A guy in the CFL kicked a game-winning missed FG the other day.

Yes, you read that right.
I’ve watched the replay and read the definition of the rule, and don’t understand. Can someone explain it like I’m 5? How can one return a missed kick if hitting the net makes it a dead ball?

I believe the CFL goalposts are still at the front of the endzone, so they figure if someone can kick a ball out of the end zone on a missed FG it's still worth a point. Now on short kicks fairly trivial, but can make for some interesting defensive planning in late game situations where a tied game or 1 point lead as you can't let them get into Rouge range (not just FG range)

So all you need to score is a kicker who can kick it inaccurately but far?

In very specific situations, yes. But on the whole, you'd rather have a guy that is accurate, since FGs are worth three points and a missed FG that looks like that is only worth one.
