According to Dunc’d on, the trade was made to gain more space under the tax so they could do something else. They went from 2 million under the tax to 7 million.
I guess we have to trust in Danny that there is a reason.

New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum has agreed on a two-year, $64 million extension that’ll take him through 2025-2026, his agent Sam Goldfeder of @Excelbasketball tells ESPN. New deal ties McCollum to Pels for four years and $133M.
Contracts in the NBA are crazy. At the deadline there were multiple talking heads that reported the Blazers couldn’t get value for CJ because of his contract, and now his new team extended him for more money.

If he wants to take 3’s off the bench and is ok with the minimum, I’m ok with him.
He's not a free agent. 10.2 mil this year, I suspect they will find a trade partner and not have to go the buyout route.

Don’t see a path to Celts getting him, and while I like him I’m not sure about the fit with Grant here. At least, while I’d certainly take Jae I don’t know that this is where you spend the very few asset and cap-space bullets in a trade

if he’e bought out…sure, I just doubt that’s how it goes. But not impossible as that salary slot is tough for a lot of contenders

The only path I see would be to trade Gallo and filler for him once Gallo becomes tradeable in mid-October. I’m not really sure why Phoenix does that unless they are stuck actually considering a buyout, but such a trade wouldn’t really limit flexibility going forward (other than the pick cost) since Jae is going to be much more tradeable than Gallo and has a salary that can match a much broader set of potential acquisitions.

I know it's a bottom-line business, but trading a free agent—one who had other options when he chose Boston—before he even played a game for the C's, due to an injury, would not be a great look, IMO.

Really hard to see why Phoenix would do that or why a Miami or Cleveland wouldn’t beat it, isn’t it?

I don't see the Celtics doing this either. Gallo could have chosen to go elsewhere and he chose the C's. It's just not a great look to trade him when the first opportunity presents itself, especially when there's a chance he could come back. Everything I read said he's set on rehabbing and trying his hardest to get back for the playoffs. I expect that the C's will honor his commitment to the team and dedication to getting back on the court.

I don’t think it’s likely, but I don’t think the relationship issue here carries a ton of weight. We’d be trading a player with an option for next year and who will miss most, if not all, of this year so I think the idea this would be looked at as unfair seems a bit strained under these circumstances. Like, if Phoenix would do this trade for a second (and us throwing in like Kornet or Ryan or whoever to make the money work), I assume we’d do it in a heartbeat. If Gallo were healthy, had committed for multiple years, or had a 2-month injury, I would agree this would be a completely unreasonable idea. But none of those are the case.

How's this for a Crowder trade...

Celtics get...
Jae Crowder
Cam Johnson
Cam Payne

Suns get...
Derrick White
Grant Williams
Sam Hauser

We have a couple TPE’s left also.

In a heart beat I'd do that. Cam Johnson would be a great addition, Crowder and Payne are good depth.
I was thinking about kicking in a Celtics 1st or higher upside 3rd guy from the Celtics (Begarin? Future 2nds?) but figured I'd just start there.

I think White is a much cleaner fit with CP3/Booker than Payne is & I was thinking they probably wouldn't want to pay Cam Johnson but may pay Grant, but that might change in the post-Sarver era. Also, not sure that they're really going to get positive value for Crowder.

I was originally going to try to reroute Payne, but even though he had a down offensive season & they'd hopefully be buying low, his defensive metrics were actually quite good, & even though he's only 6'1, his wingspan is 6'7.

Would leave Celtics with...

Small: Smart/Brogdon/Payne/PP
Middle: Jayson/Jaylen/CamJ
Bigger: Al/TL (hopefully)/Jae/MFIONDU

Idk, they played Jae 28 mpg & Cam 26 mpg last year. Other than a couple minutes of creep to flip that, I assume the reason Jae isn't expecting as many minutes is Saric is coming back.

But yeah they're not going to give up that many big wing minutes & get back only Grant.

& yeah, the new owner might actually be willing to go into the tax for Cam - with Sarver it seemed unlikely & he's an RFA after the season who I would think would get a big offer sheet.

Favors fits in the Juancho trade exception....not a huge fan, and doesn't space the floor, but imo more likely to be a useful rotation/bench big than the FAs available. Whether he's worth spending scarce cap/asset bullets right now----that I tend to doubt, but depends on how they are feeling about TL, Kornet, Kabengele Vonleh etc. Favors, at least, is an established 20 minute a game healthy NBA big which none of that group are.

I thought Chriss had turned a career corner with the 2019-20 Warriors, but he got hurt and wound up on Dallas last year after missing the prior year with an injury. If Houston traded for him to cut him, I hope the Celts consider giving him a look.

That is the most useless 8-player trade in NBA history. I love it!

I never bought that from Chriss. That team in Golden St was a train wreck and Chriss was a large part of the reason. He’s never been an NBA-level player and has possibly one of the lowest BBIQ’s I’ve seen on an NBA floor. If not for his physicals that give GM’s the hope he can grow his game into his athleticism he’d never be given so many opportunities.

Latest subject of irrational offseason exuberance from the Saitama games: Patrick Baldwin, Jr.

Last night: 17 minutes, 12 points on 4-6 fg (4-5 from 3), 6 reb, 1 ast, 1 stk, 1 blk, +23, as the Baby Dubs closed the game on a 30-5 run.

The slick skip pass to McClung at 0:58 excites me as much as the sweet shooting stroke. Warriors staff have expressed “shock” this summer at his skill level and feel for the game at 19 y.o. and 6’-9”+. Shades of MPJ?

Wow. Not a bad payday. Smart's speed-dialing his agent ...
I didn't know he wanted to be traded, I thought that was just some posters here. He'd never get that here, they wouldn't trade a player to pay him, and they aren't going to want anything to do with that tax bill
