be for NY and Brito should go down.

He was hurt for all of April, just back recently. He has 3 HRs in 37 ABs in AAA, 1.027 OPS.

Tommy Kahnle with his first action of the year, an inning in low A to start his rehab. He is on the 60 day IL and should be ready once he is eligible to return on May 29.

That's interesting, especially because Hicks appears to be attempting to rise from the dead recently.
I think Allen has to be on the roster, he would definitely be an upgrade on Willie Calhoun who can realistically only DH.

Another OF is good, but I was hoping Peraza would come up for Calhoun, no matter how unlikely it was.

They do need Peraza on the roster, but it's hard to see how that can happen without Gleyber being moved. Even if he came up, he wouldn't probably play much again.

Greg Allen played very well for NY as everyone remembers, a .849 OPS in 2021. What I didn't remember is that it was only 48 PAs, but he sure seemed to make a lot of big plays in that time.

So I checked his career splits by stadium, figuring he'd have good numbers at Yankee Stadium and that might be part of the reason why NY made this move. He does have a .822 career OPS there (46 PAs), but pretty fascinating where he has hit the best, these are his top three sorted by OPS.

Tropicana Field (TB): 1.039 OPS (18 PAs)
Fenway Park (BOS): 1.005 OPS (43 PAs)
Rogers Center (TOR): 1.000 (24 PAs)

And a .873 OPS in Camden Yards, although just 9 PAs.

All of those are pretty small sample size, but interesting nonetheless IMO. Overall Allen has just a .635 career OPS in 800 PAs, even with all those great AL East numbers.
