Has my memory gotten fuzzy? I remember Wells as being kind of OK, and about what was expected at that point in his career, and not as much of a total dick as I thought he'd be. I get he gets hate for being a long time yankee, obviously, but I didn't think he was all that much of an issue here. It could be my old age playing tricks on my memory...

Dammit, Mike Lansing played two seasons here. If counting just PA he qualifies. What a miserable human being, and for that I am putting him here as well.

Edgar Renteria, Bobby Jenks, Mark Melancon, Joel Hanrahan, all the failed closers. Mike Remlinger was a colossus of suck when he was here.

Scott Sauerbeck. The way Gammons talked him up, my expectations were sky-high, and he ended up being a walk machine.

I have zero hatred for the fella (especially since the poor guy got killed in a bar), but Ivan Calderon went from all-star caliber in 1991 to absolute nothing in 1993. I was really excited when they got him.

I will also ignore the two at-bats at the end of 1977 and says Bob Bailey, 1978.

He was Zimmer's buddy, so Zim got the front office to dump Bernie Carbo to clear the way for Bailey to get more playing time. Then when injuries hit in the outfield, the Sox had to use Garry Hancock for 86 plate appearances of 33 OPS-Plus,

(Nothing personal against the late Garry Hancock).

You guys got the major ones. Some additional low-level annoying guys: Jason Johnson in '06, Craig Hansen (was he around more than one year?), Rudy Seanez.

Cesar Crespo with his OPS of .380 and OPS+ of -4 (?!) in 79 plate appearances in 2004.

Jim leyritz. Decent half season for us but always thought he was a gigantic douche.

Jay Payton never should have signed with Boston.
And right when he talked his way out of town (to the point where Tito didn't even want him on the team bus/plane) injuries hit the OF and he would have played more, perhaps every day. So he hurt the team when he came, and hurt the team by leaving.

God I will never get tired of this.
I know. +1

I am surprised no one mentioned Buckner/Stanley. Guess 2004/2007/2013 created a lot of goodwill and forgiveness.

Both were here a lot longer than one season.

Buckner had 200 hits for the Sox in 1985, and contributed with a 0.733 OPS in 1986. Stanley was quite a good, versatile pitcher for the Sox for several years in the late 70's and early 80's. He was mostly washed up by 1986.

And the opening day starter in 87, the hangover season of all hangover seasons. (Brightened ultimately by the emergence of a bunch of kids, including our namesake)

The Kyle Weiland experience wasn't very pleasant, but that was more of a by-product of him being thrown into the tire fire that was the starting rotation in September 2011.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Larry Andersen and the towels he wrapped on his arm.
This was touched on in the other thread but he actually kicked ass while he was here. The Sox won the division by only two games that year, and there was no wild card so who knows what happens without him? It's not his fault Lou Gorman hung onto Scott Cooper and traded Bagwell.

There was also the poster here that was going through all kinds of contortions to prove that Weiland was going to be one of the best pitchers in the league.

Todd Walker... just because of that guy who heckled him in Tampa. It Literally ruined the ability to listen to the game.

Throwing Nick Punto into the mix. Had he not been universally hated, he wouldn't be so beloved.

Larry Andersen for the win on my end. Gave up Bagwell for him, did nothing but bitch and complain and then left. Rick Cerone was here for 2 years so doesn't qualify.

That year Aaron Cook struck out 20 of the 411 batters he faced was really fun.

Bobby V and Gagne. V's tenure was just a complete train wreck in every way. The moment the ownership group and FO lost their MOJO, which I'm not sure they've ever fully recovered, even factoring in 2013. As for Gagne, I remember being so fired about the prospect of him and Pap locking down leads after the 7th. And then he just completely, unconditionally, sucked. Of course it all worked out ultimately in 2007, but Jesus, what an epic fail his time here was.

Dustin Hermanson was pretty useless in 2002. I think he came in as a rotation piece but got injured early. I don't even know why I remember that.
