Tauchman with a single and a double off Cole in the first three innings today, everyone else seems to be striking out (edit: 7 Ks in 3 innings).

Gerrit Cole is the best SP NY has had in a long time. CC was great at his peak but I think peak CC was not as good as current Cole, I think you have to go back to peak Guidry in the late seventies to find a SP for NY as good as current Cole.

Today Cole threw 84 pitches, 5.2 4 0 0 1 9. He'll get one more outing before opening against the Nats, looks like he'll be pretty well stretched out.

I liked reading the CC to Cole comparison. I really love the new ace. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

bWAR has it close:

CC: 6.2, 4.8, 6.4 in his first three seasons for NY (6.3 and 6.8 the two years before coming to NY)
Cole: 5.7, 6.6 in the two seasons since HOU and Verlander helped him more ideally harness his incredible repertoire.

When CC came to NY, he was coming off that ridiculous home stretch for the Brewers where he kept going on three days rest and got them into the playoffs, he had 251 Ks in 253 innings and a 2.70 ERA.

Cole threw 249 innings including the playoffs last year and had a 2.50 ERA and a ridiculous 373 Ks, the single best K/9 season in history at 13.8, breaking Randy Johnson's 2001 record.

I need to start a Cole thread.

Boston, MA
I can’t think of a good recent comparison for a player transaction shifting the balance of power in a league like Cole going from Houston to New York. Maybe Randy Johnson going to Arizona. Mookie to LA. The best pitcher in baseball leaving the defending AL champions is a seismic shift.

Judge is back today, he and Stanton both homer off Paxton in the first.

Also Loaisiga pitched three perfect innings and is out, 3 0 0 0 0 4.

Not to downplay the importance of Judge and Stanton's bombs, but Paxton was doodoo.
He struggled in the first inning like he did all last year but after that he didn't give up anything, 4 2 2 2 2 5. Boone announced he will start game 2 of the season after Cole.

I have today's Yankee vs. Yankee game on in the background, and I just saw example #22337457 why I would prefer to never see Andujar at 3B again for the Yankees.

Judge on first, Sanchez hits a two-hopper right to Miggy, couldn't be an easier DP especially given that Sanchez is presumably not going to run his hardest. Of course Miggy takes way too long to get it to second and the play at first isn't even close, Sanchez easily beats it out. I'm fine with him at DH, I think I'm fine with him in LF sometimes (although Tauchman's defensive numbers last year were so good that he put up a 3.8 bWAR in just 296 PAs), I'm open to him maybe playing 1B occasionally or at least trying it, but he is never going to not be a horrendous defensive 3B, there are just too many things to fix. Let Estrada or Wade (or Duffy if he makes the team) back up Gio, the defensive hit just isn't worth it and it impacts how the pitchers pitch too. They're not dumb, they know what a tire fire he is over there, it's got to be really hard on lefties especially.

Lot of HRs in today's game, Gio, Estrada with his third, not sure who those were off but Ford and Andujar put back to back pitches from Cole into the bullpen in right center, quite impressive. As with many of the truly dominant pitchers, the 'game plan' against Cole seems to often be 'swing at the first pitch' which can work on occasion but also can lead to really low pitch counts and deeper outings.

Good to see NY's hitters catching up, Judge also seems to be on base constantly, his own team is as afraid to throw him strikes as everyone else.

Also for the second straight game, the two solo HRs were pretty much all Cole allowed, 5.2 4 2 2 0 7 on 87 pitches.

Gio Urshela maybe got hurt warming up for tonight’s Mets game, because of course.
