It says of the assistants they "have also been informed that their contracts will not be renewed."

Are all coaches typically on year-to-year deals, or is this just an accident of timing?

Full-on housecleaning.

This kind of puts Rizzo on notice s well, doesn't it?  If the new hire does not work out he will be next out the door.  Word was Williams was hired due to being a low cost alternative to a "name" guy.  With the firing of the entire staff seems to me that they are in the market for a "name" guy.

And that "name" guy is reportedly Cal Ripken Jr.

Whatever makes Harper happy. I'm only half kidding.

Though it was always pretty obvious that Williams was in way over his head, both tactically and in handling personnel.

Not to defend Williams, but apparently he only got to select one his coaches when he was hired.  The rest were incumbents or hired by the front office.  That can't have helped the communications issues that clearly went on in that clubhouse if he didn't have guys he felt he could trust.  Still in over his head regardless, but more friendly ears on staff probably would have been helpful to him.

For the Nats' sake, hopefully that's lesson learned and the new guy gets to pick his own coaches.

Because picking a guy with no managerial experience but a great playing career already worked out well?

Ripken isn't even a coach, and while his post-playing involvement has been substantial, is has been more as a minor league owner than anything. If this were a different media market, I couldn't imagine them considering him for the job.

Williams first manager to be fired year after being named manager of the year. Whatever slim chance he had of hanging on was destroyed by Paps and by a brilliant three-part behind the scenes story of the season that ran in The Washington Post last week.

Girardi has him beat, though.  He was fired the year in which he won Manager of the Year.

This has been the opinion of the Plympton91 household as well.

I almost gave him a pass for that one, but when he brought in a rookie (Aaron Barrett) instead of Clippard in the 7th inning of Game 4 of that series it really confirmed that he had no idea how to manage a bullpen.

And I refuse to believe that Rizzo is dumb enough to hire someone else with no managerial experience.

I would've thought Billy Ripken would get a shot before Cal. (they're always dropping hints on MLB Network, like they're shilling for the guy)

Hearing Cal on commentary , he couldn't even motivate Richard Simmons.

And the new guy won't be able to bring in his own coaches, according to mail just sent to season ticket holders. Among the coaching staff, batting coach Edgar Martinez and infield coach Chris Woodward have been invited to return to the big league staff. Pitching coach Rick Waits and coach Chris Prieto have been invited to return to the Mariners organization.

This says to me the next manager likely won't have a long MLB track record.

Well, doesn't that leave Bench coach, pitching coach, asst. hitting coach (if they employ one) and 3rd base coach for the new manager to choose?  Or did the mail say more?

Looks like the most popular managerial candidate is Phil Nevin.  He has already interviewed with the Nationals & Marlins and is scheduled to talk with the Padres, Mariners and D'Backs.  2nd only to Alex Cora who is on four lists.

In Boston news, the Sox say they will hire and external 1st Base Coach.

The Mariners have interviewed Jason Varitek for their manager opening, sources tell CBS Sports.
Varitek hasn't been eager to leave the Boston area, where his kids live, especially for a West Coast opportunity, so it's also uncertain he'd strongly consider the job. Varitek has not had any managerial experience since retiring in 2011.
Widely recognized as one of the smartest players in the game during his 15-year tenure as Red Sox catcher, he has been serving as a special assistant to the general manager for the Red Sox since late 2012, when then-GM Ben Cherington hired him.
Seattle let him get away once, when it traded him and Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb, an ill-fated deal for them indeed.
Tim Bogar has been considered among the favorites for the Mariners job. Alex Cora is also a candidate there.

Source: Mariners officially made offer to Jason Varitek to manage. He will not be accepting the position, and is staying with the Red Sox.

Good news to me. Tacit down the road offer to Jason he couldn't refuse?

Any chance he's a bullpen, 1st base, or 3rd base coach next year? Seems like that's the only reason to turn down a manager's gig...

He's never coached or managed before, only worked in front office since retiring from playing.

And joining him on the bench is our old friend and former third base coach for the Red Cox, the man behind the term Bogar'd, ladies and gentlemen, Tim Bogar!

There are now seven MLB managers in their current jobs without prior managing experience. Mattingly and Williams would have made it nine if they hadn't been let go.

Dusty's 66. McKeon won a WS with the Marlins at 72. Dusty seems sound the same to me as when he was managing. Why not, 66 isn't that old.

I think being a shitty manager is more the issue, as opposed to being old.

Well, they went the zero experience at all route and that blew up in their face, so obviously going for an older, experienced guy seems like the right move.

3X manager of the year. I know, that's about as believable as gold glove awards. There's a dearth of good managers. Look at the two in the ALCS.

Yeah, I dunno. I know Baker takes a ton of heat from the internet, and I understand why. But at the same time, his teams win, so he must do something well? I don't know, but I find it oddly fascinating.

I get the sense that, more than anything else, the Nats need someone who can maintain order within the ranks. Maybe that's what the appeal of Baker is at this juncture.

That could be such a smart hire for the Nats. A pitching guy, never had enough to work with in San Diego.
