If they actually bring kids up to help, then not making moves is fine.

If they keep bringing up Shane Greene and Ryan Weber, well, that's stupid.
Those are intentional 1-2 day moves with guys they can DFA right after and they don't care if they are claimed (sorry Ryan and Shane). These other guys are real prospects who they are still building up, but when you see how guys like Sears and Marinaccio have delivered, maybe they need to be giving more of their own guys a shot instead of looking for external answers, assuming those external answers are as pricy as they seem to be.

To be honest, I'm completely at ease about the pitching situation, no matter what Cashman, Boone and the staff do.

I think enough talent is already in the organization and while the best configuration is still a puzzle that needs to be figured out, I'm confident they will.

When I see guys like Marrinacio step up, my confidence grows.

Unless it is for a guy like Soto, keeping the best position player prospects is fine by me. Feed Matt Blake some more college pitchers and watch him work.

Edit: So, uh, yeah. What Abbey said more succintly

I think they will get a reliever who is under control past this year, I don't think they necessarily need a reliever. Cashman was ripped all winter by people thinking he was not being aggressive enough when really it was that those people did not know what Cashman had.

Guys. We need, yes need, a second starter. Cole is not a shutdown ace and after Cole we don’t know what to expect from Jaime and Hyde, Cortes, and Monty. Severino is a complete wild card.

Cole and Cortes and Severino are fine, Severino and Stanton seem to be essentially resting now with the big division lead. Yes, adding a #2 guy would be great but that doesn’t mean getting one at any price.

10:57AM: The Rays may not be too deep in the Gallo hunt, as Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News hears that the “Yankees wanted too much back” in return.

7:56AM: Joey Gallo’s time in the Bronx is widely expected to be up by Tuesday’s trade deadline, and the Yankees have been exploring trade possibilities for the struggling outfielder. The Brewers, Padres, and Rays are among the clubs who have shown interest in the former All-Star, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale writes.

The Rays already traded for Peralta, I'm sure NY asked for more from them for Gallo than they are asking from NL teams.

45 hours left, I really think with how NY is positioned, Cashman is right to not give up too much for most of the players rumored to be available. I would try really hard to keep Peraza out of a Montas deal, and if he is in there, I would try very hard to get Murphy included also (especially if NY sends them back yet another catcher as rumored in Breaux, how many catchers does one organization need?).

But Rodon is the guy I would go hard after even though he is a rental, I begged Cashman to go after him all winter (although if NY had signed Verlander or Rodon, Cortes would presumably have been out of the rotation). So a three player offer for a Rodon rental:

1) 21 year old CF Everson Pereira (#69 on Kiley McDaniel's list in March) who has 30 HRs and 28 SBs in 513 ABs since the start of 2021, recently promoted to AA.

2) Domingo German as someone SF could immediately slot in and who is controlled through 2024, and who could use a fresh start somewhere else.

3) And a pitching prospect, maybe let them take their pick of Wesneski or Medina or Will Warren.

Down to 34 hours, I want to coin the term ‘veteran hugging’ which is when a contending team simply won’t give their own kids a chance despite all evidence making it seem that they’re ready.

If NY can’t get a SP upgrade at a non-absurd price, one way to upgrade the entire pitching staff is to upgrade the defense and NY has an obvious way to do that with Peraza over IKF. Hopefully we’ll see that this week if Peraza is not dealt.

Given the pace of the market and lack of significant movement outside of Castillo, makes me think sellers are shooting for the stars and buyers aren’t biting on mega prospect packages. Either that or Ohtani and Soto are both available and nobody wants to make moves until those situations are resolved.

Kind of nervous to see what they gave up, Effross has so much team control still.

That seems like a good trade for both teams, Wesneski is promising but NY has a logjam at SP and guys they like more than him in the pipeline.

This fits what I have been saying, NY needs relievers with longer-term control with Chapman, Britton, Green and Castro all FAs after the season.

It is going to deeply pain me if and when Peraza goes for Montas.

I know, right? Always amazes me.

NY needs to make a pitching move now to add Effross to the 26 man, the clear choice is German but he is scheduled to start tonight.

It really didn't occur to me that a guy like Effross would be available. Quality GB pitcher with years of control? Perfect for Yankee Stadium? Freaking awesome.

Also would much prefer Rodon over Montas, even as a rental. I think we're getting a Montas/Peraza deal, though.

Montas makes me have flashbacks to Sonny Gray.
Why is this? Genuinely curious - is it just because he's a #2-ish RHP starter on Oakland, or is it something more specific about them as players that makes them similar - and thus likely that Montas will pitch poorly in New York?

Montas does throw significantly harder, strike out more guys than Gray did at the time, and have a slightly better BB/9. Not as durable as Gray was (for a modern starter Gray was actually fairly durable), but neither is a huge standout there.

No good reason other than he is a highly touted Oakland pitcher. It seems like most starters the Yankees have acquired midseason have not panned out over the years.

Yikes, Montas has a 2.36 ERA at home this year, 5.01 on the road. Really hope we 'lose' this bidding.

That's certainly something, but last year his home/away stats were pretty identical in a larger sample size. I tend to doubt the Coliseum foul ground makes this much of a difference, there's just some "pitchers pitch better at home" and random statistical grouping in there.

It definitely sucks thinking about Sonny Gray and how this feels somewhat similar (I wonder if Beane feels the same given how Kaprielian and Mateo worked out), but you still do need to trade for #2 starters sometimes.

He's useful, but I guess I just don't see Montas as a #2 starter and I think Peraza is a #2 starter price. Hard pass.

Peraza is a way better prospect than any of the guys NY gave up for Gray.

Every year I watch as the Yankees manage to get a star at the deadline without having to give up their top prospect. If I am any team trading to NY I ask for Volpe and don't budge.

Teams will budge.

Volpe could only go in a Soto deal. Zero chance he'd be involved in anything else.
