There's hockey tonight! Hockey that matters!

Habs-Leafs at 7
Rags-Hawks at 8 (NBCSN)
Canucks-Flames at 10
Sharks-Kings at 10:30 (NBCSN)

Also there's the preview of the package so the other games are available that way.

YAY!

Toronto starts the season with player introductions, strangely beginning by naming the scratches on the bench in suits. That was awkward...

Why did the NHL scheduler start with these two teams.  They both suck.  i can't wait until the Hawks-Rangers game starts.

Honestly, I think someone's convinced themselves it's a traditional first game. It feels like these two have had one of the first games in North America for a couple of seasons.

Yeah, I don't know about season starters, but the broadcast said earlier that they have faced each other on opening night 7 years in a row.

I'm surprised at how unimpressed I am with Montreal tonight, though, outside of Subban's beautiful pass that led to the goal.

Enough with the hemming and hawing about the new boards. It's not like they just came over from Chicago Stadium.

Can someone tell me how to find the SAP button?

Toronto carrying he play against the Habs. 55% CF. Therrien burns his TO (and challenge opportunity) to settle things down early in the 3rd. Maybe this will finally be the year Price doesn't stand on his head and the the Habs lousy possession catches up with them.

Definitely an interference penalty. Need a few more angles to tell if it was suspendable. Hard to tell if he hits him with shoulder or crown of helmet from the links above.

Same shit new year. It seemed like the Leafs attempted 60 shots and otherwise dominated play. At this point I don't know if the advanced stats will ever match the on ice results for that team.

Doesn't sound like there will be anything further from SJ/LA last night. Would expect conversations with both Brown/Lucic, though.

Garrison wins it in OT in the Philly/Tampa game.

3-on-3 is madness in the best way possible - had a shot off the post, a penalty shot for Philly, and multiple breakaways. Great adjustment, and I imagine we won't see many shootouts this year.

Between here and everywhere.
Timonen played 6 of his 16 years in Philly. He didn't even Finnish his career there.

What the fuck is this shit. They're sending him off like he's played his entire career there or something.

Imagine if we did this shit for Daniel Paille? Embarrassing.

To be fair he's much more Mark Recchi than Dan Paille for them
Eh. Had he helped them with a cup I'd understand it. It still seems a bit much for a guy who played a longer % of his career with other teams.

ECF two years ago - Kreider ran Price in (I think) Game 1 and knocked him out of the series. So yeah I'd say there is a history.

That's right. Thanks for the memory jog...I knew there was something in there.

Tim Thomas pretty clearly answered that question in the SCF back in 2011.

I just love that in that play Thomas just said "Fuck it, I'm going for the check" and Boychuck had to scramble to save the puck from going in.

10 periods and counting shutout streak for Martin Jones.  First shot he faced this year went in, zero since.

I haven't wanted to put this into a more thought out post yet - but I think the Bruins are going to regret trading him. He's a stud. And I think the Bruins would have had pretty much the same season with him in net as they would with Tuukka.

I don't think so. I think they knew he was a good goaltender and they got what will likely be lottery pick and a middling prospect for him. Im not a big believer in that San Jose team despite the hot start. Despite the mob calling for Tuukka's head so far this year, he's still an exceptional goaltender and I think moving him was a nonstarter for Sweeney. So, they got good value for the asset. I'm happy with that trade. If Jones turns into a veZina candidate that's great for him but the move made a ton of sense when it happened.

Tonight's Leafstown moment: down 1 with less than 2 minutes left, Matt Hunwick fires on Marc-Andre Fleury. With 6 other Leafs on the ice. It wasn't even a borderline call.

Outside of Henrik, Price and Rask, and maybe Luongo, the order of the starting goalies changes from year to year and is mostly random, as just a few goals can change places on the leaderboards by a lot. Who would have thought Dubnyk and Mason would be 2-3 in SV% last year?

If you see 1600 shots, 16 goals will make the difference between a .930 SV% - Vezina candidate, a .920 SV% - average starter and .910 - in danger of being benched. A goal every 4 games.

All of which is a long way of saying that Jones is probably a decent starter but it's a very small sample and I wouldn't be very worried about him being one that got away.
